@2many2no damn, i always miss one on my “exception to the horrible, horrible rule of xmas music” list. good catch. it doesn’t fit the poll, true, but i assumed this thread would include General Xmas Music That Doesn’t Suck so, i’m still happy to see it
I’ll give you two. A funny one: Merry Christmas From the Family (funny and yet full of heart) by Montgomery Gently. A serious one: White Wine in the Sun (may make you fairly somber) by Tim Minchin. Videos below.
Side note, if you like White Wine in the Sun, and you purchase a copy of it on iTunes, the money will be donated to the Australian charity for Autism. He does this for all purchases in Nov, Dec, and Jan for the past 6 years.
I had to check but David Bowie-Bing Crosby Little Drummer Boy was released 1982 although recorded a few years earlier. Dave Matthews Christmas Song if you actually want a “modern” Christmas song. Also really like Sufjan Stevens Sister Winter which most likely have not heard.
I don’t really like Christmas music, but I have to go with “All I Want for Christmas”. It’s just perfect. This is an interesting video about it. Also interesting to me: the 2nd most streamed Christmas song in 2015 was “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”, which is hot, steaming garbage.
@jrwofuga yes!!! This is the one I was going to post. One year in Wal-Mart, they accidentally played the not safe for public version. Hearing the F word said so loudly with all those oblivious ppl was hilarious.
True story. I was working at a restaurant in Dublin, Ireland in 2000 as a waiter. Top tourist spot in town. About once a week, this real old looking guy would wander by the windows while we would be closing. One night, he brushed by me and garbled “excuse me”, obviously drunk. The girl I was closing with told me it was Shane McGowan, lead singer of The Pogues. Turned out he was living in a hotel in downtown Dublin because he had run up an incredible tab there and they wouldn’t let him check out before he paid the bill. Time had not been kind to him.
Almost anything from Mannheim Steamroller. There are simply too many to list…though my list would include ‘Hark! The Herald Trumpets (Angels) Sing’, ‘Deck the Halls’, ‘Faeries’, and ‘Carol of the Bells’.
@PooltoyWolf I prefer the original Christmas and Fresh Aire Christmas to the newer albums, but agree. Also, the first Narada Christmas album was wonderful (the second had nice arrangements but just didn’t reach the same level).
ANYTHING but Bruce singing “Santa Claus is coming to town”. I actually try to see how far I can go into the season before I hear it. I have not escaped it yet.
How can one vote for a Christmas song with improper grammar in the title??? I Wish It Was Christmas Today by Julian Casablancas. Julian ! It’s WERE - I wish it were Christmas. Mrs. Raad, your 8th grade English teacher.
I’ve always liked Charlie Brown Christmas the best:
My wife and I talked last year how both our moms always listened to Amy Grant’s “Home for Christmas” every December for at least the ten more years til we moved out. So we started listening to it ironically for nostalgia’s sake. I think it stopped being ironic when we knew all the words. I should add neither of us is religious.
@evbarnstormer recently at an after party i decided to “jokingly” play an amy grant song amid our other 90s favorites…but it turned out i’m not the only atheist that grew up loving that cassette tape! we all knew the words
A few years ago, Ronnie James Dio & Toni Iommi from Black Sabbath did a metal version of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” that really hit me!! Just love it & look forward to pulling it out this time of year! Check it out if you’re interested…
although i loathe 99% of xmas music, this poll contains two favorites: mariah carey & the waitresses, but i had to go with the waitresses, just by an inch.
i also like the charlie brown christmas soundtrack, as well as “merry christmas (i don’t want to fight tonight)” by the ramones.
You didn’t specify whether it had to be written since the '80s, or just recorded. So since most Christmas music drives me up the damn wall, I’m going to go with a technicality:
I’ve never seen/heard it called Christmas in the Hollis, but now that I have I’m disappointed they never made Deck The Hollis.
Christmas time in the LBC by Snoop and friends.
@spitfire6006006 You have good taste.
@2many2no excellent choice, but they specified 80’s or newer, and it was 78.
@2many2no I think this one misses the “modern” (1980s or newer) designation. (sorry… must type faster)

@jerk_nugget we don’t need no stinkin’ rules!
I Want an Alien for Christmas - Fountains of Wayne.
/youtube The Vandals Thanks for Nothing
Best Christmas song is the one I never have to hear.
Bah humbug.
Sufjan something something
@Unicorn_King Sister Winter?
@Unicorn_King Obviously Christmas Unicorn.
/youtube Christmas Unicorn
All of the above! Both fantastic options from him. I’d say around 25% of his Christmas songs are solid gold.
Wasn’t seeing Christmas in Hollis at first, and was going to be disappointed.

@CZug Good, I didn’t have to post it.
Also, his second best Christmas song (extra gory version):
/youtube The Night Santa Went Crazy
@CZug @Tin_Foil For the love of God! Thanks for remimding me that constant Xmas songs in stores will continue through 12/31/18

I am very partial to Simon Viklund’s takes on the old, classic theme:
I’ve, uh, been somewhat of a bad boy this year.
Trans Siberian Orchestra Carol of the Bells
What Child is This, Black Lab
/youtube twisted sister have yourself a merry little Christmas
Dropkick Murphys, of course.
Edit: Why can’t I inline this bitch?
Video won’t post.
@G1 damn you beat me! by just eleven hours…
Tim Timebomb & Friends

@PooltoyWolf YES! Most any of their albums.
And they sound so much better when played on my ‘home music system’…
@daveinwarsh Quite. Here’s mine
Little Drummer Boy by Pentonix
Christmas at Ground Zero by Weird Al.
Christmas Wrapping IS my favorite Christmas song.
/youtube all I want for Christmas is a real good tan
@llangley by Kenny Chesney. Also love the Montgomery Gentry one mentioned above
Merry Christmas From The Family by Robert Earl Keen
ANYTHING but Bruce singing “Santa Claus is coming to town”. I actually try to see how far I can go into the season before I hear it. I have not escaped it yet.
@Oldelvis 100% Correct! That is one version of the song that should be destroyed…NEVER to be heard again!!

i also like the charlie brown christmas soundtrack, as well as “merry christmas (i don’t want to fight tonight)” by the ramones.
and the final favorite:
My two favorites are Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas Eve in Sarajevo and Jethro Tull’s Another Christmas song. Too different to choose between.
And for fun my favorite is Bob Rivers’ I am Santa Claus.
Tom Waits & Peter Murphy
You didn’t specify whether it had to be written since the '80s, or just recorded. So since most Christmas music drives me up the damn wall, I’m going to go with a technicality:
Achtung X-Mas is still great, novelty song or not. But this one is more Christmas-y and one of my favorites:
Merry Christmas from Chiron Beta Prime!
Blue Xmas (To Whom It May Concern)
Not modern, but deserves recognition in the cynical seasonal song category.
Mistletoe & Holly
Also not new, I am surprised to learn that Sinatra did it first.
However, Donny Dempster has to be #1:
Runner-up -
How about ‘modern’ covers of everyone’s favorite songs?
Whew… This kid can sing!
Uhhh… So christmasy… kind of…
Another fav.
@Fen_Star: A Bob Rivers Christmas:
Do they know it’s Christmas, Band-Aid, 1984. It is not Christmas until I hear George Michael and Bono
Nutmeg - John Legend & Stephen Colbert
Somewhat popularized by No Doubt.
I scrolled through this long list on my phone and don’t think I saw this one. One of the favorites of the shahnm household…
/youtube BNL God rest ye merry gentlemen
Does no one else remember Jingle Cats???

Changed my mind. Merry Christmas to those who can’t be home so we can be!

All those choices suck no wonder society is so fucked up today.
@cranky1950 someone sure is cranky.
A new take on an old classic - “Walkin’ Around in Women’s Underwear”
