Band Nerd Alert!
16I’m so stinking proud and happy that I think my band nerd heart may explode. My tallest and eldest child was selected for our district honor band. They had their concert this afternoon part of which was played with Oregons Army National Guard band. It was fantastic. He also had a solo which he was a little nervous about but absolutely killed. I’m truly beaming right now! They played Flourish for wind band by Vaughn Williams, Army of the Nile by Alford, Some treasures are heavy with human tears by John Mackey, Fantasia by Copley, and Journey Through Orion by Giroux. It was so good! Just had to share!

On the way to Carnegie Hall!
Congrats to your sprout.
Got a link for a YouTube video?
@phendrick oh! I have the audio files. Maybe I can put them on my YouTube channel since I’m going to actually have to start using it.
That’s spectacular.

Beam on…
Congrats to your son.
Is that an oboe or clarinet?
@kittykat9180 he plays clarinet, bassoon and trombone. He was actually kind of over the moon because I told him he’s now earned the right to use my clarinet for concert season. Just not marching band.
@sillyheathen
Wow, that’s awesome.
A lifetime ago I played clarinet in elementary school and then oboe in middle school.
LEGOS! EGGOS! STRATEGO! AWESOME!
@kittykat9180 I have been a band nerd since I first picked up my clarinet the summer before fourth grade. I play a whole host of instruments, though almost strictly woodwinds. The English horn has been my favorite instrument since I learned to play it in high school but I have never found one that I can afford. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with it but you’d probably like it as it’s essentially a bass oboe.
@sillyheathen
Wow, i’m impressed by people who can play multiple instruments.
I can’t even read music anymore.
@kittykat9180 it kind of grosses me out to think about it now but when I was in middle school and high school, a bunch of us used to stay after school to practice for various honor bands and we’d often swap instruments and try to teach one another how to play our instruments.
I was never patient enough for trumpet or French horn or higher brass. But I found low brass fascinating. But I do prefer the bass range of instruments in the orchestra. I played contra bass clarinet - eflat and bflat, bass clarinet, bassoon, and English horn. I really wanted to try contra bassoon but well no high school ever had one.
I also played a little bari and tenor sax. I wasn’t a fan of the alto or soprano though. There are other reasons for that though which I won’t go into.
@kittykat9180 @sillyheathen Another clarinet player here. After 9th grade I never played again. I wish I had stuck with it.
@kittykat9180 @yakkoTDI you probably remember more than you realize. Maybe find an inexpensive one and pick it up again. I play with a local group sometimes. I miss it terribly.
