@thebigtverberg eh, they activate most of the same processing parts of the brain, so I don’t consider them a cheat. That said, I do tend to read more than listen.
@thebigtverberg I don’t normally listen in bed, unless I am SUPER wrapped up, but I have headphones/ear buds in 80% of the time with an audiobook going…
@wifeduck@simplersimon
What have ya’ll been listening to/reading? I’ve been really getting into LitRpg books while waiting for Sanderson to write another massive novel. Also enjoying the book Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari…I try to sneak in a bit of knowledge between fantasy books
Well, I can’t speak for others, but I prefer to read when there is enough light to see. This leaves out reading in the dark, deep under water like at the bottom of the ocean, dungeons, sewers, in the middle of the desert on a moonless night, going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, and most mushroom houses and many other places where neither the sun nor light shines. Even then with sufficient light, I am not fond of reading while being shot at, in free fall with or without a parachute or safety net, while free climbing a sheer cliff wall, or in the middle of a forest fire to name but a few.
@AuntMean67 Free fall can be experienced safely without a parachute, albeit briefly, viz., a) jumping on a trampoline, or b) in my case flying a parabolic arc in my airplane.
In both cases, however one experiences a few g’s when a) hitting the trampoline, or b) pulling out of the dive.
In no case, however, was I ever reading at the time, which in the case of the airplane, doesn’t count watching the vertical speed indicator, the altimeter, and the airspeed.
One is advised not to try this with passengers, who likely will lose their cookies and mess up the cabin, sick sack or no sick sack, though if it has to be done, the sick sack choice is preferred.
While eating by myself in a bar or restaurant.
Read on a Kindle that is easy to change the page with a free knuckle, even when eating something messy like fried chicken or ribs.
All the time
@simplersimon
Exactly!!!
@simplersimon Any time.
You just assume I can read?
@hchavers
/8ball can @hchavers read
Very doubtful
Whenever I am in the mood.
Audiobooks feel like cheating…but I like to listen before bed, and at work during those easier days when I don’t need my whole brain.

Before you sign the contract.

@Jackinga how did you survive the free fall without a parachute? Were you jumping out of a ground floor window?

On the beach. Or on a deck at the beach.
During dialysis
While laying in the sun, although I’m white as a ghost this year.
Used to be all the time, but now there is no time, so the best time to read is when I’m supposed to be doing another thing.
biggest reason I hate driving and can’t wait to move from texas to new york is being able to use commute time for reading
or teslas actually become self driving
