I am a hit on buying gifts that are on time but a miss on buying gifts that are thoughtful. Fortunately, Visa gift cards pass the buck from me to the recipient…so you can say I am a hit all the way around!
It’s not the thoughtful, it’s the on time that kills me. If my immediate family’s birthdays weren’t all within a day or less of a major, retail blast holiday, I wouldn’t even remember those.
Generally, I’m really good about getting people thoughtful gifts on time. I’m also apt to MAKE (I know, shocker) thoughtful gifts if I feel so inclined. I guess the takeaway from this is that you’re lucky if I pick your name for secret Santa.
The one time I absolutely hit the nail on the head: I have a friend who loves her two cats and loves stuffed animals, so I made little knitted plush versions of her cats. I even found long shaggy black-and-brown yarn that matched her tortoiseshell cat, and I made sure to put an eye on the correct side for her one-eyed black cat. She said they’re the best gift she’s ever received, and they’re the best gift I’ve ever given, and pretty much all the other gifts I give suck. Once is good enough for me! Sorry, everyone else I know.
Actually, one time I nailed a regift, too! My sister sent me a t-shirt with a parrot inside a ribcage where the heart should be, since she knows I like birds. It was a photorealistic Fischer’s lovebird, which are beautiful. I actually gasped when I took it out of the package, because a friend of mine had recently lost her own beloved Fischer’s. The shirt didn’t fit me AT ALL, so I gave it to my friend, and it fit her perfectly, and she loved it. She teared up when she saw it.
i keep notes in my phone of things, the people i buy gifts for, mention, then when i find it on sale, usually after christmas, then i buy it for the next christmas. my shopping for the year, including birthdays, is almost always done months before fall. after that i just pick up little things i find great deals on & add to the gifts i already have. everyone gets stuff they want/like, i get it for great prices and with no stress!

Had to buy 3 somethings for people. Horrible time keeping items in cart. Eventually I cheated and used 1 click ordering. Will fix gift card balance eventually.
Although I suppose that’s what happens when the holidays collide.
@PlacidPenguin ah, but were they technically gifts, IE were you buying them to gift them to somebody else or just helping a family member conceal their purchases which just happen to be items that said family member will gift to someone eventually?
@PlacidPenguin
If technically your purchases were to accomplish neither of the @jbartis options, then technically the answers to “how” and “why” are incomplete.
Underwear. And socks. Lots of socks.
@fuzzmanmatt based on smell, some people are in need of underwear and sock so as long as you buy these items on time, I think you’re excellent!
I can buy a thoughtful gift. Or… I could. If I was giving a gift to a person that I knew.
But on time?! What am I, a train? I’m just an animated meat-based calendar to you, is that it?
I just buy stuff that I like.
I am really thoughtful, when it comes to buying stuff for myself. Does that count?

I just buy lots of knives and bluetooth speakers and try to give them away to everyone.
Oh, and coincidentally, enough various Contigo and Bubba mugs to cover the dining room table totally piss off my wife.
Thoughtful?
On time?

I don’t buy gifts.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@f00l those were somethings, not gifts!
@f00l @jbartus
Actually, those were gifts from someone else. They asked me to buy them through my account.
@PlacidPenguin
@jbartus
/8ball Details,details?
Without a doubt
@f00l
What kind of details would you like?
@PlacidPenguin
The journalist’s standard arsenal.
Who what when where why and how?
@f00l
Who: A family member.
What: Toys.
When: Tonight.
Where: Amazon.
Why: For gifts.
How: Purchasing them.
@PlacidPenguin
And bravo!
@PlacidPenguin ah, but were they technically gifts, IE were you buying them to gift them to somebody else or just helping a family member conceal their purchases which just happen to be items that said family member will gift to someone eventually?
@jbartus
Technically neither of the main options.

I usually find the perfect gift after the fact. But it’s perfect
