@fuzzmanmatt well I only use Alexa for is as a “Alarm Clock” as that is what is in my bed room But Siri is everywhere else, even controls the the Phillip Hue!
@NapkinEater Smart. I helped my buddy with a similar setup so he could monitor and shut down his CNC router as it cuts out parts and bodies for guitars. We put a camera out in his workshop and plugged the router in to a smart receptacle. Some operations take hours to complete and now he can watch a movie or the game while keeping an eye on n the CNC .
I wish I had smart lights / switches for the living room ceiling lights for when the kids were smaller. When we’d cuddle up on the couch and they would fall asleep. I could have remotely turned off the lights while nap-trapped.
Nowadays they rarely nap. But it would still be nice to remotely control the switches because I still like my naps Alas, my ceiling lights remain dumb.
My whole house is set up with smart switches and receptacles, including the power window blinds. I have some close with the sunrise to keep it cooler in the house. They then open again once the sun is not shining directly into the house. The lights are similarly set up to come on with the sunset.
@accelerator I have a variation of your set up. Don’t have smart blinds because I live in an 100yr + old wood house with custom size windows. That being said we have a ritual of opening and closing the drapes, this way we control summer heat and winter cold. We have voice controlled lights and outlets. No smart switches because the handicapped resident can just ask “AL” to turn thing on or off without using an app. We use an app when away from the house to control the lights. Freaked out our collage aged kid who didn’t tell us he was coming home for the holiday break. Christmas tree, house decorations & porch decor just went on by itself! I got a PHONE CALL!
Install in the new house next door. Turn them on and off randomly, especially at night, to convince the new owners it is haunted, and buy it off their them for cheap.
I can navigate my whole house in the dark. I don’t need lights on when I get home. Coupled with the fact that I work from home and so I never really leave my house anyway.
To turn off smart switches.
“Alexa, goodnight.”
And then I knew that every light in the house was off.

I have my 3d printer plugged into a smart outlet and monitor it with a wifi camera. That way, if something goes haywire I can stop it remotely.

Great to mess with whoever is in the house when you are not.
@edguyver14 I love it! I approve!
Door stops. I like my lights dumb.
@Tadlem43 So you prefer dim bulbs?
@macromeh @Tadlem43 There’s a bright idea.

@LaserEyes
Well, now’s your chance…
Turn off the lights when you hear your wife walking down the stairs
@tweezak

Good insurance policy?
Turn on the margarita blender

To turn off all the lights when the kids are “sneaking” around downstairs…
turn off the workshed and patio lights after you got in bed and saw the outside lights still on.
Turn off the light without having to cross the entire room to flip the switch.
I still prefer this

Mostly because a few devices are high-power draw (cooker, A/C, etc.) and won’t work with a smart switch (and don’t have internal timer/schedulers).
There are other caveats – bluetooth is unreliable in my experience, especially if you’re going to be saturated in signals (making neither smart switches or push-bots viable). Also, for these devices, they may need a separate hub connected to your smarthome hub.
