@ACraigL I get them every week and have played exactly one- Little Inferno. I liked the screaming.

Same here on the backlog. A few have been really good. GTA V and Subnautica, for examples. I think Frostpunk was another. A bunch of Lego games too. None of it will convince me to play Fortnite.

I think my Epic backlog is bigger than my Steam backlog at this point.

@ACraigL I have been collecting their games for a while. Unfortunately I forgot for several months. Now I have it remind me. Even if my laptop cannot run the games, I grab them for the future.

@ACraigL @RiotDemon Note that you can grab them from the store via any browser window (so, from a phone or other non-gaming system); you don’t need to run the Epic client on your gaming PC just to claim the games.

@RiotDemon That’s still a net negative for both you, and gaming and general.

All of your telemetry and personal data is going to the CCP for monitoring. On top of that, you’re supporting a platform that has been openly anti-gaming, anti-competition, and anti-consumer by buying out cash-strapped developers with exclusivity deals, which keeps them on their platform during release (and no one ends up buying them because the platform is used 99% for LoL and Fortnite), and then no one buys them on other platforms when the exclusivity contracts run out because the games are dead by that point.

Even just logging in to claim and play free games is a net positive for them, because it skews the platform’s popularity metrics, and this allows them to have even more power.

etc. You see the theme, I’m sure. Epic didn’t invent the model. If anything, they’re a “me too” jump-on-the-bandwagon outfit.

Everything-as-a-service and microtransactions and half-game, half-DLC game development have also done their part to destroy gaming as much as the platforms demanding game architecture be beholden to the distribution platform.

Yeah, EA has never bought a studio and then run the developers into the ground.

And Microsoft never collects surveillance telemetry on their customers.

And Sony would never hack industry standard media and formats to perpetuate and embed proprietary DRM into their products.

And just what do you think “console excusives” are all about?

@mike808 @RiotDemon Once again, none of these things are the same as the issues I mentioned, which are (1) forwarding the personal data of Western customers directly to CCP, and (2) buying out developers for temporary exclusivity rights in order to hurt other platforms at the expense of destroying the prospects of these games to be successful in the long term.

This is not the same as collecting user data but using it in a way that doesn’t benefit the government of a geopolitical rival, or having long-running exclusive franchises on your platform.

@halfling my laptop is too much of a potato for phasmo, which sucks cuz my friends play it and I’d love to join.

I actually play on Stadia.
