One of Chuck Hoberman's best-known museum pieces, the original Hoberman Sphere was installed in 1992 as the central exhibit in the Liberty Science Center's atrium. The sphere was re-installed in 2007 in the newly renovated museum's entry hall. Suspended by cables, the 700-pound aluminum sphere expands and contracts smoothly and continuously. Throughout its long history, the sphere has become the icon for Liberty Science Center, logging millions of cycles.
Shit, I only voted Bathysphere because I missed Escher's sphere. And because, as @Jarf noted, Labyrinth-Bowie's sphere was oddly absent. You know, Labyrinth wasn't made in modern times with our fancy 3D printing and acrylics galore… that shit was legit. glass.
I was there for this concert on the mall, and it was… I don't really like going to concerts, but this just felt like an unbelievable melding of spirits… it was a good experience because it was a social experience.
It was also a good experience because The Flaming Lips shot confetti all over the mall and told the audience we had to pick it up because the feds said they couldn't make a mess.
I worked as lead scenic artist for the medals stage @ the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The curtain for the stage was a 1/2-Hoberman sphere that opened and closed like a camera lens albeit with the Hoberman structure, It was amazing, and I was honored to meet Chuck Hoberman who gave me a little sphere keychain which I still have.

So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to sphere is sphere itself.
