Already set aside a time this evening with SWMBO to use the Vitamix to do just that. We’ll also make pico de gallo and chips and play some Buffett tunes. I think he would have liked that.
His music always played a large part of the soundtrack of my life, and my biggest regret [so far] is not having been able to get to see him live and in-person.
We did get to see him at a local drive-in’s simulcast of one of his concerts, but [like Taylor Swift fans] we were never able to get tickets despite many attempts.
@PhysAssist I saw him in person, totally by accident, a number of years ago when working on a tall ship in Key West. Several passengers had gone to his bar that night and said he was in town. The following morning as we were leaving he motored his sailboat up to us, tied up, and came on board. He sang us a short, private, songs by request concert using a crappy guitar we had on the ship and everyone talked with him while he was driving our schooner (it was under sail). It was hard to tell who had more fun - him steering our schooner or us that he was on board. Very down to earth. It was incredibly special. Who would have thought?
@Kidsandliz@PhysAssist
Yes, he definitely came across as the kind of guy that would be fun to have a beer with! His love of ships and planes was well known. I’m sure he had a blast captaining your schooner.
One of his last ventures was a series of retirement communities. I hope they will continue to maintain his legacy. Wishing you calm skies and good breezes. Sail on.
@Kidsandliz
Well, now I officially hate Hate HATE you!
Sorry, not really, I’m just terminally envious- starting with the nonchalant:
“when working on a tall ship in Key West”
progressing to
"He sang us a short, private, songs by request concert "
and culminating with
“everyone talked with him while he was driving our schooner…”
and then exacerbated by
“t was hard to tell who had more fun- him steering our schooner or us that he was on board. Very down to earth. It was incredibly special.”
FWIW, couldn’t you have just related what a stuck-up prig and total ass-hat he was, so I wouldn’t be as devastated as I am by the missed chances to have seen him that occurred?
No seriously, though, it’s good to learn that he really was the guy I always thought he was from his music and books.
BTW, if you haven’t had the pleasure, I totally recommend reading his books- the ones I liked best were a melange of him relating his life story, and fictional tales with some historical [from his experiences and acquaintances] fiction.
@PhysAssist I really didn’t know much about him at the time and so I had no preconceived notions. It is only after that I made an effort to listen to his music since I had liked what he had played for us.
@Kidsandliz@PhysAssist
Always stuck me as a good example striking a balance between the two protagonists in the Mexican fisherman parable.
He obviously loved what he did and did what he loved! The world is a much better place because of that…
@Kyeh
I shared it with my FIL long ago when I explained why I only worked 7on/70ff.
I tell people all the time, if I work more, I earn more, I buy more shit, and it has to be maintained… so, no thanks.
You’ve got that right!
He always said right from the beginning, when it stopped being fun, he’d stop playing music.
Here’s the earliest video of his that I could find, wherein he says just that:
@Kidsandliz@PhysAssist
Yeah how awesome would that have been!
You go out for a drink at a local bar and who sits in for the set… Jimmy Buffett! I really love that he decided to show up on a whim to support one of the coral reefer band guys. And because he was feeling well enough and had the desire to be out in front of people that he didn’t care about the venue size. Says a lot to me…
I’d buy that!
Good question!

Blendtecs, Ninja blenders, maybe a rare Vitamix. Sets of drinking vessels, ice holders and fancy ice cube trays.
Already set aside a time this evening with SWMBO to use the Vitamix to do just that. We’ll also make pico de gallo and chips and play some Buffett tunes. I think he would have liked that.

@chienfou
@chienfou Hmm, no cup holders. How do you carry your margarita with the walker?
(And what’s the max BAC allowed to operate it?)
@chienfou @macromeh I think that is what his wife is for.
Very sad to hear. I grew up on the boat, listening to his music with my father for years. I regret never seeing him in concert!
God Bless Jimmy!

Kenny Chesney sang in tribute to Jimmy’s passing this AM:

Again, God Bless you, Jimmy You will be missed!
[by me at the very least…]

I LOVE that parable.

@PhysAssist Here is his last informal appearance
@Kidsandliz Hi,
Can you send me that link privately, please?
Thanks,
@PhysAssist It has been removed by the person who uploaded it.
@Kidsandliz Oh, somehow I thought that was you…
Thanks anyway!
@PhysAssist I only wish I had been there.
