@cengland0 - This is indicative of the avant-garde bullshit that is all the rage right now with the
Worst.
Generation.
Ever.
And I'm forced to include tripe such as this in my curriculum next semester at the KCAI. If you're under 25, you probably love this. If you're old enough to have experienced your first drop in your car insurance premium and you've been dropped of your parent's health care plan, it is most probably like fingernails on a chalkboard.
I'm sitting here and I'm not sure what to think... It's like my brain is refusing to process what I just watched. "WTF was that?" is my most coherent thought.
I'm 26. I'm going to have to ask my 22-year-old sister her opinion. Maybe then have her spread it around to test your theory.
@Pavlov It's going to be a very limited sample group. If I get enough responses I'll post them here. I don't need anything shiny... Curiosity being satisified has always been the biggest payoff for me.
After What Does the Fox Say? and Chick Chick you hadda kinda know this was comin'. Besides, everythin's better with 4:20 on it. If you don't think so, you need to Start Wearing Purple.
I'm not posting the links, 'cause we've all been shocked & awed before. (Undoubtedly, some one will.)
My take on this emerging genre is that it is geared towards the "what do we produce for the Yo Gabba Gabba Kids now that they've grown up".
As I said, I have mixed feelings. I loved it the first couple times through in a acid throwback Stones kind of way and then I just couldn't stand it . . . But I'm a damn harsh critic and I tend to over-think modern digital cinema.
Plus, I know what I like - and that varies between sober and not sober - and that can vary thrice daily.
Somewhere there is a lesson plan here - if I get lucky I could drag it out a week.
Who knows, I may wake up in the morning and love it again.
@Pavlov Ironically (I guess?) the post I was going to write never even got as long as the one I made, but had I finished it it probably would've been. Mostly just that absurd media tends to seem unique and new, but it's really just new takes on an old "genre" I guess you could say. Maybe a good example would be how Jackass seemed to fit a new mold, but one could argue that at its core was something that Buster Keaton was doing back in the 20s (crazy death-defying stunts, though the public and painful nature of Jackass was certainly new)
Ehh. I feel like it's just trying waaay too hard to be Tim And Eric-style ironic-absurdist totes surrealism cool. This would have been a lot edgier in 2007. Still super try hard, like it was made by xavier renegade angel folk, but perhaps not quite as blandly derivative. Conclusion: 2/10, would not bang.
@Headly I think it speaks more to the demographic of the specific curator at Vimeo.
The sexual innuendo wasn't lost on me . . . no one has mentioned it yet. Needless to say, this video has nothing to do with the cookies enjoyed by children.
That aspect (the innuendo) is what intrigues me most - the mixing of the specific visual style with lyrics as such and the prevalence thereof . . . That in and of itself isn't new - it is the progression / adoption rate that interests me, and if it is a result of the market driving the imagery or the developmental influences of the producer / producer's generation.
Again, I'm over-thinking it. @Moose hit on some of it - but didn't overtly make the connection (for the casual reader).
@Pavlov I have some initial feed back regarding the relationship between age and whether or not the video was... enjoyed. Added genders, too.
1) Female, 63, No 2) Male, 25, No 3) Female, 25, No 4) Male, 28, Yes 5) Female, 26, No 6) Female, 24, No 7) Male, 25, Yes 8) Female, 32, No
Working on getting people away from the 24-26 zone. My sister hasn't gotten back to me.
Some of the additional comments were great: "I like Cookie Monster better." "What happened to the dancers with no hands? That's horrifying." "While the vaginal rainbows NEARLY persuaded me, I have to say I'm not a fan." "The music was kind of dull but I liked the trippy/bizarre video." "Despite all sane inclinations...yes, I lolled." "This was scary."
For a similar style of video that's pretty old by now: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/badgers (Keep watching- it does change things up) I read before that some people actually watched it for such a long time that they noticed one version actually went out of sync.
Sorry, couldn't handle watching more than 20 seconds of that horrible video.

But, they got paid.
@Pavlov I'm old enough to qualify for the senior racketball league and I absolutely hated it.
@Pavlov all generations have crap:
@cleverogre I had no idea Charles Nelson Reilly did anything other than Match Game! Never heard of Lidsville before today.
@cleverogre Lidsville was a blast . . .
@Pavlov Did someone say COOKIE!?!?!
@Headly Vacant Manifesto's Youtube page is linked below (they did the Jay Z rip)
https://www.youtube.com/user/VacantManifesto
The commercial they did for Rojo was hilarious.

@primrosewater I'd be interested in any empirical data you might have to share and I'll send you something shiny for your troubles.
@Pavlov It's going to be a very limited sample group. If I get enough responses I'll post them here. I don't need anything shiny... Curiosity being satisified has always been the biggest payoff for me.
I am now dumber for having watched that.
Aw, c'mon.

@Pavlov Too much CatDog.
I had a much longer post prepared, comparing things like Elvis Lives in Flash, You're the man now dog, All your base, The Bum Bum song, and Too Many Cooks to "La Trahison des images", "Fountain", "Un Chien Andalou", "Mighty Mouse" as performed by Andy Kaufman, and one other that I forgot, but it was long-winded and lame. The whole point is culture is stupid and changes a lot, and the only culture that matters is popular culture. That said, I thought the video was super dumb, but I also never like dubstep so what do I know.
@Moose You just wasted an hour of my life. I hope you're happy.
@Moose I'm interested to read the longer post . . .

Wow is that BAD.
I'm wondering where/how you found that....Is it for kids?
It helps if you're in Colorado when you watch this....it helps with the munchies...
So now we know the demographics at Vimeo?
Actually not that different from a lot of crap by some mainstream "artists" Definitely not in 7/8 time...

@primrosewater Thank you. I lolled too . . . do let me know if your sister gets back to you. Much appreciated.
@primrosewater Male, 47: Meh.
@Pavlov Female, 34, No ..... Female, 8, No .... Male, 26, No ..... Female, 25, No --------- I won't reply again uness I get some more younger people.
@primrosewater @Pavlov man, how did I miss the vaginal rainbows?
@JonT I missed them the first time, too. They kind of blend into the background.
