This is what hearing protection is for. They're big, they're bulky, and as long as people don't think they're bluetooth, it is very obvious that their sole purpose is to block other people out. Also, works better at actual sound isolation, which is really more important to me. I'm actually available to take them off if you need to talk to me.
I feel a little guilty (and dirty) about it, but I splurged on Bose QC25's a week or so ago. I detach the cable and flip them on all day at work (cube farm) and it is absolutely majestical.
@mikey That sounds much better than the sound of baby screaming, and on the occasion that she's not screaming, the toddler is melting down about something. Hmmm....headphones playing nothing might be a good idea!
It doesn't work. You know that coworker who responds to emails and IMs by Kramering into your cube and blurting the exact words he should have just typed into the response window? That guy? Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's no stopping him.
I wear headphones when my husband goes into his "I can't hear the television" mode and turns it way up. I'm not listening to anything, it's just that I find the sound of the blaring television unbearable.
When I had a job, NOTHING ensured someone talking to you like putting headphones in! I could go all day without anyone talking to me, and the minute I started listening to something people would start a conversation with me making me have to take my headphones out.
I'm sorry, what did you say?
I like wearing headphones because I feel comfy in them
Other missing options:
@awk Also: "I'm wearing these so you think I'm not eavesdropping."
@awk I may have done #2. More than once.
@awk pretty much one and two of these. happens a lot. My ears like the warmth.
I hate things touching my ears. I prefer not to wear headphones
All the time.
I keep earbuds in for general noise reduction. My office cubicle is in an industrial area.
On airplanes and trains to keep the person sitting next to me from starting up a conversation when I want to read/sleep/daydream/etc.

I work from home and the only noise I hear from 7am - 5:30pm is the sound of me talking to myself so I don't go insane.

Oh yes. I like it when people think I can't hear them talking, but I totally can. Oh yes....

Thankfully, this is a rare occurrence.
I would wear them in the shower to keep my ears dry.
All the time.. It's the only way I can legitimately ignore the panhandlers in the NYC subway...
