I feel like just about everyone has a 1080p TV nowadays, but only because they're cheap. 4K TVs still don't have the support from the manufacturers and retailers to really offer a viable competition. I think that an entirely new technology that makes TVs obsolete altogether will come about before a majority of people make the switch, but that's still 5-6 years away.
3D really fell flat once the new-ness wore off... I think 3D will fall off completely unless someone develops 3D that doesn't require glasses. That would be highly successful
Supposedly we're supposed to do some experimental 4K broadcasting later this summer on a low power station my full power station also runs. My boss says 4K doesn't have the same Wow-factor compared to HD as HD had to SD. All it really does is keep the picture crisp as you get closer to the TV. Whenever the next version of ATSC comes out (which will also mean a new round of converter boxes for everyone!) I expect most places will stay just HD, just like when we changed from analog to digital most stations stayed SD, just digital SD. All this is still years away, though. My understanding is the ATSC is waiting on the IEEE to standardize H.265 so they can incorporate it into the standard.
I tested some 4K monitors around my office a month or two ago. Most didn't work well with the video cards we had. Seems support just isn't wide for them yet. YMMV.
When it comes to TV I am a wait and see. What ever happened to the distance, size = resolution formula? If I remember correctly most of us do not need 1080 given size of our screens and how far we sit from them. Is 4k an indication of much larger TVs? I googled it and found this.
and this
That being said, I could tell I was on 720 (wife cleaned DVR and hit the resolution button) Even though I fell right into the 720 range and my vision is not 20/20.
The answer lies, as it always does, in the porn industry. VHS beat Beta (which it shouldn't have) because of the porn industry's move to VHS. Blu-Ray beat HD-DVD because of porn. 3D tvs failed for the same reason. BUT...the porn lords are moving to 4k production (as is netflix) so it's safe to assume we'll see an overall adoption of the tech.
I couldn't care less about the resolution because I'm not sure if it'll help much. But I'm pretty sure there's an increased color range (from 8 to 10 bits) that'll help make the picture look better. Nobody ever seems to bring this up when having this discussion.
My Local station JUST upgraded their Production equipment to HD. within the last couple months. anything from the "network" was broadcast in HD, but anything produced locally, was in Digital SD. most of the syndicated shows they run are still in SD. (Wheel/Jeopardy, Friends, even shows that always were HD in their original network Run, like 30 Rock and The Big Bang Theory, end up with black bars on all 4 sides )
Few years away
Local TV just caught up and got everything converted to HD. UHD or 4K as a standard is at least 10 years away.

Holodecks?
Real life?
Amazon has, and they call it a phone. Meh.
No one could afford it. If the technology was affordable, then yes, next big thing. Also the shows on tv aren't even all HD yet, let alone 4K.
What shows do you watch that aren't in HD? Literally every show is recorded in HD now and has been for a long time.
Also 4K TVs are extremely affordable http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889522025

4k looks nice, and movies are often shot at 5k or even 8k.
but unless you really want to see every facial blemish on that actor, the rest of the craft needs to catch up.
I thought I was watching a film about the Grand Canyon... Turns out it was just a close up of Edward James Olmos...
This is what they said about SD to HD.
@caffeine_dude It's a fair point though, a lot of content doesn't really benefit much from higher rez. Avatar? Sure. Midsomer Murders? Nope.

Excited for the future where I've got that 4K 10" screen 0.8 inches from my eye.
Speaking of Resolution... I want to put a 150" projection screen in my living room... So whenever Meh wants to offer up projectors, I'll be on that.

This. This should be featured in Freakonomics. Brilliant.
As always, the reason is Boobies.
@DaveInSoCal as if there could ever be any other reason
You sure know a lot about it. Remind me not to shake your hand next time I see you.
The answer always lies in porn.

They probably still don't have HD recording equipment in their master control, or their people aren't using the new stuff yet.
Check your TV and equipment video settings, you may find a way to remove the bars.
I'll probably just wait and get 4k whenever the thing that's better than 4k comes out.
