@Kyeh@PooltoyWolf@yakkoTDI I haven’t had any in ages, but you never forget that favor/texture. My father introduced us kids to the inexplicably pastel orange delicacy that is the circus peanut.
@PooltoyWolf I guess you’re out of luck in the sharing department so far. But don’t worry, I’m sure there are plenty of haters that’ll pop up to ridicule us soon & would be glad to throw some at…er, share some with…us, so hang in there!
@Kyeh@yakkoTDI I’m almost the opposite! I LOVE how they taste, but I can only eat so many of them in one sitting. Much like the oft-maligned candy corn…
@yakkoTDI I was given a “circus peanut” once. That was enough. I had forgotten that they had the banana nature, but I remembered to avoid them nevertheless.
@Kyeh@Lynnerizer I’m the same way with lemon, i think I’m too much of a wuss with tartness & need something to mellow it out a little. I don’t love it in hot/savory dishes, either, but give me ALL the lemon desserts you can come up with.
@ircon96@Kyeh@Lynnerizer Flashback unlocked!! Cherry lemonade from Steak N Shake 2 blocks from the bicycle shop that started my journey. So delicious and before I discovered how bad sugar is.
@ircon96@Lynnerizer Oh, there IS one lemon candy that I can’t get enough of - it’s Italian turrone nougat (which I think actually has real lemon flavor, not artificial.) But the lemon in it is mellow, not sharp, and delicious!
@ircon96@Kyeh@yakkoTDI
I was going to mention that before, your bicycling journey sounds great! I wish I had been able to keep up with cycling, it was so much fun and such a great way to see things while being adventurous and living a healthy lifestyle!
@yakkoTDI Mmm, Cherry & lemon sound great together! I love lemon mixed with other flavors, it brightens everything up, like Arnold Palmers, for example. I make my own version with Crystal Light cuz their lemon iced tea doesn’t have nearly enough lemon & their plain iced tea is insipid, at best.
@Kyeh Awww! You’re too generous! And you read my mind–i was going to suggest the Mr & Mrs Sprat approach myself w/@Lynnerizer, so we’re on the same wavelength! Lol
@ircon96@Lynnerizer@yakkoTDI I was browsing the Safeway app yesterday and it looks like they’re doing a Lemon Fest right now! In addition to the lemon madeleines, they also have:
•Lemon pepper cashews
•Lemon potato chips
•Lemon blossom ice cream sandwiches
•Prickly Pear & Lemon sparkling water
I especially want to try that sparkling water because prickly pear is another favorite flavor of mine!
@ircon96@Lynnerizer@yakkoTDI It actually snowed here for a little while today, though none of it stuck - doesn’t seem very summery yet! But in a week or two it might - you never know around here.
@Kyeh@Lynnerizer@yakkoTDI Same here–we’ve had just about every kind of precipitation recently, so I’m just trying to manifest it, as the kids say these days.
@ircon96@Lynnerizer@yakkoTDI Our local weather guys LOVE the word, that’s the only reason I know it! They look like Dippin Dots to me!
/image Dippin Dots
@Lynnerizer In my admittedly limited experience, you haven’t missed anything. Calling them a gimmick might be overly generous; the flavor level in the ones I’ve had was below par by comparison to even such mediocre brands as Great Value, and might not even be up to Parade. (Or maybe the ones I had were counterfeit; it was quite a while back, and I vaguely recall a minor scandal involving such an issue.)
@werehatrack Good to know. I just placed an order from Walmart and I thought about checking them out. Apparently it was a fleeting thought, I ended up with a bunch of fresh fruit instead.
@ircon96@Lynnerizer@yakkoTDI I had them at a baseball game once - they were okay but not really memorable. I think they’re something kids probably like a lot. They mught be fun in an ice cream float!
@ircon96@Kyeh@yakkoTDI
I might be totally wrong but I thought there was a brick and mortar store (don’t remember the name) that specifically was all about the Dots? I think I’m thinking about something I saw on Shark Tank…
@ircon96@Kyeh@yakkoTDI
I found them online and they have everything you need to know about what flavors, recipes, their events with food trucks and online purchases. They sell single serve size and in bulk. But you can’t store it in your home freezer because it’s got to be kept at -40°. Here’s the link if anyone is interested. https://www.dippindots.com/all/
@craigthom@lisagd The Cavendish monoculture has served the fruit industry well for 70+ years; that’s hardly a massive failure. OTOH, the efforts to breed a replacement ought to have been in full swing in the 1970s, but as long as the Cavendish remained viable, there wasn’t a lot of funding for a program to find a replacement, particularly since the next blight hadn’t yet been identified. Now that the new fungus has appeared, they know what to breed resistance for, assuming the new bug isn’t more generalized than the old one was.
@visioneer_one I dislike the Cavendish for personal history reasons, but I’ve had a couple of other excellent varieties in my travels, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much better they were. I suspect that your local one would be a welcome addition to my short list; it’s a shame they aren’t commercially useful. Or maybe it isn’t a shame at all for you; they’ll remain a local specialty and thereby unlikely to fall victim to a superblight. In any event, I’m mildly envious.
I always thought I didn’t like limes because I grew up eating Life Savers and other artificially flavored candy. It turns out that limes are much better in person.
@user27549550 Funny, I’m the exact opposite, i haven’t found anything watermelon that i liked except the real thing, but give me everything cherry all day.
@ircon96 Except cough syrup. I don’t think there’s any artificial flavoring agent that can make dextromethorphan be anything but vile. (And the horror that is guaifenesin syrup should be listed as a violation of the Geneva accords.)
Grape… As I mentioned in the “discuss today’s deal” thread, scents and tastes can be strongly linked to memories. One whiff or taste of artificial grape flavoring, and I am transported to 1973, making out with Kathy (my pretty high school girlfriend who always wore grape lip gloss!)
Bananananananananana!!!
@yakkoTDI The important thing is knowing when to stop spelling it.
Banana! Give me ALL of your circus peanuts.
@PooltoyWolf I do love those things!
@Kyeh @PooltoyWolf I have a love/hate relationship with Circus Peanuts. They never taste great to me but I can’t stop eating them.
@Kyeh @PooltoyWolf @yakkoTDI I haven’t had any in ages, but you never forget that favor/texture. My father introduced us kids to the inexplicably pastel orange delicacy that is the circus peanut.

@PooltoyWolf I’m not a big fan of candy, but I can mindlessly inhale a bag of circus peanuts without even noticing. That’s why I avoid buying them.
@Kyeh @yakkoTDI I’m almost the opposite! I LOVE how they taste, but I can only eat so many of them in one sitting. Much like the oft-maligned candy corn…
@yakkoTDI I was given a “circus peanut” once. That was enough. I had forgotten that they had the banana nature, but I remembered to avoid them nevertheless.
Lime. I was so mad when they got rid of lime skittles and changed them to apple.
@kjady Lime is back as of 2023. Skittles still are not great - but at least I do not need to toss the green ones.
@browncj7 @kjady I have to cull out the purple ones; they make me slightly nauseous. (I can’t eat very many of any of the colors, for that matter.)
strawberry
All right, who’s the joker that was going to say “durian”?
@werehatrack
So good that it’s worth repeating… Lemon!

Pucker up!
@Lynnerizer I love it for baked goods - Safeway has lemon madeleines right now and they’re TOO GOOD! But for candy I like red fruits.
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer I’m the same way with lemon, i think I’m too much of a wuss with tartness & need something to mellow it out a little. I don’t love it in hot/savory dishes, either, but give me ALL the lemon desserts you can come up with.
@ircon96 @Kyeh

And frozen lemon ice things! Like Italian ice or slushy, but WAY BETTER!
Kyeh, red candy is the best except for cherry!
@ircon96 @Lynnerizer I’ll take all the cherry candy and give you all the lemon ones, how’s that.
@Lynnerizer Oh, I’ll share the cherry ones with you, @ircon96!
@ircon96 @Kyeh @Lynnerizer Flashback unlocked!! Cherry lemonade from Steak N Shake 2 blocks from the bicycle shop that started my journey. So delicious and before I discovered how bad sugar is.
@ircon96 @Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI
It does sound good.
Your journey - as a cyclist?
@Kyeh Yes.
@ircon96 @Lynnerizer Oh, there IS one lemon candy that I can’t get enough of - it’s Italian turrone nougat (which I think actually has real lemon flavor, not artificial.) But the lemon in it is mellow, not sharp, and delicious!

But in a week or two it might - you never know around here.
@ircon96 @Kyeh @yakkoTDI
Lol

Please keep the snow for yourself, I’m ready for the pool!
NO SNOW for me!
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI Same here–we’ve had just about every kind of precipitation recently, so I’m just trying to manifest it, as the kids say these days.
@ircon96 @Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI Here’s one of my flowerbeds late this afternoon.
I think the plants are happy; it’s been pretty dry.
@ircon96 @Kyeh @yakkoTDI

Looks like spring to me!🪻
But then again I did wonder if that white stuff was snow or hail balls…
Yesterday It was 68° and I’m almost embarrassed to say we turned the AC on for a while.

@ircon96 @Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI I think it’s what they call “graupel” - but some of it was regular snow.
@ircon96 @Kyeh @yakkoTDI
Always learning something new here, I’m actually surprised that I never heard that word before!
@ircon96 @Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI Our local weather guys LOVE the word, that’s the only reason I know it! They look like Dippin Dots to me!

Rambutan
@heartny Looks like a tribble mated with a strawberry, but sounds delicious!
@heartny @ircon96
@heartny @ircon96 It’s a relative of the lychee. I could easily have mistaken it for those.
@werehatrack Oddly enough, I was intending to say lychee but couldn’t remember the name so I went with rambutan, which would seem easier to forget.
@heartny @werehatrack Like a lychee in need of an appointment at the groomers!
Banana/ Strawberry
Blue!
Cherry
@Kyeh
This.
Watermelon, duh
Raspberry
Where is “purple”?
Peach (in iced tea packets)
Artificial bubblegum flavor. I’ve heard that real bubblegum fruit tastes better but is hard to find.
I read somewhere that banana flavoring doesn’t taste much like real bananas because it was developed when the Gros Michel was dominant.
It was almost killed off by Panama disease and was replaced commercially by the Cavendish, the banana we eat today.
The Big Mike was tastier and less prone to bruising.
@craigthom And now the Cavendish is in danger of the same fate. Monoculture is seldom a good strategy.
@craigthom we still grow Gros Michel bananas here in the VIrgin Islands. They are a hybrid between GM and the local “fig” bananas
they are also unexportable - each plant yields a hand of 20-30 fruit (Michel plants yielded 60+) and the skins are very thin.
they are delicious. Much tastier than a grocery store tube-of-starch Cavendish.
@craigthom @lisagd The Cavendish monoculture has served the fruit industry well for 70+ years; that’s hardly a massive failure. mango
@pskemp2
Mango pudding at Indian restaurants is delicious!
none
I always thought I didn’t like limes because I grew up eating Life Savers and other artificially flavored candy. It turns out that limes are much better in person.
@lisagd they crave the limelight.
@lisagd There’s a product called True Lime that provides a credible and useful substitute. Of course, that’s because it’s explicitly not artificial.
Artificial watermelon, FTW.
Artificial cherry, FTL*
*for the loss!
Oh, also pineapple
Strawberry.
Buy American
Grape… As I mentioned in the “discuss today’s deal” thread, scents and tastes can be strongly linked to memories. One whiff or taste of artificial grape flavoring, and I am transported to 1973, making out with Kathy (my pretty high school girlfriend who always wore grape lip gloss!)
@jimdkc That is the kind of memory one would hope to have, and be able to treasure. You’re fortunate.
Dragon fruit. Inspired by my trip to Whole Paycheck and Fruit Ninja.
@heartny You found dragon fruit candy?
@Kyeh Not at Whole Paycheck. If I remember where I saw it I’ll let you know. Maybe the Ebisu Life Store?
@heartny It looks like there’s a Hi-Chew mix with dragon fruit, kiwi and acai flavors. Hmmm.
@Kyeh Ooh, that sounds very yummy!
@heartny Available at World Market and Safeway, and of course Amazon. I might have to try them.
@Kyeh Saw this candle in Marshall’s. It smelled great! Was tempted to take a bite.
@heartny Yum!
