Video Game: Fire Emblem Series
Board Game: Kingdom Death: Monster
Pen and Paper: I lean toward Dungeons and Dragons (4th or 5th editions - not needlessly overcomplicated like the previous editions and more accessible so more people are playing it)
@eilaer Come on. Who doesn’t love digging through three reference books and an issue of Dragon magazine to figure out if a Dwarf thief attacking with a Wand Of Fireballs does double damage to an Ice Dragon even though it is -10 degrees in the middle of a non-magical snow storm?
If you mean modern military tactical (which is the assumption here), then fuck yeah Metal Gear Solid.
But my favorite “tactics” game will always be Final Fantasy Tactics. Great story, and one of the darker, grittier, and more mature stories compared to the rest of the Final Fantasy series.
Are all of those video games? (I have heard of Call of Duty and Rainbow Six sounds vaguely familiar). If so, I think the poll should have explicitly said “Best tactical video game”. The notion that “best game” has to be a video game is an odd assumption for a significant portion of the population.
There’s an indie video game called Into the Breach that’s kind of a chess-like puzzle game. I find it hard enough, though I remember reading somebody complaining that it was only as difficult as a 1500(?) level chess player.
You could call that tactical. It’s sorta military themed. You have to drive back the space aliens without destroying the buildings. Turn based, take all the time to think that you want.
It’s a great game by the same developers who made FTL (another great game).
Stratego
Risk! The original and still the best.
Chess? Wolfenstein?

@eilaer @mml666 Also, do you add the racial bonus when sneak attacking with a ranged magical weapon? Where’s the errata on that…
@eilaer @themutilator Our DM didn’t play with racial bonuses…
Fish
Chutes and Ladders, hands down.

Doom II: Hell on Earth, obviously. The United States Marine Corps used it for training exercises, how can you argue with that?
@brennyn Aye. I was thinking probably ARMA or something.
Relationships
@cinoclav Ah, a Fire Emblem player.
Day of Defeat.

@DrWorm ergo… something else…
How are those games tactical? I guess I’ve heard of team coordination in Rainbow Six…
Isn’t Metal Gear Solid gameplay all about sitting in a cardboard box…
Gears of War is that third person game with the chainsaw sword that’s powered off manly yelling.
Starcraft, Warcraft, Command and Conquer…
@PocketBrain RTS FTW
Monopoly. Which other game ends with the board being flipped and strong family bonds being broken?

@InnocuousFarmer I’ll check that out, thanks!
Tic-tac-toe
“The only winning move is not to play.”
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
The X-Com series
@thismyusername where are the two ducks?
@chienfou
@thismyusername not sure how tactical ‘Duck-Duck-Goose’ is but… whatever.
@chienfou
@thismyusername oh…

Hitman!!!
X-com was pretty great
Do I have to wear today’s jacket to play?
Anyone play Assassin?
(Unfortunately, I was already out of college before it became popular.)
Paintball at a good field.
