The Chesapeake Bay......Gone?
13I was looking at the wOOt sales stat map today and I began to wonder, “where the hell is the Chesapeake Bay?”
Is there no love for it? Was it just easier not to include it in the map because someone was lazy? Did mdot finally decide to just fill it in rather than pay for the Bay Bridge maintenance? Or, did chicken farming runoff from the Eastern Shore just finally fill it up?
Where the hell is the Chesapeake? I demand that wOOt redesign this map to bring back the crabs that were so sorely loved there. I want a campaign to Save the (fucking) Chesapeake from wOOt!
p.s. the white spot is Delaware, not the Bay.

Why are you posting this here? meh has the bay on their map. Just checked.
Because I can (you see many other threads popping up around here? pfft). And you are right, meh did not have a problem including it on their map. But we already know they are better at such things.
@Kidsandliz Plus, I would love for people to flood woot’s customer service with Chesapeake Bay requests just for fun
@mfladd Ask and you shall receive:
It has recently come to my attention that Chesapeake Bay is not on your sales map. Thought it must be a mistake but alas, its true. Are you banned from that area? Did they do something to hurt your feelings? Unless they legally requested that you leave them out of Woot and Woot shenanigans, I politely request that you update your map to show Chesapeake Bay on it.
Thanks a million,
Tracie
@mehbee awwwwwe…You’re a Rockstar!
p.s. I emailed them too
No, Hon, it’s still there, but it’s a secret plot to keep dem tourists away from eating all the Jimmies & Sallies, and drinking up all the Natty Bo.
So, come on down to the shore, Hon. Enjoy some crabs wooder-side, and chat about dem O’s without all dem pesky tourists.
@LaVikinga
I see you speak Marylander.
@mfladd I did some time in the DC area, way back when Don & Mike were still on the radio at WJFK. It’s one of those accents that makes me laugh, but that I can’t do myself.
BTW, I noticed the islands off of Apalachicola, FL, and part of the Florida Keys have gone missing, too
@LaVikinga Paint your bald spot?
@jpu That’s the Natty Bo beer guy. He only has one eye - probably an industrial accident, or possibly a gang related incident in Baltimore.
@mfladd Mr Boh never had the other eye. The original artist said it just looked interesting that way. Gunther brewing a rival brewer on brewers hill had the slogan “Gunthers got it” so basically gunthers got the eye.
@LaVikinga Whoo! Don & Mike!
Carry on.
@jpu I don’t know what you’re talking about, sir, my hair grows!
@NotEd3k Please tell me you are aware that Mike has his own show and has for years! http://mikeomearashow.com/
@LaVikinga So does Don. Separately they’re not as good as they were together.
@mfladd Maybe the Pringles guy stole his other eye.
@jpu They’ve definitely gone in different humor directions, but I stopped listening to Don’s more acerbic show when it went to pay to listen and I realized I was laughing more listening to Mike and his weekly misguided rave outs.
@LaVikinga You can doctor tapes . . .
@jpu Speaking of tapes: http://www.paintyourbaldspot.com/
(Heard Tom Gavin passed away a few weeks ago. ROAR! RIP, Tom.)
@LaVikinga Heh, have been listening lately to the 2000s. How youuuu dooooooin’?
So many from the show are gone: Tom, Gladys Kravitz, Timmy Oh-Bye-Ben-A, The Belcher… Who’s next? Mr. 40 or Dennis P. Murphy?
@jpu I’ve listened since the WAVA days and have caught all the incarnations. I miss Buzz, but like the way the show has found its footing despite the shake up.
Facebook has done a fantastic job of making them all accessible to their listeners. My husband still thinks I’m a bit strange that I get all excited when one of the guys likes my comments and he got out right jealous when ol’ HBS lost his damned mind a few summers ago, swiped one of my facebook photos and made me an old school pinup of the day (I realize I’m doxxing myself). He’s a rascal.
Hearing Timmy had died made me feel whistful & old, but of all the losses of people I didn’t know, my heart went out to Mike when his mom passed away. They had such a wonderful relationship & I always enjoyed her chatting on the phone with them all. She was pretty darned witty and sharp.
@LaVikinga Yeah, I listened a little when it was still on WJFK, then moved out of state when the station changed formats. After they went podcast I tried to listen, but the show was always something I listened to on the way home from work in the car and I didn’t really download podcasts. Eventually I just got out of the habit of listening.
I am a bit bummed I never got my D&M sweatshirt before Don “retired” for calling in once to play “American Fido”. I assume it sort of got forgotten as that was really close to when he left the show, so the station probably didn’t have as much promotional items left.
Wasn’t even aware Don came back until I read it here.
Woot needs to do a big donation to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Pave the Bay!
@ETILUVU It would cetainly make some of my commute times shorter…but NO! Love the Crab!
Didn’t you hear?
Amazon bought it and will be filling it in. That’s where their next distribution center is going.
@f00l It was bad enough when they built the one on the Western shore and started taxing me.
@mfladd
Now they’ll be able to get stuff to you more quickly.
The bad news: the # of vehicles on the road will double. 1/2 of them will be Amazon delivery vehicles.
@f00l And you are right on another point. If people didn’t have to wait in line to cross that damn bridge in the summer more of them would come. There are enough of those assholes in Ocean City as it is.
@mfladd
http://www.ci.salisbury.md.us/
http://www.salisbury.edu/
Family members live there.
@f00l Ahhh! I have probably passed them on the street. Go Gulls! SU is actually a desirable school. 80% of the students are from out of state. The school likes it that way…show me the out-of-state money!
@mfladd
My relative’s parents were in Baltimore at the time. SU wanted him to play for them. It worked out.
And then he married another, local (Salisbury area) alumnus, so … lots of crabs. Lots of time at the shore.
Some of the wedding celebrations might have been here:
https://www.evolutioncraftbrewing.com
@f00l EVO! That is right across from the hospital I work in some days. Food is good. When I first moved here I was in culture shock and said two yrs max. But slowly, but surely, this place sucks you in. Slower pace of life, low cost of living, and little traffic. Lots to do in summer. People here are also very friendly.
@mfladd
I very much enjoyed my five hour tour of Baltimore and Fort McHenry, and an an intoxicated meetup with “fellow travelers” at some crab place across the Bay Bridge, followed by three days of extreme non-sobriety in Salisbury.
If, about 2 years ago, mid-winter, your ears and brain were curdled by hideous drunken karaoke, that might have been one of us.
My relatives used to have a place a block or so from Federal Hill Park a decade or so ago? Not very far from there, anyway.
They are in Ohio now, which they love. They miss Baltimore, and the shore, but not MD politics.
@mfladd
Re small towns and small places.
With streaming and internet more or less everywhere, good food infiltrating everywhere, it’s no longer critical to be near someplace “big and active” to have the world available to you.
Got cell and HS ISP and insta-info and do without the expensive life, the expensive real estate, the expensive expectations, the traffic, the crowds, that taking forever to get anywhere lifestyle.
Would you really wanna go back to Bost-Wash without a big fat career jump?
Wouldn’t the manic crowding and pressure and cost and craziness be an overwhelming net negative? What’s the positive? What, you won’t hear the hot rumors so fast and discuss w super insiders?
If being urban isn’t gonna make you rich or powerful, how about a 10 min commute instead of a 2 hour one? How about a much much nicer lifestyle? How about not being weirded out by the idea of knowing local people? How about a community who cares what’s up with if you let them? How about trusting your kids with relative freedom, which is harder to do the more people or bigger the city, esp new and transitory people?
And your internet is just as good or perhaps better. Google takes care of many info probs. And google tracks you just as much in the city.
@f00l exactly.
@mfladd
Was your hearing destroyed by our drunken karaoke?
That is the question.
@f00l @mfladd
Not clickbait. PROCEED WITH CAUTION. I CAN’T STRESS THAT ENOUGH!
It was there yesterday- I’ll wave at you from the Northern Neck.
I can only assume that they’re gradually filling in the bay with the old ‘War of 1812’ license plates, and once the last of these abominations has been securely dumped they will be sealing it all up in concrete and fencing off the area. The bay is nice and all, but it’s a small price to pay for erasing such a dark era of license plate design from our state’s memory. Presumably w00t is just looking to the future.
@brhfl
I think you’ll want Alamogordo, NM for that.
@PlacidPenguin à la
/image atari et dump?
(blast, you ninja-edited! but yes)
@brhfl
Sure.
After all;
@PlacidPenguin
@brhfl
I’ll compensate you with this:
@PlacidPenguin Coffee. Outta my nose. Eesh.
@brhfl Right? Those damn plates like the one on the back of my car are absolutely the ugliest things.
@PlacidPenguin my plates resemble this. I like them better then the generic MD
@mfladd They’re just not Maryland-y at all, and most people don’t even seem to know what they are. Generally hear them referred to as ‘the fourth of July plates’. The new ones with the subtle flag at the bottom are great, though I’m still rocking
@brhfl That (TtC) is the one my wife has on her car. With my company car I’m not given a choice
@brhfl
Fort McHenry is not Maryland enough for you???
@CaptAmehrican That graphic could just as easily be of a storage unit…
@PlacidPenguin That reminds me of when KY switched to this in 2005 as their STANDARD BASE license plate
They had more people upgrade to the special paid designs in that period than any other.
@Nuurgle
Hehehehehe
You said Kentucky.
/giphy chuckle
@PlacidPenguin I even went there willingly. We all have that part of our life that we’re not super proud of. I made my way back out eventually!
@Nuurgle
Ehhh.
I have nothing to hide.
I’ll deny stuff, but I won’t hide it. (There’s a difference.)
This was really at the core of why we started Meh. We argued as strongly as we could to represent the bay on the map. When we lost that battle we knew we just had to start a new site with a new map that fully displayed the bay in all its glory.
@dave And every crab we eat thanks you for it.
I keep on reading the title as ‘Cheapskate Bay’
Sigh…
/giphy seriously?!?
@PlacidPenguin glad it wasn’t just me…
Wah! I was just there in October… What could have happened?!
@katylava They drained the swamp?
Has anyone noticed you can really zoom in on the Meh map and it will allow you to see granularity of purchases to the zip code? Whenever I do it on my phone, it gets stuck and I can’t change it unless I refresh.
@Fuzzalini
Strange. I can zoom out on my phone without needing to refresh.
Though not really (strange), since different phones, browsers etc.
@Fuzzalini
@PlacidPenguin
Firefox on IOS (which is just a custom wrapper for WebKit I think)
I can zoom to county level but not to zip code level. Can some of you laptop/desktop users see zipcode level zoom?
@f00l mac laptop: safari, firefox and chrome, only county
@Fuzzalini it’s by county, not zip code.
@f00l @Kidsandliz
I figured they were referring to county.
@katylava I finally (after a long time) decided to figure out which square was me. I’m down to 2.
I just moved to Maryland from (shudder) NJ. I am so glad I found this thread, I want to make sure I get the proper license plates. The Chesapeake ones look nice. I just purchased water front property on the bay, do any of you know the proposed time line for the fill in project? I want to make sure I sell before I lose the water front premium.
@btreth I’d say within a month or so now. With the truck blowing off the bridge yesterday, it’s time for everyone to overreact on the response. I suspect the petition already has enough signatures.
@btreth As far as getting the right plates, if you own three or more tractors or seven or more cows, you are legally obligated to get these:
It’s important to keep in mind that in MD, herons rather than storks deliver babies. So these plates come in handy if you’re trying to grow your family; the herons really appreciate the shout-out:
If neither of those things apply to you, you are automatically forced to display your MD pride in one of two ways. You can either use the new standard license plates, designed from the ground up to show off how MD PROUD you are:
…or you can just write some letters on an old Natty Boh can, tape it to your car, and call it a day.
@btreth There is, of course, the Bay Expansion Project. I believe they are counting on global warming, hurricanes, heavy rainfall, etc. to facilitate with that project, especially if the state and federal government pull out.
Related to that is the Island and Coastline Rearrangement Project. This project primarily relies on sand and hurricanes, spring tides and flooding. If you would like to see a sample of that project, Willoughby Spit in Norfolk (south end of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel) is a prime example of the creation end of the project. Not sure when they have scheduled its removal, but being a primary sand dune I’d imagine it is on the the list somewhere.
@Nuurgle When I lived down there they shut the one bridge on a regular basis due to high winds and banned motorcycles, trailers… then as well.
@Kidsandliz
If/when the caps melt, the bay will get a little larger. It might become approx the size of the Atlantic Ocean.
But we won’t have to listen to Floridians bragging about their winter weather much.
@f00l
I notice that Texas would be fine…
@PlacidPenguin No some of TX would be gone… not as much as the lower Mississippi River though. I can’t figure out it if would take out were I live (I hope so as this country would be better off if it was part of the gulf of mexico)
@Kidsandliz
Honestly, as long as it doesn’t affect Nebraska, we should all be fine.
@Kidsandliz
I think Houston might be a little wet and salty.
Here is the reply I received from wOOt. I took it to basically say - go away, shoo!!!

@mfladd
That’s ridiculous. We need
CheapskateChesapeake Bay on the map!@mfladd
We are all happy to have the ability for copy cut paste. Esp, apparently, Woot CS.
Immediately on seeing the Woot response, I wondered if the copy cut paste interface innovation came from XEROX Parc.
Yes, it seems. We owe Larry Tesler for this elegant user interface portion of our computer habits, among his other contribs.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Tesler
https://unplag.com/blog/who-invented-copy-and-paste/

Of course, that CS reply may not have used Tesler’s innovation.
They may have a special keystroke combo or icon for the command to reply by sending “Blow Off Email Reply. Version #43” or similar.
In any case, I hope you’re somewhat relieved that they do not intend to communicate with you further on this matter. Would you want another response like that one?
I think Amazon has completed the digestive process now. Except for @ThunderThighs. Don’t you?
/giphy "blow off"
Eastern Shore! Represent!
Oh yeah, that crab picture? Yup, the water’s definitely that color.
@placeholder Are you a club member? Know the secret handshake?
@mfladd There are no secret handshakes. There are only crab mallets and duck calls.
@placeholder
You fell for it. @mfladd was just trying to see if you could keep the truth about the duck calls a secret.
@PlacidPenguin Damn, well I failed y’all. Couldn’t keep a secret. I’ll go turn in my tourist hunting license and move to the western shore.
@placeholder
Can’t let you do that. You know too much.
I hear the Central US is decent though.
Ever thought about Nebraska?
@PlacidPenguin How about Milwaukee? I’ve been there once and it was quite lovely. They’re too nice to put to use the knowledge I have.
@PlacidPenguin Let’s be honest though, my knowledge isn’t THAT dangerous. Most of it is just how to subvert Bay Bridge traffic
@placeholder Shhhhhh! You are going to drop even more secrets!
@mfladd Sir, how dare you accuse me of that! There are some secrets that I will take with me to the grave!
@placeholder by boat
I’m scared of heights and shit like this doesn’t help:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/nc-man-dies-after-tractor-trailer-he-was-driving-plunges-over-chesapeake-bay-bridge-tunnel/2017/02/10/9a215e0a-ef90-11e6-9662-6eedf1627882_story.html?utm_term=.ec9b0a340e7a
I’ll be staying on my side of the bridge.
@sammydog01
If the wind is reasonable, and I’m not driving a tractor-trailer, the bridge/tunnel is one of my fav tribes.
@sammydog01 That bridge is a death trap. The worst is when they close one side of the bridge and then have two way traffic on one side. If even one person strays a little bit you are looking at a pileup.
@mfladd They need to install the Road Zipper.
