Don’t Hug Me, I’m Scared
9A few years back someone told me about this crazy not-for-children children’s show. There are six of them. This is episode 1. If you like unnerving, David-Lynch-like things this might be your bag.
The series gets weirder as it goes along. Childhood can be bewildering and alienating in ways that this series captures hauntingly well. It pops up in my thoughts from time to time, so now I’m foisting it on you.

@bleedmichigan I can never thank you enough!
@UncleVinny for what?
@bleedmichigan for completing my world? duh? Ralph?! Is this thing on!?!
@bleedmichigan I just introduced a coworker to this and Charlie the unicorn recently. Then I introduced some of my college students to it. They came back to me a couple of days later quoting both. I told them being old has advantages sometimes.
@bleedmichigan
Kaaaaaarl
@bleedmichigan Das is Monty Python.
@varsityblue50 yes it is
@carl669 Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarl
@lichme liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiich!
@bleedmichigan I liked the llamas, it’s a pity that they’re no longer with us…
Not quite sure what the person who turned you onto this little series was into, seems to be somethin that the Charles Mansan’s and all other degeneratives of the world would like, or maybe even where they developed their twisted minds. Who knows?!
The one thing that it brought me back to was a favorite song of mine from childhood by Harry Chapin, Flowers Are Red…
@Lynnerizer a great tune by an awesome songwriter who died too soon…
OWLS! TOWELS! JOWLS! AWESOME!
On the one hand, disgusting meat materials and frenetic motion. That’s off putting. I guess dissociation was the point.
Then again, “green is not a creative color” is a powerful hook. I’m afraid I might watch more of this.
@InnocuousFarmer No hugs will be given.
@InnocuousFarmer yes! That’s the kind of mad humor that kept me watching.
@UncleVinny It feels true to my memories of childhood. Being totally befuddled, missing the point entirely. What were the adults even talking about, with the world always approaching you at right angles.
@InnocuousFarmer I feel that way about my adulthood and incipient senility, too. Plus, ever since I watched the trailer for Emma (2020) I’ve been barfing and now I’ll never be able to stop.
@UncleVinny Couldn’t find the trailer. Got stuck with some ad that wouldn’t load, gave up. I skimmed the synopsis on Wikipedia, though, which is basically the same thing.
So… Jane Austin, huh?
When I saw this topic, I thought that the new video had been posted. I got excited. I am sad that it has not. sigh.
If anyone really goes down the dhmis rabbit hole, there is a LOT that gets hidden in all of the videos. It’s really a “look at how the media treats children” perspective and it does get more and more wild as the series goes on. #4 is my personal favorite. Give us all your personal information, and we’ll give you three choices: shop, work, waste time.
@Collin1000 exactly! There’re a ton of explainer videos on YT that spell out some spooky connections in and interpretations of the series that I missed,
I was watching this clip and my daughter, who is home from college this weekend, heard it from across the room and began singing along with it and laughing. So apparently this is a thing with her cohort. Do I need to look for a cult deprogramming professional?
@macromeh you should start a lucrative business as a Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared therapist.
Well, I know what I’ll be doing for the next… [checks watch] …however long it takes to watch 'em all.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thanks for posting!
