I’ve had a bit of luck with the derbies lately; today’s win is special because I’ve been trying to place in a Halloween derby for 7 years. Finally rang that bell! 
Time to celebrate with some shirt giveaways!

@ACraigL Yes. When my wife allowed me to buy a movie accurate set of trooper armor, I had to agree to do book fairs at my kids elementary school. I think it was a fair trade off

I’m always curious about T-shirt artists like this… is this a primary moneymaker for you, or just strictly a hobby and the money is irrelevant?

As far as woot in concerned, some in column A some in column B. Personally, I have a full-time job that has nothing to do with art – quite the opposite as I’m in operations. But I’ve always loved drawing and this gives me a great opportunity for a creative outlet while allowing me to express my humor (hopefully!).
As far as the money is concerned, while not my primary source of income, it is far from irrelevant. It’s a nice, somewhat passive inflow, and makes other purchase decisions much easier knowing that it is a factor.
I guess you can say, I came for the art and I stayed for the money?

Congrats. My plans for Halloween are to pass out candy! My city doesn’t always have trick or treat fall on actual Halloween, but it does this year. I dress up as an adult, but this year I have a 3 dollar “chick magnet” thing to go around my neck. It is a stylized magnet with little chicks on it.
If anyone lives in a large city that sells dry ice, I highly recommend getting some for trick or treat. The kids love it! Just put some in a shallow dish inside a cauldron, jack-o-lantern, whatever and gradually add water throughout the evening. In Columbus I can get 20 lbs for 25 bucks. Also ice cream shops that ship their products may have some to sell you if your city doesn’t have a retail supplier.

Star Wars again
All in all it’s a cute star was shirt, one I’d even would wear and I’m not a fan of Star Wars.
If I was gonna dress up for Halloween (I’m not bc we’re not going anywhere and have zero trick or treaters) I would be the Wendy’s girl but make the costume myself. I’d braid my hair and put hangers in them, get some Wendy’s bags and decoupage a purse, I’d have to really be on the thrift store hunt for a outfit though.
@Star2236 I get the Star Wars exhaustion. For better or for worse, it’s a popular topic for voters and purchasers, so it’s here to stay. While I do my share of it for sure, this particular idea was on my to-do list for about 4 years. I kept deferring it because I thought I didn’t have the skills to pull it off.
I went for it this year and was really happy with the outcome.

@markkorn Kids are grown and flown so we don’t do a whole lot for Halloween anymore. We did move to a new neighborhood last year, so I intend to show up with FULL BARS for the kids.

I put in a vote for the Science shirt, I typically go for a Halloween costume that would have been a great idea a month earlier with a few more hours of prep.
Not saying that’s my goal, just that’s where I seem to land every year.

I won once so I’m probably ineligible. If I won again I’d get Merry Llamas. I was at a trivia event last weekend where that would have been very popular.
My go-to Halloween costume is Pirate, but the last few years since my kid aged out of trick or treating I haven’t really bothered at all.

@ACraigL How did you get the gold leaf effect with a limited color palette? (Besides sheer talent.)
@blaineg That’s easy. There is no limited color palette.
Since woot moved to DTG (direct to garment) from screen printing, they removed any such limitation. That said, it wouldn’t be too much of a challenge to halftone that effect to just 2 or 3 colors.
@blaineg DTG provides near photographic color ranges via the use of the same tech that is used in other print media, with the addition of a white underbase. Cyan, magenta, yellow and black dots in closely controlled sizes can simulate almost any shade with reasonable accuracy. It can’t do an actual metallic effect, and the press time per shirt is ridiculously long by screen standards, but those (and the very high startup and per-shirt ink costs) are the only significant drawbacks now.
@blaineg @werehatrack It definitely changed the way I think about designing. I still have to flex those halftone muscles now and again (like when I print at Mediocritee, for example) but factoring in how it will be printed is no longer something I have to worry about when I get started.

@ACraigL @blaineg The big thing for the designer is that with most of the printer drivers I’ve seen demos on, you can ignore using color sep layers and just flatten the whole image. Not needing to pay attention to that is a big thing.

@ACraigL The detail works different in different lighting angles. This was a was a quick phone shot. The detail in your original shot isn’t quite there, but if I dance about like Kevin Bacon (as I often do) I can see it. But for $11, this is a homerun
