Discord server and new ID verification reqs
2I have barely used discord. Not for anything that matters.
A friend of mine is a member of several local (to him) writers groups. They are on discord and don’t wanna move.
Discord prompted him to upload a DL pix. He did. The groups are pretty useful to him (personal and biz)
So I logged onto Discord to see if I would be prompted.
I’m not currently willing to give them my DL.
I know every data co if size already has all that but I’m disinclined to roll over and cooperate. So if Discord prompts for it I’ll delete the app and maybe my account (if can do so with no DL)

I have some reason to believe that Telegram is used by the Russian security services, tho very quietly (they don’t wanna scare people off of it)
They may even own it.
No effect on me, I don’t use it. I’m disinclined to
Signal seems ok but I’ve never heard it good for groups.
Slack is tolerable.
Then there are the gigantic tech products. Meta and Google and so forth.
Google no doubt knows all about me. I use FB ultra minimally (family thing)
I would not give Meta my L. They prob already know that but Zuck sux. If FB asks I’ll kill my account.

So … what experiences have you all had with all this?
What are your thoughts? Would you upload your DL?

All the world cons use Discord for their virtual conventions. I honestly don’t know what they would do with that became a requirement. Could it potentially be a server choice, not a Discord choice but an option?
Here’s what the “All-Knowing” Google AI has to say:
@MrGoodGuy thank you
i didn’t look it up but
Until they pass voter ID for everyone I think this is just performative posturing. I haven’t been asked for a DL, but I don’t like it.
@therealjrn ditto. And with all the Privacy rights and the EU I wonder if this is even legal over there. But it’s not just an American platform so do you have different standards for somebody that’s in Spain or Germany or australia? And then what if they come to the United States and want to login
Three letters that are supposed to defeat boundaries: VPN.
Thing that will make access to a great many sites difficult: VPN, at least that’s my experience if the VPN is Surfshark.
Your experience with others might help people decide.
