Just don’t stick it smack in the middle of your windshield like it is in the pictures. Even if you don’t get a speeding ticket, you’ll likely get one for having an obstructed view of your windshield. Mount it near the top, out of the way. Don’t hang phone mounts where they obstruct your view either.
@mchamden1 Generally if these have a screen at all it’s tiny. It’s not what you’re looking for if you want a back up cam.
That being said, I cannot recommend enough that everyone have a dash cam. I have been hit-skipped before, and I’ve even given footage to another hit-skip victim when I captured the incident on camera. It might not always “catch” the bad guy, but it can help prove no-fault to both the authorities and your insurance company.

@brennyn that’s how you do it in Europe. Like in Paris, you leave the brake off or only lightly engaged, so when you get bumped outta the way, it doesn’t ding too much.
@finalremix That’s what I do, parking brake at first click and transmission in first gear. Still annoying that so many people think that’s just how people park.
@mocanlagunas I’ve never found one of those that would hold for more than a few minutes after moving it to a different location, no matter how much I tried to clean the glass and the cup.
I’m concerned that the adhesive on this cam will fail in the intense heat we get here in Texas in the summer; we shall see. I greatly prefer the type of mount that requires a 3D printer to create; it clamps to the rear view mirror’s arm.
Has anyone used this? After seeing Linus Tech Tips’ video on how every dash cam seems to use the same cheap SOC and image sensor, it feels like throwing money away if you’re hoping to catch license plate numbers.
@killians1978 Short answer: No, this dashcam does not have enough pixels for license plate recognition.
Reading a license plate requires around 100 pixels across the plate. USA plates are 12 inches wide, this camera has 1920 pixel resolution horizontally, and spreads them across 160° of view. That works out to a max license plate readability distance of ~7 feet. If another car’s plate is within 7 feet of this camera, it’s also obscured below the hood line or smashed into the camera cars front bumper! There are some sources that claim 50 pixels is sufficient. Using that increases the recognition distance to ~14 feet meaning the car needs to be about 1/2 of a car length in front of the camera car.
@mwarren This is an even better answer than LTT gave. Because math, can you translate this to a feasible resolution for an actually effective dash cam? I know even 4K cameras with horrendously small image sensors and processors can theoretically produce that many pixels, but whether they’re just junk pixels or an unreadable, desaturated mess always feels up in the air.
@blaineg@kostia It is difficult to dislodge an existing well-established and still-functional technology. Look at the internal combustion engine for a really flagrant example.
I see what you did there and I am sending it to the cops.
So is someone at Meheadquarters using one of these cameras to film a new video for us today?
Or, in other words, no video was posted for today. No “Ask Irk” or Glen being weird or singing cowboy or anything. Not even a banana sitting there.
Damn… Cobra’s a nice brand. I’ve got their radar scanner already. This might beat out that no-brand dash cam I got here a few years back.
Buy two of these so that you can have a camera view in every cardinal direction. It’s kind of like having Dragonfly vision but not at all but kind of.

Does this give a legitimate reason to look at my phone when driving? “Look officer, I have a dashcam too.”
Can this be used as a back-up camera?

There are an alarming number of people that think it’s completely normal to parallel park by physically shoving other cars out of the way.
@brennyn @finalremix Hit me with your best shot.
I prefer the ones with suction cups so I can move them to other cars, like when I’m renting a car somewhere… otherwise I’d be in for one.
@mocanlagunas I’ve never found one of those that would hold for more than a few minutes after moving it to a different location, no matter how much I tried to clean the glass and the cup.

I go nuts when I see micro-usb charging ports on newer stuff. I’m trying to get rid of those cables!
@kostia New? This dates to 2018, that’s why it’s here.
@blaineg Okay, well, that’s still too recent for micro usb in my book! And still, new stuff has it and it bugs me.
@blaineg @kostia It is difficult to dislodge an existing well-established and still-functional technology. Look at the internal combustion engine for a really flagrant example.
$40 for the refurb? Sure. Maybe I’ll even install it. This time.

@blaineg Eek! Some of those were NSFW!
@blaineg maybe still SFW just 'cause of some careful manscaping. Not sure about the rodent though.
@blaineg this is faaarrrr from the most frightening “woodchuck” on Battlestar Galactica.
@pmarin I had to do several edit/save cycles to get something that tame.
@blaineg If that was a woodChuck, shouldn’t there be some distortion of the towel in the frontal area? And how do we know that’s Chuck?
