Can we adopt a baseball team?
14So I was on vacation and stopped to see my sister in CT. We started talking about minor league baseball. She then told me about the Hartford YardGoats. I said “That name is awesome!” She just looked at me funny.
The team was actually named thru a voting contest.
“The New Britain Rock Cats announced at a Wednesday afternoon press conference at Wilson-Gray YMCA that the team will be renamed the Yard Goats when it moves to a new stadium in 13 months. Yard Goats was chosen from a final list of five, beating out Hedgehogs, Praying Mantis, River Hogs and Whirlybirds.”
Their mascots are Chompers and Chew-Chew.
And best of all is their jerseys which I told my sister I want for Xmas.
My favorite is the batting practice jersey.
Can’t we make them our team?

I suppose the Yard Goats are kind of cool… for a MiLB team… but you’d best not cheat on the Red Sox for MLB!
@jbartus Please. I am already cheating when I go to all the Delmarva Shorebirds games (Orioles affiliate). You go to what you have.
Btw, CT = New England. We be good.
@mfladd Shorebirds aren’t MLB though
@jbartus

Yes they are
@jml326 note the ‘I’ between the ‘M’ and ‘LB’
@jbartus they still are a mlb team. As compared to can independent leagues.
http://www.independentbaseball.net/teams/
@jml326 Yes, Independent Baseball is a separate beast, but Delmarva Shorebirds are not a MLB team. There is still a delineation between Major (MLB) and Minor (MiLB) leagues.
@jml326 while MiLB is related to the MLB it is a separate animal as @DrWorm noted. Sure there are more leagues that are independent, although one could argue that as it’s a standalone entity the Independent Baseball League is not technically speaking Minor League as in the context of its own operations it is the Major League. Technically speaking the only notable thing about the MLB is that it’s the largest and most notable baseball league, the same for the NFL, NHL, MLS, etc.
@mfladd in MLB one should root for Red Sox first O’s second whomever plays against Yankees third.
I just saw them in the program tonight- we went to a Flying Squirrel game, same league. We were playing the Akron Rubber Ducks.
@sammydog01 Rubber Ducks is such a cool team name! Do they have a giant Rubber Duck mascot?
@jbartus Apparently they have several rubbery mascots. I guess they don’t bring them on the road.
@sammydog01 Richmond Flying Squirrels is also a cool name. Love the mascot.
@sammydog01 I feel like they missed the opportunity to have fun honest to goodness classic rubber duck mascots. Like, they could be the Akron Rubber Ducks and have a bunch of themed duck mascots like ‘Sergeant Duck’ or ‘Doctor Duck’. The best part would be they could make a whole bunch of them but only need a handful of duck suits and then swap the shirts and stuff on and off of them. Would have been awesome.
@mfladd Neat mascot!
@mfladd And the Flying Squirrels beat the Rubber Ducks 6-2. It also turns out that our second baseman is often the gym leader at the Diamond Pokegym.
@jbartus Speaking of Akron, the University of Akron has a pretty cool name/mascot. They are the “Zips” and their mascot is a kangaroo.
I love minor league names and mascots. So much goofiness! And while the Goats jerseys are nice, I much prefer those caps. I may be making a purchase.
@pitamuffin When my kids played t-ball their team names were from the fun minor league teams. My favorite was the Lugnuts.
I’m liking the magnet…
@parodymandotcom That’s awesome!
I love the Yardgoats and Flying Squirrel names. Some of my other favorites:
Batvia Muckdogs
Savannah Bananas
Montgomery Biscuits
Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs
My ultimate favorite is still the Albuquerque Isotopes for the etymology of their nickname. In case you haven’t heard the story, there was an episode of “The Simpsons” where the owner of the Springfield team (the Isotopes) was threatening to move the team to Albuquerque. When the Calgary Cannons did move to Albuquerque , they jumped on the opportunity.
Love the Fresno Tacos logo. Also, I’ve been a fan of the Yard Goat logo for a while as well. Plus, bacon.
But, I can’t help but rep the local team. Big fan of the Roughriders hat with the Teddy logo. Plus, just a big fan of the Roughriders.
I want to be apart of the Chew Crew!
They played my local team, the Erie Seawolves recently and I meant to post. Our logo and mascot are ok but not as much fun as some of the others listed above.
@speediedelivery Yeah my local team has a name and logo that is not as much fun either. Delmarva Shorebirds…
@mfladd Last year we went to a game and the mascots included: Nutzy the flying squirrel, Parker the rally pig (an actual pig they ran around the bases in a cart), Captain RRRVA (a pirate), Victor the Viking, and Zinger the Acorn. The viking I don’t know why.
@speediedelivery Most boring mascot in the league- Harrisburg Senators. Am I right?
I miss the Crickets.
@2many2no You must mean Lubbock. I love that logo! I hope you have a hat at least.
@mfladd Oh yeah, I saved my hat and a couple of T’s. Those games were always a lot of fun. Plus you could enjoy the whole day for a $10 bill (everything was $2 – bleacher seats, drinks, dogs, even pitching balls at the radar.)
@2many2no Minor league rocks. It should be on everybody’s radar.
