@Crood we have lost the hex wrench that is the right size for one piece of furniture we need to fix (piece came loose and the other ~20 hex wrenches we have are too big or small). Do you think this one might work, and can i borrow it? Especially since it doesn’t seem to be well-utilized here.
Never been in one. Seen one from outside. Intend to visit a few one that will open 2017, once the first open crowds become reasonable.
People seem to not find it horrible. You can order from the web and never deal with most of the store, just like Sears and Monkey Wards catalog pickup from the 1950’s.
It depends on my general familiarity with the type of product and what I’m trying to do. Having standardized icons can help a lot for skipping the manuals.
I usually look at the thing, see if I think I know what I am doing, glance at a couple of random entries in the manual to see if my thoughts match and proceed. For complicated electronics I use them at the base level for a while, then try reading the whole manual, give up, and continue using them at the base level till they are several years past when they are obsolete. Repeat. I just preordered a fancy new phone and I am not looking forward to learning how to use it.
I just read a piece of my new Prius manual that made the HUD useable for me. I was thinking it just want designed for people over six foot, but it turns out its adjustable. I might read more.
I’m a technical writer. I’m the guy that writes those manuals. That said, I only read them when something goes wrong or if I’m putting together something really complicated.

@awk I know how you’re going to answer our polll “do you remember every Meh poll?”
@dave and I know how you’re going to answer the “how good are you at predicting forum members’ answers to the ‘do you remember every Meh poll?’ poll”
@awk Thanks for finding that. It saved me having to do it.
Fuck no.
@jbartus Fucking A fuck no.
@therealjrn Fuck to the fuck fucking no.
@jds2001 I’m confused. Is that a “yes”?
“What, never?”
“No, never!”
“What, never?”
“Hardly ever!!!”
Ikea manuals are the worst, but their Swedish meatballs are very delicious and desirable to the taste.
@Crood
@thismyusername why didn’t they show the step of the facehugger using the hex wrench to open the egg?
@RiotDemon

@thismyusername not only did they not use the hex wrench, they didn’t show water in the needed items. Sheesh, Ikea, get with the program.
@therealjrn
I have never shopped at IKEA.
@PlacidPenguin I have never even seen an IKEA.
@therealjrn
IKEA is a real thing?!?
It sounds too horrible to be real.
