This link: http://emporiumpies.com/ was supposed to be in my post above - OMFG amazing pies - totally worth the two days of hell after I eat carbs. They ship UPS if you don't get to Dallas. Worth it.
Pie is better. You eat pie for all parts of the pie. Cake... the cake itself is just filler - an afterthought! And that's 90%+ of the cake. Ridiculous.
I said I could live without either, but then I saw @darksaber99999 talking crazy about pie. (Most pies are not worth eating for the crust.) My emphatic, "Wrong! That's just wrong!" reaction made me realize I had an opinion.
And then @tomvarela put the idea of carrot cake in my head. I'm suddenly feeling very emotional about the awesomeness of carrot cake. (I probably just need sleep.)
In any case... I gave the wrong answer. But at least I wasn't as wrong as all of those people who picked pie.
@christinewas You have clearly not had a terrific pie crust - light, flaky and buttery. A well made pie crust takes skill and a light hand. And there are easily as many truly badly made cakes out there as there are lousy pies.
@AnnaB Elise over at SimplyRecipes has a few EXCELLENT recipes for no-fail pie crust. One of my favorites is the all butter crust whirled up in a food processor. It can be made sweet or savory. SO good! And you carrot cake lovers...have you ever had a slice of Southern Hummingbird Cake? So many layers of deliciousness. My mom used to add grated carrots to the recipe so it became a sort of When Cakes Collide slice of heavenly goodness. I'm getting fat
@LaVikinga I'm about to leave for lunch here, and they have a dessert display case as you come in. They always have Hummingbird Cake; it's their signature. Well, and assorted cream pies, and sometimes chocolate cake. http://pengrees.com/
@OldCatLady Seriously? Pengree's? You are THAT close to me??? Well, I'll be damned. Was considering making a Farmers Market run tomorrow. Might have to waddle in and get a slice to go.
Frosted cake with pie filling! Chocolate bundt, chocolate frosting, with cherry pie filling in the middle. It was amazing what Betty Crocker and I used to come up with. Especially when my friends and I would sit around while "partying" and developed the munchies. Those were the days.
Had to answer Pie because I couldn't possibly agree with the Cake answer. When I make cake, I don't even put icing on it. Too sugary.
Pie is really good though. Though, I probably prefer Peach Cobbler to both Pie and Cake. Cobbler's probably close enough to Pie to be considered Pie though.
Savory is my jam. Meat pies, quiches ,etc etc. There's no equivalent in the cake world. simple. If we're talking strictly sweets, nothing better than chocolate flavored bread.
@brenda cake salé my dude. I'm a pie man through and through but find a good French joint that does a cake salé and you'll see the savory pie's opposite number.
Lemon freaking merengue, even if there were no other great pies out there (I'm looking at you pecan and pumpkin), this alone would garner my vote for pie.
@jaremelz My great aunt made the best "freaking" lemon meringue pie. Each year, she would visit her daughter in California and pick lemons from her daughter's tree and bring 'em back to Kansas and make pie for us for our Memorial Day festivities. Wonderful, wonderful pie.
@Barney Oh yes please. There's an Italian bakery in Seattle that was started before I was ever alive. They make the most amazing lemon merengue pie. I'll drive the 2 plus hours just to get a five dollar pie.
@Pavlov Used to live just a few blocks away and my now 14 year old has been going since he was a few days old. It had been awhile since he went, though, last time we went, Mama B took one look at that 6 foot little boy and wrapped herself around him in a hug. Then proceeded to give him and his brother more treats than they could ever eat. Places like that are almost non existent these days. And their panini, fuck yes..
Yo listen. If you hate cake its because the frosting is too sweet or the cakey part wasn't moist. Both of those are wrong! If you hate pie it's because the crust wasn't flakey or the filling was just too much. Both of those are wrong! Make either one right and they are tasty lik3. We can have peace.
@JoetatoChip I tend to dislike pie because most pies are fruit pies and fruit is generally too sweet for me even without an assload of additional sugar dumped in. Presumably that's what you mean by 'just too much', the pie version of the disgusting cake frosting?
This link: http://emporiumpies.com/ was supposed to be in my post above - OMFG amazing pies - totally worth the two days of hell after I eat carbs. They ship UPS if you don't get to Dallas. Worth it.
@Pavlov
@Pavlov I spent way too much time looking at those pies! I'll have to remember this place the next time I'm in Dallas.
Pie is better. You eat pie for all parts of the pie. Cake... the cake itself is just filler - an afterthought! And that's 90%+ of the cake. Ridiculous.
@darksaber99999 This makes no sense
@DaveInSoCal Cake is only good for the icing. The cake part is meh.
@darksaber99999 you've been eating the wrong cake, my friend.
@DaveInSoCal I agree with you.
Smith Island Cake
So Damn Delicious!
@darksaber99999 I'd take cake any day, if only it didn't have icing.
"What kind of pie?"
- Hubbell Gardiner
@AnnaB
Hubbell Gardner: . . . two cheese burgers and four cokes.
Katie Morosky Gardner: Onion?
Hubbell Gardner: Yeah, in the cokes.
Why is this an either/or question? Have none of you heathens sampled the joys of piecaken?
Yes, please!
I COULD live with either one. Not sure I'd want to, but that is a different question.
Pie over cake...unless it’s carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
If said cake were sold on meh...but maybe we don’t want to go there. Refurbished or remainder cake, plus the ship times.
@tomvarela Cake-in-a-jar!
http://deals.woot.com/questions/details/3f3a8017-5f1e-4687-ae51-db7e02051af7/have-you-seen-the-official-pemberducky-woot-cake-taste-testing
@narfcake Does this jar have a Lightning port, or just USB?
@tomvarela Neither. But the confetti can make your tooth blue.
(Somewhere on woot was another video on the making of it.)
@narfcake Oh Lord, that brings me back to my love of Shark Tank and Mr. Wonderful's constant boasting about Wicked Good Cupcakes.
(and your post had music from Cake too - awesome)
@narfcake can't find any vids but there was a fb foto album ... https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151058670363548.462426.278161243547
Depends on who is making it. Either one can be heaven or, well, not heaven.
http://shirt.woot.com/offers/cake-or-pi
http://shirt.woot.com/offers/cake-vs-pie
the answer is cake but don't sleep on chicken pot pie.
I said I could live without either, but then I saw @darksaber99999 talking crazy about pie. (Most pies are not worth eating for the crust.) My emphatic, "Wrong! That's just wrong!" reaction made me realize I had an opinion.

@christinewas You have clearly not had a terrific pie crust - light, flaky and buttery. A well made pie crust takes skill and a light hand. And there are easily as many truly badly made cakes out there as there are lousy pies.
@christinewas You probably just need carrot cake. Then sleep.
@christinewas - Agreed. I just eat the fruit filling and leave the crust. I'd gladly try @AnnaB's pie crust though.
@AnnaB Elise over at SimplyRecipes has a few EXCELLENT recipes for no-fail pie crust. One of my favorites is the all butter crust whirled up in a food processor. It can be made sweet or savory. SO good!

I'm getting fat
@christinewas Rarely do I come across a lackluster pie crust
@LaVikinga Hummingbird cake is delicious! Sounds great with the added carrots
Then there's Cheesecake, which is in a quantum state of cake-pie duality.
@Fish_Kungfu It's a custard, actually.
I think we can all agree both are even better with ice cream.
Umm cherpumple. Cherry, pumpkin, and apple pies baked into a 3 layer cake.
Frosted cake with pie filling! Chocolate bundt, chocolate frosting, with cherry pie filling in the middle. It was amazing what Betty Crocker and I used to come up with. Especially when my friends and I would sit around while "partying" and developed the munchies. Those were the days.
Anywho, I'm pro-Piecake. (Pake?)
@too33deep so a Boston Cream Pie (which is really a cake?)
@jmendenhall Boston Cream Pie is just a giant Êclair.
@too33deep You say that like it's a bad thing?
cookie
My wife and I had pie in lieu of cake at our wedding; it was a hit. Because half my wife's family was from the DC area, I went with Marion Berry.
@jmendenhall Us too! Fruit-filled mini tarts (tart-lets?) for everyone. YUMM
@kazriko Try making a cake with a French or Swiss Buttercream frosting. You can control the amount of sweetness. Gretchen has a nice Swiss version
Pumpkin Cake is good.... Pumpkin Pie is better.. start and end of all pie/cake related discussions
Picking cake over pie seems unAmerican. However, the right to do so...
Then there's cheesecake.
3.14 cakes
Savory is my jam. Meat pies, quiches ,etc etc. There's no equivalent in the cake world. simple. If we're talking strictly sweets, nothing better than chocolate flavored bread.
@brenda cake salé my dude. I'm a pie man through and through but find a good French joint that does a cake salé and you'll see the savory pie's opposite number.

@jaremelz Borracchini's is heaven on Earth.
@Pavlov Used to live just a few blocks away and my now 14 year old has been going since he was a few days old. @brhfl Have you tried rhubarb pie, with less sugar than most people put in?
@jqubed
Fact: If the quote was, "Let them eat pie," everyone would have been happy.
Pie FTW!
I haven't had a birthday cake in years. I have pumpkin pie or coconut cream pie instead.
My Grandpa always used to say that he had 2 favorite kinds of pie... Hot pie & cold pie.
@mediobarkre How about hot pie with ice cream on top?
@sammydog01 I pretty sure he filed that under "hot pie". And was likely his favorite in that category.
Hot peach pie a la mode is very high on my list (way above cake).
@mediobarkre My daughter made a blueberry pie yesterday. We put vanilla ice cream on it. Daughters are good.
Raised in the South, so I have to vote cobbler. It's the One True Dessert here.
@BethanyAnne cobbler is neither cake nor pie...
@thismyusername Yeah, shoe cake or shoe pie? No thanks.
@BethanyAnne Mmmm, fresh peach cobbler. Can't wait until July.
@thismyusername Well, if I had to choose between cake or pie, I'd go with custard pie, aka cheesecake.
@BethanyAnne Huh, I would think of pecan pie or banana pudding as our true dessert in my part of the South.
I used to tease one of my best friends about making me a piecaken. She never did, but I still kept after her.
Well, on my birthday back in 2012, my husband made me a piecaken. He made the cake (using pie pans) and bought the pie at the grocery store.
It was really, really sweet and we didn't finish it. But wasn't that a nice thing to do?
@lisaviolet It was sweet in more ways than one. So he does recognize SOME special days.
@hallmike Well, yeah, I guess.
don't you mean cake or death?
