Driving Game (Part 57)
2If you’re new to the Driving Game, you can just look back at the start of it all here in Part 1 for the full rules.
Please consider the kind folks who maintain our cheat sheet and add your post in the format of “Artist Name - Song Name” followed by a link to the song on the next line. That way they all look the same and it’s easier on the Cheat Sheet team when it’s time to update that list.
Speaking of the Cheat Sheet… The full history of our game, with links to each of the past threads, can be found on the Driving Game Cheat Sheet. Use that to avoid getting vetoed by a duplicate.
Have fun!

This thread picks up from:
Traffic - Dear Mr Fantasy
Billie Eilish- Male Fantasy
Cheat sheet UTD thru game 56!
Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy
Bread - Baby I’m-a Want You
Plutonic Lab - Sliced Bread
L.A.B. - In The Air
This is in response to the answer from @chienfou and @januarymick in Part 56 when asked about the connection to a previous reply.
@ExtraMedium eitehr we get a rules clarification or this game devolves into chaos and ceases being fun.
Eminem - Stan
@yakkoTDI
Sorry if I pushed your button with that connection. It was done light-heartedly and not intended to piss anyone off.
That being said… I’m not sure I can see the connection to the song/singer above?
@chienfou
@yakkoTDI We had a
disputediscussion about this sort of thing early on; people got frustrated with mike808 putting up very obscure connections and he was not happy that his choices were overruled; he went on to become extremely strict about anyone else stretching the rules, as I guess I did with the example below. So I think @ExtraMedium basically said if you object to it in time, just overrule it by connecting to the previous song. If a connection’s been made to the song you think doesn’t fit, then you’ve missed your chance and the game goes on. I’m sure he’ll clarify if I didn’t get that quite right!From Game 5 - my questionable entry:
@chienfou @yakkoTDI connections I see are possibly IN the air and emINem or else Chrome Music Lab.
@steeltoesenator @yakkoTDI
per the notation from Kyeh, we have moved on so no harm/no foul.
(But I am still curious)
@steeltoesenator @yakkoTDI
as mentioned in part 56, I will try to dial it back some. I am 67 and have a wide range of interests and prior careers (including a (very) short (very unsuccessful) time as a Kirby salesman…) so old 70’s drug references (like doobie and number) are in my (useless) knowledge bank, while a lot of current pop culture references fly way over my head.
TL:DR Sorry 'bout that!
@chienfou @yakkoTDI
No apolgy needed. btw, I’ve got two years on you, you’re still a youngster @chienfou!
@chienfou @steeltoesenator The connection is that the song In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins is mentioned in the lyrics of Stan.
The way I read the rules is that this is supposed to be a fun game not as research project. Keeping it simple and just connecting through an artist/band name or a song title will hopefully keep more people joining in.
Side note: I am trying to see how long I can go without checking the cheat sheet before I post a duplicate so I want to keep this going on for as long as possible.
@steeltoesenator @yakkoTDI
TIL!
@chienfou @steeltoesenator @yakkoTDI Thank you all for working this out on your own. I do feel like it’s funny that this isn’t the first time people getting creative with the rules went too far and started a minor feud. However, hope we can keep things fun without disturbing progress. Would hate to see this miss being a year-long thread at the 9-month mark. For the sake of sanity, if you make a connection that’s a real stretch, please clarify what the connection is, and if it’s vetoed, just take it as an opportunity to make another play and get more music on the list.
@chienfou @steeltoesenator
@yakkoTDI My murky connection was that George Benson appeared in the video for the Gorillaz song - so you had to actually watch the video to get it, which was very much against the original instructions. (“Pretend you’re riding in a car …”)
You should watch that video though, if you haven’t - it’s so cool!
Adam Sandler - Stan the Man
/youtube Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)
Changing up the mood!
Mel Tormé, Rob McConnell And The Boss Brass - Stars Fell On Alabama
Brass Against - Uninvited
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream
Posted this one rather than the one with the misogynistic album cover!
@chienfou Haha - yeah, the whipped cream lady!
@Kyeh
@chienfou @Kyeh Is it misogynistic cuz you’re lactose intolerant?
@ircon96 @Kyeh
Been there… done that! Some things should be left for home consumption. Besides it tends to be messy.
@chienfou @ircon96 and sticky …
@ircon96 @Kyeh
eventually.
Cream - I’m So Glad
/youtube the pretenders brass in pocket
@mossygreen
Did you skip the last one?
@chienfou @mossygreen I think she did, but I’m going to jump on the chance to put up this Pretenders song that I love! Apologies to @ExtraMedium whose song was SO appropriate!
@chienfou @ExtraMedium @Kyeh UGH, forgot to reload the page! So sorry! And I LOVE putting up weird Cream songs, too!
@chienfou @ExtraMedium @mossygreen But more Pretenders is always good too!
@chienfou @ExtraMedium @Kyeh I guess…
@chienfou @ExtraMedium @mossygreen
/youtube Pretenders - Show Me
Julie Andrews - Do-Re-Mi
This OK?
@chienfou
Me - Mi? Kinda weak …
@Kyeh
seems like I remember some homonyms in the past… Don’t have the time to look them up right now (I’m still at work)
Okay, @mossygreen - you can link a Cream song to this one …
/youtube Julie Andrews - Spoonful of Sugar
@Kyeh CAN’T DO IT NOT WEIRD ENOUGH. But thanks!
/youtube willie dixon spoonful
@mossygreen
or that works too!
@mossygreen
Same song, though, right?
@Kyeh Yes. But Willie wrote it!
@mossygreen I saw that when I checked the lyrics. Now I’m so curious to know what is weird enough.
Soundgarden - Spoonman
Beatles - Octopus’s Garden
@chienfou And there goes my best chance to post Syd Barrett, gonna have to go with an alternate title if the time comes…
@mossygreen
/giphy patience young jedi…
The Beatles - Blackbird
Joe Cocker - Bird On The Wire
@chienfou I like Leonard Cohen’s version better but I see you already posted that!
@Kyeh
they both have such iconic voices…
@chienfou And Judy Collins did a version too.
@chienfou Oh, this one is beautiful:

Do you still play your vinyl? I have a bunch of records but never play them.
@Kyeh
occasionally
Gram Parsons Emmylou Harris - Sleepless Nights
Red Snapper - The Sleepless
In Flames - Sleepless Again
Cheap Trick - The Flame
ZZ Top - Cheap Sunglasses
Dean Martin - I’m Sitting On Top Of The World
Grateful Dead - Eyes of the World
Fleetwood Mac - World Turning
The Vapors - Turning Japanese
Fun bit of info about this one (since you guys like this game for the stuff you learn): The band was so sure their song “Turning Japanese” would be a huge hit that they intentionally released a different single ahead of it, so they wouldn’t be thought of as a one-hit-wonder. These days very few people know the song was by The Vapors and this was their only hit.
@ExtraMedium Serves them right. I’ve always had mixed feelings about that song.
@Kyeh I looked up the meaning to decide if it was too offensive. According to the band, it’s about becoming something unfamiliar or alien to what you know. Not sure that’s less offensive that the assumed meanings people have, but not much worse than saying “it’s all greek to me” when something is unfamiliar.
@ExtraMedium @Kyeh
I think there are plenty of songs in this game that could be considered ‘triggers’ for someone(s). I know I have personally posted a few songs that might be considered inappropriate, but they are, after all, songs, and as such fit the definition of the method of play. Likewise, there have been some that were WAY out of my comfort level (like a string of songs in part 52)
I have a hard time trying to toss out wide swaths of history for what is now considered unacceptable (take a look at the movie “Trading Places” and see if it isn’t questionable in today’s society…). Much as mentioned in @ExtraMedium’s addendum, you have to look at intent, as well as filter it through the times (40+ yrs ago) it was created in.
From the Wiki page about this song:
Songwriter David Fenton explained, “Turning Japanese is all the clichés about angst and youth and turning into something you didn’t expect to.”
@chienfou @ExtraMedium
Sure. I read all that myself too. I just remember thinking at the time “Hey, you should be so lucky, jerk!” I know that a lot of songs have unsavory lyrics - it’s especially part of rock and roll and punk etc. to be offensive on purpose. I was just saying that personally I’ve always felt like that song was kind of annoying.
the Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn!
@chienfou damn - I wanted to post an actual Japanese song - just missed my chance!
Oh well - I’ll sneak it in as a reply, so there!
/youtube Fujii Kaze - Kaerou
(It would be hard to link to, anyway)
@Kyeh
sorry… I just happened to be at the computer paying bills!
@Kyeh
He DOES have a few English titles on his albums though, so there is that!
@chienfou I just thought it would be fun to add a song that’s actually Japanese! Just wasn’t fast enough.
I know a good number of the comments here aren’t videos but it’s running long and already loading a bit slowly so I’m moving us to Part 58. See you there!
@ExtraMedium
Thanks! I’ll try to update the cheat sheet soon.
