Certified Beer Server
8Wanted to go back to school for a certification of some kind (I am perpetually restless)... Did not see anything online --through a community college as I am not vastly wealthy--that I was interested in.
Soooo, thought I would embark down the path of beer. First step to becoming a cicerone: Certified Beer Server--although, I wish they followed the sommelier school of thought and called it an Introductory Cicerone. Oh well, should be fun.
Might be even more fun if a few of us become certified beer servers and maybe even if a couple of us, a year from now, take the cicerone test!!!
Let me know your thoughts and/OR if you know of any neat and accredited online certifications via junior college (online) or online colleges.

@marklog Thanks! I might go become a notary for fun.
@connorbush what about a Dr of metaphysics?
@marklog That one was tempting. Very tempting.
Welp! I am a Certified Beer Server. A few days of studying (I already possessed beer enthusiast knowledge) and I passed!
I am now in this registry and am the 242,857 Certified Beer Server.
@connorbush Nice. I was thinking of becoming a KCBS Barbecue Judge (it's like an 8 hour class). I volunteered at Pork In The Park (The biggest KCBS sanctioned event east of the Mississippi). They had over 130 teams competing. They did not have enough judges so I was able to fill in at a VIP tent. So much fun - and good eats. Congrats on your CBS!
@mfladd Wowzer! That looks like an awesome certification to go for. Thank you for the contrats, now is the long and booze filled road to becoming a Cicerone.
@connorbush once you are certified you go on a list and can then ask to be a judge for local barbecue events. Here is the site if you are interested. http://www.kcbs.us/index.php
@mfladd I'll have to tell my retired father too. He is an avid bbq fan. Smokes meat, grills, makes jerky. I'm sure he'd love to judge. Thanks!
The silliest training I ever saw was a program to become a rabbit breeder. I think rabbits are pretty good at that on their own.
@KDemo Roger Rabbit agrees.
@mfladd
I'm a certified GWAPT, which is lengthy acronym that generally translates to "website hacker"

@MrGlass Okay, it sounds pretty legit: http://www.giac.org/certification/web-application-penetration-tester-gwapt

Update. I have applied for a slew of jobs in the craft beverage industry. Out of those, i have had two interviews and one offer (sales rep).
The salary was not suitable for my life--alas. They liked me so much though that even with turning that job down, they asked if I would be open to being on call staff for pouring and repping them at beer festivals!
I will get to maintain my full time job and once a month or so (more in the summer) work for this brewery. That is actually ideal. I will be able to learn more and more about the brewing world and add craft beer experience to my resume.
At the end of the interview, my Certified Beer Server certificate came into play and sealed the deal.
(They wanted me to start asap but I needed to be certified first... then I was all, BAM! ALREADY HAVE IT FOOL... actually, I was much more cordial than that)
