@kjady I truly enjoyed this movie that was at the time called Star Wars. It was EPIC seeing it on the big screen about 2 weeks or so after release. We used to go into what was at the time Manns Chinese to watch movies. Saw Star Trek the Motion Picture there and Empire too. If I close my eyes I can still see the scrolling credits and the anticipation of the film.
I remember when Return was Revenge until not long before release. My ex even had a Revenge of the Jedi T Shirt (yes, they were made with the ‘official’ images on it)
So yeah, there was a time. Somewhere around Jar Jar I was done. Haven’t seen one since.
My daughter loved Ewoks. People don’t remember the made for kids Ewok movies that were family fun.
🫣 What can I say, I’m just not really into either of them…
If it makes you feel any better the confusion is sorted quickly and ONLY in my mind. Knowing there could be repercussions, I get it together before it comes out my mouth.
All that said In a attempt to redeem myself/save face, or maybe just excuses. Perception IS key!
@ItalianScallion@kjady@pmarin @Lynnerizer - same here. I saw the original Star Wars but none of the others, and I’ve only caught the occasional episode of the various Star Treks here and there over the years. I mean - I don’t get them confused, but I don’t know a whole lot about either one!
@ItalianScallion@kjady@Lynnerizer When there were only 1 or 2 or 3 movies it was OK. (Except for the singing Ewoks). Then life got busy and nobody knew if anything new would happen. Maybe the 3 movies (out of a proposed 9) was OK.
Then came Jar-Jar. And a zillion animated TV series and follow-on movies somehow completing the story and making new ones. Maybe it’s OK for a new generation of fans. I say someday when I have time I’ll catch up but not sure it’s a priority.
/image Star Wars a new hope there’s nothing for me here now
@chienfou@phendrick Just on TV now by the way, news about the new pope election. I have to say I liked the new (now old) pope. Hard to get into religion on a site like this because it becomes controversial and I was mostly into it for the art and music history. I was baptised though but my father only did it to please his mother (which had already passed). He thought the whole religion thing was a crock.
On the rare occasions I was in a church with the “call and response” thing which I guess you learn early (and I was never taught). Had no idea when to say “and be with you” or to kneel and stand, Again, can’t bring up religion here I think it can be really cool and comforting (regardless what my father thought)
@phendrick@pmarin
I was raised in the Catholic Church but a long stretch where I didn’t attend once on my own. Started going back when I moved my parents next door since they needed a driver. It was amazing how easily I picked up the routine again of when to stand, kneel, cross yourself, etc. etc. as well as the call and responses. Sort of like riding a bike I guess. Now that both my parents have passed I am once again not attending, but I must say there was a certain comfort in the ritual.
@phendrick
I hear ya!
I recently started reading the obituaries and I think about that phrase/joke I used to hear “old people” say… It’s a good day when I read the obituaries and I don’t see MY NAME!
I get that people say it 'cause it sounds cute and similar to “May the Force be with you” but if there is a Star Wars holiday I figure it should be May 25th since that’s the date the original film released.
@FightingMongoos it was a cute little geeky thing that a corner of the internet used to say, tongue in cheek, and then the marketing people got involved and suddenly it wasn’t fun anymore. Corporate ruined it, like they do a lot of things. There did used to be some folks that celebrated, if you could really call it that, both the 4th and the 25th, but again it’s a lot less prevalent now.
I swear this was a Family Guy bit, where Peter and Abe Lincoln’s ghost gab and Abe asks if bullet-proof opera seats have been invented in the future; Peter flatly says no, in the future Americans have to accept they can be shot anywhere anytime for any reason.
@kittykat9180@Lighter@pakopako Hate to say it but thank you all for being here. I was too young at the time but learned pretty quickly. It’s weird that on venues like this that we can still communicate on a site known for selling cheap Chinese stuff. That and the wine site which sometimes helps lubricate communication.
I saw the topic come up overnight and was thinking, I want to say something, but shouldn’t. Glad you are here for me. I’m sure I’m on a watchlist now…
I don’t think “the meaning is lost” but it will be hard to re-discover for people that can act against it. Most don’t even know about it. I saw them deploy govt Goons in Portland OR a few years ago. There was photo evidence of people being swept off the street into cheap Avis rental minivans by people in full camo military gear. Nobody believes me that this happened. I’ll probably be banned for even mentioning it.
EDIT sorry I think my rabbit-hole is getting deeper.
@Pavlov@pmarin One of the guys in the dorm room next to me in my freshman year had a sterno stove and would heat honey and weed in a fry pan and eat it. Did this all the time. Didn’t come back after Christmas break. We had a 4:15 Club too, not 4:20. I guess they wanted to get ahead of all the other colleges in the city.
@toycardriver I grew up in Marin County and I remember when after Star Wars success George Lucas bought something called Lucas Valley Ranch on Lucas Valley road. Co-incidence? It eventually had not just the mansion but guest houses and studios too, all behind the gates of course.
A friend tells a story of driving on Lucas Valley road and a “gang?” of motorcycle riders in full Stormtrooper suits went past him at very high speed.
@milstarr@toycardriver I didn’t witness it but can mostly believe the story. The road was curvy and well-known for speed-racing cars and motorcycles (not legally). A full run would be about 20 minutes and I had a friend that would do timed runs (in a car). I can only imagine how it would be on a sport bike. I think the stormtrooper thing would be OK except for the crotch part; that looked like it would be uncomfortable. (in the first Star Wars movie I still remember thinking Oh, Storm Troopers must have genitals too!) An uncomfortable truth that might be more uncomfortable in that uniform.
My one failing as a geek/nerd is I don’t like Star Wars.
@kjady Same with me, but I don’t consider it a failure at all. In fact, I’m rather proud of it.
@ItalianScallion @kjady Just don’t get it confused with Star Trek!
@ItalianScallion @kjady
Lol
You must be speaking to me @pmarin! I hate to admit it but in my mind I always have to stop and think which one is which.

My daughter loved Ewoks. People don’t remember the made for kids Ewok movies that were family fun.
So yeah, no Star Wars for me anymore.
@kjady @pmarin
Don’t even think that! It would be sacrilege to the highest degree!
@kjady @pmarin
Oh, @Lynnerizer, please tell me you are kidding… please?

@ItalianScallion @kjady @pmarin
🫣 What can I say, I’m just not really into either of them…

May 4th is our eldest child’s birthday, so we will be celebrating that
@guyfromhawthorn Happy Birthday to them! Also my wife’s birthday. And my old manager from work had same birthday too.
May the 4th be with you
… and also with you.
(always sounded a bit Catholic to me…)
@chienfou Bless me Father, for i have signed (and co-signed)
[but that’s going off on a tangent…]
@chienfou @phendrick it’s “and with thy spirit” over here.
@chienfou same! I may have spurted out the response without thinking more than a few times.
@chienfou & Same to YOU!
@mycya4me
Thanks

my favorite star wars (sort of) meme…
@chienfou
I couldn’t help thinking of this:
@chienfou “Vader”? You mean “Father”? “Darth”? You mean “Dark”? You mean “Dark Father”?
@Barc777
“I’m your boss”
“Oh… You’re Mr Stevens?”
“Who’s Mr Stevens?”
“He’s head of catering…”
@chienfou @Kyeh Bringing up something that we had last week, isn’t this the image from “there are FOUR lights?”
i celebrate any day that i can still get out of bed in the morning.
@phendrick
I hear ya!
I recently started reading the obituaries and I think about that phrase/joke I used to hear “old people” say… It’s a good day when I read the obituaries and I don’t see MY NAME!
@Lynnerizer @phendrick I’m not dead yet, but I’d like to still stay in bed a little longer.
My first husband’s birthday was 5/4 so I used to celebrate that. Now I just think fondly of droids and baby Yoda.
@milstarr sounds like a Good Thing to Do!
I get that people say it 'cause it sounds cute and similar to “May the Force be with you” but if there is a Star Wars holiday I figure it should be May 25th since that’s the date the original film released.

@jsfs
Yeah… I get it. Once too many people are in on the joke you feel it loses it’s cachet. Kind of like this.
Yes, it’s my birthday today! 42
@tonylegrone Happy birthday!

@Kyeh @tonylegrone
That’s a PERFECT Giphy!
HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

@tonylegrone so have gained Enlightenment! Happy Birthday & May the Fourth be with be with you!
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer @mycya4me thanks!
@mycya4me @tonylegrone from the picture you don’t look a day over 200. Very strong, you shall be.
Edit: maybe a bit of trouble holding up the cake.
@tonylegrone Happy birthday!
@pmarin lol thanks!
@xenophod thanks!
It is the fifty-fifth anniversary of the Kent State Massacre. The meaning is lost nowadays. And, thus, some movie thing takes the day.
@Lighter
Yup, sad. Here’s Neil Young’s tribute.
@Lighter and 4 days later UNM students protesting the shootings were bayoneted by NM national guard.
@kittykat9180 @Lighter
Dark times
@chienfou @kittykat9180 @Lighter yes, & now it is repeating.
@chienfou @Lighter @mycya4me unfortunately.
@kittykat9180 @Lighter For not dying in the field of battle, die in the quad of your campus? That can’t possibly have been…
https://wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_New_Mexico_bayoneting_incident
…under any presidency but Nixon’s.
I swear this was a Family Guy bit, where Peter and Abe Lincoln’s ghost gab and Abe asks if bullet-proof opera seats have been invented in the future; Peter flatly says no, in the future Americans have to accept they can be shot anywhere anytime for any reason.

I was going to say it is Linda and Hugo’s wedding anniversary in the “Sliding Bobs” episode, but I think it’s 5/5. Which is also Hugo’s height.
@sjk3
and now Cinco de Mayo
@chienfou @sjk3 Sometimes also known as Revenge of the Fifth.
@chienfou @sjk3 @xobzoo back when people could buy a “fifth” of, say, Tequila. When they went to 750ml was slightly less but for same price.
@pmarin
But generally it’s still called a fifth when you go to the liquor store…
I know it’s something to do with Star Trek but I don’t watch those space movies.
@kittykat9180

@kittykat9180 For Star Trek, the celebration date would be September 6 (1966): the date when the original series premiered on TV.
@ItalianScallion isn’t the force thing from the movie?
@kittykat9180 Not from any Star Trek movie.
@kittykat9180 Star Trek is more of a “Live long and prosper” catchphrase.
@berosu
Did I miss something?
Tampa Theatre is celebrating it today!
https://tampatheatre.org/movie-categories/may-the-4th/
Nope, no I don’t
I’m not annoyed by its being brought up, but I also don’t celebrate it.
@sillyheathen I’m not at all a fan of Star Wars, but I have to admit that your mug is awesome!
MUG! SLUG! PUG! AWESOME!
(@mediocrebot, here’s a new reply to awesome for you to use if you’d like.)
POPSOCKETS! SPROCKETS! DAVY CROCKETT! AWESOME!
@ItalianScallion @mediocrebot @sillyheathen Darth likes Cheerios?
@ItalianScallion @mediocrebot @pmarin and cab franc. He’s a very complex character.
@ItalianScallion @mediocrebot @sillyheathen
Not sure he could pronounce Mourvèdre with that breathing mask. I can barely pronounce it myself.
Yes, at 4:20.
@Pavlov Isn’t that a celebration that happens every day?
@ItalianScallion @Pavlov I had a room-mate in college and it happened several times a day.
@Pavlov @pmarin One of the guys in the dorm room next to me in my freshman year had a sterno stove and would heat honey and weed in a fry pan and eat it. Did this all the time. Didn’t come back after Christmas break. We had a 4:15 Club too, not 4:20. I guess they wanted to get ahead of all the other colleges in the city.
I’ll watch the 4k Star Wars movie today. Not episode IV: A New Hope.
@toycardriver They’re up to Episode 4k now? Man, I thought it went to crap before Disney bought it…
@toycardriver E IV was the only good one! Bring on the Ewok and baby Yoda hate!
@pmarin @toycardriver I bet it’s not so easy to ride a motorcycle with a stormtrooper costume on. Not a decent costume anyway.
@milstarr @toycardriver I didn’t witness it but can mostly believe the story. The road was curvy and well-known for speed-racing cars and motorcycles (not legally). A full run would be about 20 minutes and I had a friend that would do timed runs (in a car). I can only imagine how it would be on a sport bike.
