Maybe have one of the volmods edit the motherfucking topic title to
Carl’s slightly drunk and wants a mountain bike
That way you’ll bring in the right fuckhead expertise: the people who are drunk, the people who know about mountain bikes, The people who ride mountain bikes while drunk.
@f00l nah. that’d ruin the aesthetic of the thread title.
@carl669 @f00l We have aesthetics here?
@f00l @narfcake we fucking aesthetic the fuck out of it.
@carl669 @f00l Are you past the slightly part already, then?
@f00l @narfcake potentially. I taught the GF how to make dirty martinis and she’s too good at it
@carl669 @f00l Status updated.
@carl669 @narfcake
My aesthetic is drunk

My son says that’s not a good bike. We also haven’t finished putting his teeth back after REI overtightened his handlebars and they snapped driving his face into the ground.
@sammydog01 yikes!!! what’s he ride?
@carl669 Hook- I don’t think they make it anymore. We found a new service place.
NOOOOOOOOOO!! don’t change the title!!!
well… maybe it’s ok. I don’t know… I’m drink
@carl669 it wasn’t me!
@RiotDemon I blame @OnionSoup. or @narfcake
@OnionSoup wears socks with sandals.
@carl669 @narfcake @OnionSoup @RiotDemon
@narfcake is fucking drunk again? Damn.
Okay, now that I had a chance to take a quick look at the bike … I know that tariffs have hit hard, but the pricing gives me a pause. I might also be out of touch, so I’ll look deeper later tonight:
Drivetrain is alright, though the Altus is about the most basic level for Shimano’s mountain bike groupset. I’ll have to do some napkin math for the usable gear range.
Except for the longer travel, the front suspension fork doesn’t appear to be anything super special. I haven’t looked to see if it’s a tapered headset or not.
Good brakes, wheels, and tires.
As it is, nothing strikes me as being bad, but is it a great value, I don’t know yet. Look for an update later.
Well damn – comparisons might not make any sense anyway because of availability.
Historically, Diamondback bikes have been mid-pack in value – and something like their Line would compare well.
Except it’s completely out of stock.
I’m going to have to spend some more time on this, @carl669 …
@narfcake I’ve tried local shops as well and they all seem to be out of stock for the frame size I need.
@narfcake as far as front suspension, it’s a step up from their DRT 1.1, which had the XCM. sure, it’s a coil, but I don’t think I’ll get air shocks at this price point. at least not without a big trade off on something else.
I’m pretty sure it’s a tapered headset based on some reviews I found.
@carl669 @narfcake
There. Fucking FIFY.
@carl669 @narfcake The Line is part of the Hook, Line, and Sinker series- the Hook is the one that broke when my son was riding it. He thinks it was REI service’s fault. I still wouldn’t buy another one.
@OnionSoup totally did it.
@sammydog01 ahhh… i thought he had an REI bike that broke and went with a Hook instead.
Just to note, their bikes do go on sale occasionally.
@cinoclav yeah… they were on sale back in May, but I wasn’t drunk and looking for a bike then.
Fuck mountain bikes.
Fuck not being drunk.
Fuck fucking drunk on mountain bikes.
True fucking story.
@shahnm please fucking elaborate.
@carl669 Not my fucking story, but surely a true fucking story for some miserable fucker…
@shahnm I mean I’d be impressed by someone fucking on a mountain bike. Not sure I want to see it though
@carl669 Happy Friday! Dug this out of my tabs for you: (I also hear the show is rather good).
My son recommends the Trek Marlin 7. Personally I wouldn’t trust him but he does read a lot about mountain bikes.
@sammydog01
/giphy Mom truth antennae excelsior!
@sammydog01 i looked at that one as well. problem is that everyone seems to be out of stock. i’ll keep poking around though.
When you said you needed a particular frame size I don’t know if it’s a big size or a small size. If it’s tall, I have an underutilized specialized hardrock 29er that is more than sufficient for anything my neighborhood blacktop streets and nearby bike trails can throw at it. Everything on it seems to be very good quality.
The 29" wheels did take some getting used to. It felt sluggish to maneuver maybe, awkward at first compared to a 26". I guess 27.5" is a compromise for better maneuverability, which should be friendlier. When I got it I was just stoked about getting on a 29" so I was determined to do it.
I got all the throwing myself down mountains out of my system before I got it so I have no personal commentary on real off-road capability.
@djslack damn nice of you to offer, but i need a medium frame. and apparently a LOT of other people do as well. hence the issue with finding bikes in stock.
@carl669 if medium frames are in short supply, maybe bicycle stilts can become a thing. Wanna help me take on an untapped market?
@djslack i can barely walk around in normal shoes without hurting myself. pretty sure i’d die on bike stilts.
