@Tadlem43 Dowdle puzzles are great! I have a bunch of them (yet to build). A few years ago these were featured a lot at Costco and they had a special event where I got to meet the artist’s daughter (or daughter-in-law). Being in Pacific Northwest there were a lot featuring local scenes including the major college football stadiums (Go Ducks! )
@Star2236@Tadlem43 just a regular “jigsaw” puzzle style. Usually 250, 500 or 1000 pieces. Instead of using typical “postcard” art these are regional images done by a local artist. Not sure if still made in the U.S. as I said they have been sold a lot at Costco. There was even one of life on a typical day at a Costco. Typically sell for about $10.
@pmarin@Star2236 It’s a brand of puzzles. They are artist renditions of cities, colleges, parks, sites, etc. Outstanding quality puzzles, lots of fun to work.
@pmarin@Star2236 They sell for about $25 on their website, but I buy mine at Walmart, if I can find them, ebay, yard sales, thrift stores, etc. I have boxes of them!
@hchavers I just survived 5 months of horrible heat; looking forward to some cold and maybe snow. I moved to Pacific Northwest because of maybe a week or two or hot weather and now it’s most of 5 months. Luckily this year was not so bad for wildfire smoke.
@aetris ah yes, for Christmas last year it was a pair of burst pipes. They’re fixed, but the ceilings and walls are still damaged. I should at least tape-suture them to cut down on drafts.
@jkawaguchi yes that’s my dream too. I’d been stocking up sets for years until I retired recently (also FOMO of missing sets that would be unavailable later). Now that I might have more time, some arthritis issues popped up in my hands and I can no longer sit on the floor at the low table (I could sit down but maybe not get up easily).
Lesson: age can hit you fast. Play with your toys whenever you can!
EDIT I do have some Formula1 sets arriving next week. 2x points this week.
Paint. Stripping paint. Applying paint badly to home surfaces. Applying more paint to cover the badly painted paint. Removing paint from items that shouldn’t have been painted.
@probablecaws I used to attempt things like this. I decided now it was better to pay people. Especially if it involves going up on ladders. However I did notice outside in my atrium area that was worked-on, I has scraped paint chips everywhere that were never cleaned-up. Oh well, that part at least I can do. “Good help is so hard to find”
@Kyeh@pmarin@probablecaws I painted ours a few years ago for that very reason! It was cheaper for me to rent a boom to get up to the highest bits as our property is on a bit of a slope. Also I didn’t want to deal with scaffolding.
@pmarin I complain about the help here (myself) all the time. I’m terrible. Always creating more work for myself. I’d like to be able to hire somebody then tell them to take extra care with the finish work.
I am going to organize the house and kitchen and sort out piles of important papers.
UPDATE who am I kidding? I am going to watch football and car racing.
@pskemp2
That’s such a cool craft! I’d been thinking about having a horse head made for my nieces equestrian business from a guy I found locally. There’s more people doing this than I ever thought.
Do you have any pictures of your work you’d be willing to share?
@chienfou hehe, good question! their cherry tree is still down from the last hurricane and I’m taking it little by little. I also used some of my own downed trees after hurricane Florence.
@Lynnerizer I made a dolphin and gave it to my daugher and her husband for their third (wooden) anniversary. I started to make a shark but when the mouth turned up into a smile it was thereafter a dolphin. haha!
@Lynnerizer idk yet, maybe a sea turtle, a jellyfish, or an octopus? I’m waiting for the wood to tell me what it wants to be, hehe. the dolphin turned out so good I’m almost afraid to start another one; so I’m experimenting with potatoes… can always eat the mistakes and no one ever knows
@Kyeh@Lynnerizer that’s an interesting and creative idea! I just thought the grain would be whatever it turns out to be, never actually thought of using it purposefully.
@pskemp2
I love underwater sealife idea, those are some of my favorite things to see created in art form! But like you said, let that wood speak to you! Practicing on a potato is a smart idea! I’ve seen people carve heads with crazy faces and let them dry out, they’re super cool looking when they shrivel up and end up looking like an old person! I’m pretty sure it’s a potato they used… I was going to ask you if you started out with a chainsaw and just did the finish work with carving tools? @kyeh had a good idea too of using the striations in the wood as part of the design! You guys should collaborate on a project… Lol…
Now that the garage will be at a tolerable temperature, going to continue working subprojects on my '71 Dodge. Finish the A/C box rebuild, then rebuilding a 46RH automatic that I’m going to adapt to the car. Its so miserable to work in their with the heat but so easy to keep it warmed up to a cool work temp no matter how cold it gets outside.
No.
@yakkoTDI You know what they say about idle hands…

@ircon96 Well the trunk is outdoors.
@yakkoTDI That’s right, you “Sunshine Staters” don’t exactly need an indoor hobby.
Play video games.
What is this winter of which you speak?
@Cerridwyn Not cool.
Reading
Models, computers, coins, soldering… fun times. I HATE snow and cold!
Crocheting all the things. It’s my bedtime fidget spinner.
@sillyheathen No knitting?
@yakkoTDI I’ve never attempted to knit tbh.
Kinda indoors? Heated bay at the local golf club. Kind alike a top golf but uses teackman technology. That and golf Sims
Crafts. Any kind.
Porn…
@somf69
@somf69 Porn? Let’s see, that’s the left side of the ship, correct?
@somf69 online master debater club.
@phendrick @somf69 And i think they call the right side stiffasaboard, no…?
Hibernating
@heartny
THIS. See you in the spring!
Coins, jigsaw puzzles (Dowdle), and watching old movies.

What will I do with our 1 week of winter? Hibernate is a real good option, or video games.
Maybe I will clean my home office. No, better not get extreme. Plus, it’s only a week.
@hchavers I just survived 5 months of horrible heat; looking forward to some cold and maybe snow. I moved to Pacific Northwest because of maybe a week or two or hot weather and now it’s most of 5 months. Luckily this year was not so bad for wildfire smoke.
No reason for it to not be the same indoor hobbies as in summer.
Home repair.
@aetris ah yes, for Christmas last year it was a pair of burst pipes. They’re fixed, but the ceilings and walls are still damaged. I should at least tape-suture them to cut down on drafts.
@pakopako Ouch, that’s a rough one. Fingers crossed you don’t get mold!
@aetris @pakopako This stuff is great at dealing with mold, whether past, present, or future.

And the treadmill instead of running outside
@sleuth
And conveniently you can do both at the same time.
I paint.
@BergyD oh me too!!! What’s your favorite medium?
@BergyD @sillyheathen Mine is @ExtraMedium.
@BergyD @ExtraMedium @ircon96 @sillyheathen

@sillyheathen acrylic
LEGOs! Lots to build!
@jkawaguchi yes that’s my dream too. I’d been stocking up sets for years until I retired recently (also FOMO of missing sets that would be unavailable later). @jkawaguchi @pmarin Get an adjustable height table?

@pmarin @probablecaws Ugh, I just got a quote on getting my house & garage painted and OMG it’s SO EXPENSIVE

!!!
@Kyeh @pmarin @probablecaws I painted ours a few years ago for that very reason! It was cheaper for me to rent a boom to get up to the highest bits as our property is on a bit of a slope. Also I didn’t want to deal with scaffolding.

I’ll still be running outdoors.
But on the mornings when the temperature drops below 27°, I’ll run in the afternoon.
I am going to organize the house and kitchen and sort out piles of important papers.
UPDATE who am I kidding? I am going to watch football and car racing.
Arts and crafts
It will be papercraft, like every winter.
@Oldelvis do you scrapbook or origami or?
chainsaw art, i’m turning the neighbor’s trees into totem poles, dolphins and pelicans
@pskemp2
Are they ok with that or is this a surprise??
@pskemp2

@Lynnerizer @pskemp2
NICE!
@chienfou @Lynnerizer @pskemp2
I love that! Such beautiful patterns in the wood, too.
@pskemp2
What are you going to make next?
It’s BEAUTIFUL, thanks for sharing! And you’d never know it started out as anything other than a dolphin!
@Lynnerizer @pskemp2 With that wood grain, you could even do a zebra! Or maybe a hawk or owl that has beautiful patterns in its feathers?
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer that’s an interesting and creative idea! I just thought the grain would be whatever it turns out to be, never actually thought of using it purposefully.
@Lynnerizer @pskemp2 I hope we get to it (them!) whatever you end up making!
@Lynnerizer @pskemp2
Get to SEE …
@pskemp2
But like you said, let that wood speak to you!
