@narfcake
I was sure you would have so many that you no longer know what you have. I no longer know what I have (I do have “Nevermore”), and I prob have fewer than 30 of them.
@ianrbuck It seems to me that an object that has a meaningful effect upon the orbit of a main system planet, orbits within the orbit of a main system planet at times, and was taught as a planet for ~70 years might have been deserving of being grandfathered in. In the long run it’s much ado about nothing, but so was the objection to leaving it as a planet in name.
@jbartus I’m saying it is easier to have the relatively simple definition of a planet and give up Pluto than to develop a complex set of parameters that define a planet so as to include Pluto but not things like Eris.
@f00l no to what? Arguing Pluto should still be a planet is like arguing that birds aren’t theropods. If you want to create a labyrinthine rule set to maintain the status quo, be my guest, just realize no one will use your method in a few generations when a simpler one is already there.
@simplersimon you seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the term grandfathering means. Nobody is discussing altering the definition, simply declaring Pluto an exception to the rules out of deference to tradition.
@simplersimon
Let me explain. I actually know astronomers. Good ones. One spent much of his career at a university whose name starts with “H”.
I also know that the pop culture status of Pluto has little to do with rigorous scientific definitions of the concept of “planet”. And that the dichotomy is incredibly funny. (To almost everyone, anyway.)
This is a non-scientific internet forum. Trust me on this one, I checked.
(And as an aside, there’s that “grandfathering” option.)
@awk Actually, the New Horizons mission found tons of interesting stuff going on on Pluto. Nothing that makes it qualify as a planet, but interesting stuff all the same.
Without Pluto, those old Mnemonic phrases just leave you in suspense:
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine …
Many Very Early Men Just Sat Under Native …
My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming …
@daveinwarsh ah, my dad had a full set of the books and lost them in a flood. Turned out his “fire safe” was pretty low quality, thus not water proof. Probably not fireproof, either.
@cranky1950 Pluto is now a “dwarf planet” - just like Makemake, Haumea and Eris. Silly names. They should have named them Grumpy, Bashful, Dopey, and Sneezy.
I like Mars, actually I like everything related with space. I also like to watch the Earth on the webcam on http://solarstory.net/webcams/ . I follow NASA news too. I have heard that they are working to send humans to an asteroid by 2025 and Mars in the 2030s.
The one I visit when I toke.
@MrsPavlov One Toke Over The Line sweet Jesus One Toke Over The Line
There’s no way that Pluto and Uranus won’t be one and two respectively.
Edit: Maybe I expected more out of Uranus.
@hems79
We must protest a galaxy-level misclassification here. Uranus will get honored next time we fart.
@hems79 don’t look at me, I voted for Uranus.

Jupiter. He’s big and gassy, and a bit of a dick about the whole thing, and is always getting spied on by government satellites. I can totally relate.
http://shirt.woot.com/offers/uranus-is-the-future
@narfcake I just wore that shirt, yesterday.
@TheCO2 I actually don’t have this one.
@narfcake That has to be a rarity.
@TheCO2 Not really, as the back CATalog has over 6k designs. And I’m nowhere near that.
@narfcake I figured you were close.
@narfcake
I was sure you would have so many that you no longer know what you have. I no longer know what I have (I do have “Nevermore”), and I prob have fewer than 30 of them.
@f00l You’re correct on that.
I also misplace them from time to time. A solution to that is to just buy more copies.
http://shirt.woot.com/offers/nocturnowl
Granted, a good reason is because the Anvils are shitty and don’t hold up.
Those two copies have been retired, two additional neckstretch Anvils also have holes, and two mutant Anvils were cut into tanks.
Wow, really? So many people salty that Kuiper Belt Objects aren’t planets?
@ianrbuck Yes.

@jbartus meh, we needed a meaningful cut off, and this was less of a headache than shoehorning it in to fit tradition.
@simplersimon how would that have been more of a headache? Just saying ‘this was less of a headache’ doesn’t make it so.
@jbartus I’m saying it is easier to have the relatively simple definition of a planet and give up Pluto than to develop a complex set of parameters that define a planet so as to include Pluto but not things like Eris.

Why are so many people picking Pluto? It sucks. It’s a dark barren frozen rock. Nothing interesting happens on Pluto. Fuck Pluto.

Scientists are going to rename Uranus in 2060.
For this group, your anus should be the number 1 choice!
Pluto isn’t a planet, the joke isn’t funny anymore. You might as well entertain the idea of a flat earth.

OK!

@DrunkCat I thought they repromoted it to a planet again.
