All the above. Also Zhen Jiang vinegar, seasoned rice vinegar, white wine vinegar, Champagne vinegar, malt vinegar, and whatever else is hiding in the pantry.
@edguyver14 I agree - these are my favorites for things like potato salad or dressing for a salad that has fruit added; anything where I want a mild acidity.
All the ones mentioned are good in the appropriate dishes, since they have subtle flavor differences.
I don’t think any of the ones listed are that good at catching flies, though.
@Kyeh yes! We are dealing with that right now! I HATE fruit flies!
We make these little traps with water bottles and a paper cone (this pic isn’t mine, but we make them about the same way) and a little apple cider vinegar with mother (why is it called mother? It sounds silly, lol!) I put a few drops on a paper towel and put that in the bottle. It works just as well and doesn’t waste too much vinegar or make a mess if it’s knocked over.
@k4evryng “with mother”? I’ve never heard of that - what does it mean?
Mine is actual vinegar and fruit but I leave it for a long time so the vinegar gets pretty concentrated. I’ve never tried just the paper towel. Maybe next time. The flies are persistent little pests for sure!
@Kyeh I think it just means unfiltered, but it just sounds weird, lol! If you look at the pictures of the gummy vitamins, it says “with the mother” in small print.
From Google:
What is Apple Cider Vinegar with “Mother”?
The unfiltered and unrefined vinegar with cloudy and murky appearance is called apple cider vinegar with “mother”. It is used for drinking purposes and has many health benefits due to the presence of beneficial bacteria, yeast and protein.
@k4evryng Okay, I looked it up and saw “the mother” is like the scoby for kombucha or starter for sour dough - got it. (I hate kombucha - it’s very faddish around here but yuck, it actually messed up my digestion when I tried it!)
@Kyeh Kombucha is basically tea gone rotten. It’s vile as far as I’m concerned. Back in the '80s, when fast-food places outside the South finally started making actual iced tea instead of peddling that instant or concentrate crap, outlets that didn’t thoroughly clean their dispenser often ended up with tea that was more of a culture than a brew. Ick.
I like all those acids.

The best vinegar is the vinegar that you actually have when you need it.
@werehatrack Bingo!

Pomegranate vinegar
@heartny interesting
@tinamarie1974 Trader Joe’s
I like several of them, especially the balsamic for salads. But I clean my coffee maker and similar items with plain apple cider vinegar.

@phendrick Apple cider vinegar + some cut up overripe fruit + a little dish soap in a bottle is great for catching fruit flies.

Sorry the picture is so big…

Purely situational so I’ll mention one I havent seen on here yet. Malt vinegar is excellent on some fish 'n chips…Yum!
All of the above.
Pickle Juice.
@infornography Pickle juice is awe-some! There is a local pickle factory that sells it by the gallon.
