I have to believe in aliens. For much of the summer, one sat on my kitchen window sill watching me, apparently mad that I had not hung the hummingbird feeder in its usual spot. She liked using the window sill as a launch pad to grab unsuspecting hummers, which is why I moved it elsewhere. She was not amused and waved her arms at me when I got close to the window.
@Kyeh Unfortunately, yes. They are notorious for doing that. And once one of them finds the feeder, they can’t be shooed away. They just wait a bit and come back. It is a choice between moving the feeder somewhere out of sight or squishing the invader.
My cousin’s husband (NASA employee high up in the hierarchy) said if there really were aliens from outer space that NASA would take whatever evidence it found and parade it up and down the (Washington) Mall as it would result in the biggest budget bonanza ever.
@blaineg@Kyeh Born in New Zealand to US citizen parents who registered me at the US consulate. I actually have dual citizenship by the laws of both countries at the time, though I’ve never pursued getting a NZ passport (in addition to my US one).
@blaineg@macromeh Hmmm. Too tired to figure it out right now. My late husband was like you, born in France to American parents so he had automatic US citizenship. My mother on the other hand was born in Japan, came here for college, and married an American - so I guess she’d be naturalized?
Hope you feel better soon. I don’t feel bad exactly, just super-lethargic. Perfect for Mehrathon day, although I lucked out and got an IRK last night.
@blaineg@Kyeh It can get pretty confusing.
While my family was in NZ, my older brother (a US-born citizen) married a woman originally from Finland and they had 2 daughters (who were NZ citizens). They all moved back to the US with our parents and me, but his wife and daughters were Finish and NZ citizens, respectively. My brother’s wife eventually naturalized to US citizenship, but the two girls (now adults) moved back to NZ and remained NZ citizens.
While we were all still in NZ, my older sister (a US-born citizen) married a man originally from Switzerland. They remained in NZ when the rest of the family moved back to the US, and had 2 daughters also. I don’t know if either my sister (US) or her husband (Swiss) ever naturalized to NZ citizenship. But I seem to recall that their 2 daughters have dual NZ/Swiss citizenship. (Not really sure just how all that fell out.)
So, family globe-trotting can get complicated.
I believe there are aliens but not that they’ve been here

@rockblossom What the…?
@pmarin @rockblossom There is a lot to unpack here.
@mehcuda67 @pmarin
@rockblossom She could actually catch hummingbirds??? And eat them?
@Kyeh Unfortunately, yes. They are notorious for doing that. And once one of them finds the feeder, they can’t be shooed away. They just wait a bit and come back. It is a choice between moving the feeder somewhere out of sight or squishing the invader.
@rockblossom I’m amazed!!! I had never heard that. Wow.
@mehcuda67 @pmarin @rockblossom I’ve got to know: What music is playing to that dance the two of them are doing?
@mehcuda67 @phendrick @pmarin @rockblossom
/youtube The Monster Mash
@phendrick I dunno. Maybe Draft Punk?
@phendrick @rockblossom Oh, perfect!
I married one. So, more yes than no.
Illegal or from space? Either way, yes I think they both exist. Just trying to clarify for those who may be confused.
@tinamarie1974 There are legal ones, too
/youtube Sting - Englishman in New York
@Kyeh good point!!!
Nah… that’s why we have the dream act, because they’re just figments of our dreams

@Kidsandliz Hmm, sounds like something someone high up in the ̶h̶i̶e̶r̶a̶r̶c̶h̶y̶ conspiracy would say.
@Kidsandliz And there is absolutely not one chance whatsoever that they would be able to keep it quiet for more than a couple of nanoseconds.

Dang it. I voted wrong. I thought it said ‘Allens’
I married an alien, but she’s a citizen now.
@blaineg I am foreign born and never naturalized, so I guess I fit some of the definitions of alien (although I am a US citizen).
@blaineg @macromeh How does that work - you’re a citizen but not naturalized?
@blaineg @Kyeh Born in New Zealand to US citizen parents who registered me at the US consulate. I actually have dual citizenship by the laws of both countries at the time, though I’ve never pursued getting a NZ passport (in addition to my US one).
@blaineg @macromeh But so “naturalized” means - what? I guess I could research it but I feel lazy (got my Covid booster & flu shot yesterday.)
@blaineg @Kyeh
Details here: https://www.uscis.gov/forms/explore-my-options/become-a-us-citizen-through-naturalization
BTW, I also just got my flu shot this morning (the senior version -> extra potent) and I’m starting to feel it now, so: commiseration.

@macromeh So you’re an unnatural citizen?

@blaineg
That’s probably one of the milder things I’ve been called…
@blaineg @macromeh
@blaineg @Kyeh @macromeh So did your family have a bang-up celebration on October 24 (United Nations Day)?
Missed the input but sure I believe they exist. Universe is way too big for it to be just us out here.
Proof of aliens among us:
