I love all the treks, they were a great source of scifi concepts and stories throughout my life… I even liked enterprise, although that theme song… ugh… what were they thinking?
Funny story. It’s not my kind of music, but that theme song’s tone has always basically worked for me. On the one hand, you’ve got astronauts. Then, you’ve got technological progress that nobody expects: development of a warp drive. Then, third thing, faith in humanity. Nobody has any faith in humanity. We’re a really shit species. As far as I can see, it’s nothing but dystopia from here on out.
… so… that’s my defense of the widely panned theme song, wherever it came from. Feels like a particularly on the nose* expression of “Look, the better part of our natures. Star Trek. Hope for the future. Etc.”
* qualification: I don’t know the song nor the singer, and I might not have listened to every last word of the lyrics.
@thismyusername This is the piece of music that articulates what the space program means to me. It’s by sci fi convention “filk” singer Leslie Fish. Given Enterpise’s role in the Trekverse this would have been a good choice.
@thismyusername I tried just now but couldn’t finish listening to it. Was there ever a time Rod Stewart appealed to teenagers, though? I just always associate him with what I guess is adult contemporary.
@lilsrm123 If you ever get around to it, I’d maybe skip the original series. (And take it a bit easy on the first season of the next generation.) I think after those, WYSIWYG until the JJ Abrams movies.
For a while we would do a weekly Star Trek dinner party with @skemmehs (and others) where we discussed and second-guessed the right way to solve TNG problems and I recommend that to anyone who ever wants a fun evening. Captain Sam’s Enterprise would have put Kirk to shame.
@skemmehs
Every ST problem can be solved by getting Kirk, or resurrected Kirk, or virtual Kirk, to give a pompous dramatic speech, but if Bones is not feeling irascible, the Kirk Speech Option doesn’t work as well.
There are people I have only spoken to using Tamarian quotations. I’ve gotten a girl’s number speaking a broken tlhIngan Hol, and another’s using Thomas Riker quotes. My father was a trekkie, my mother is a trekkie, and her father is a trekker. My dad wanted to raise me Vulcan, but Mom had her limits. I may not know as much about it as some, but it is a defining characteristic of my entire life. And TNG will always win.
I’m not a Star Trek tv show fan but for anyone else who isn’t either, I can’t recommend it enough if you are having trouble sleeping. If it is airing on some channel, turn it on while you are in bed, and w/in a few minutes you will be in dreamland.

@thismyusername They were thinking they were on a channel targeting teenagers.
@thismyusername Myeahhh… the theme from Patch Adams? Really?
@thismyusername Heheh.

@jqubed I’m not even sure teenagers ever listened to that song, even when Rod Stewart sang it
@PocketBrain ikr
@InnocuousFarmer it’s just TNG and voyager and DS9 sorta had the orchestral theme going… then out of the blue the patch adams song… um… huh?
@moondrake let me guess, your in charge of the picking the theme song for Discovery
@thismyusername their space suits had pockets! It fits!
(Wasn’t Enterprise supposed to be closer to modern day and more relatable, or something? Never got around to watching more than a few episodes.)
Pockets!
@InnocuousFarmer it’s supposed to be before the original series in the original universe, so closer to modern day for sure…
@thismyusername 2100 is basically tomorrow. Spot on. (Neat image, too.)

@thismyusername Interesting, but no.
@jqubed
Yeah, he wasn’t all syrup once.

I still never seen Star Trek.

@lilsrm123 you will have plenty to binge if you ever get the desire.

@phendrick Is that an indictment of the content or grammar of the statement "I still never seen Star Trek

I have the amazing ability to identify any TNG episode after seeing the first 30 seconds or so. I grew up on it. But…DS9 has my vote for best series.
Last year I bought myself the box set of TNG for $100 for my birthday.
Unfortunately though, the box came with cracks, and DVDs were missing.
Still have not bought a new box set.
@f00l - This is kind of what I meant when I mentioned finances. There’s a whole list of things I’ve been meaning to buy for over a year.
@PlacidPenguin
You couldn’t return/exchange the boxed set?
Wouldn’t chocolate help?
@f00l
As that post said, I returned it. Such a hassle though.
@PlacidPenguin
Sorry, didn’t click thru the link.
@f00l
In that case:
At least one DVD was missing, though I didn’t check the whole thing.
.
Ugh.
@thumperchick - Could you edit that to be a hyperlink to the picture with this as the plain text: “Lesson learned: Always try to buy sealed box sets.”
@Ignorant
@mfladd I was hoping that this poll would entice @stardate820926 to come out of hiding, but so far, no joy.
@Trillian I know. I hope she is well.

@slydon
Wait a second, how did you solve the problem of Kirk not being alive for the time-frame which TNG is set in?
@slydon Every problem can be solved by separating the saucer section
@skemmehs
Naturally.

@simplersimon I tried that using Rules of Acquisition. Not very successful.
What? No love for TAS?
Kzin for the win.
@PocketBrain The entire show had 12 frames.
@PocketBrain canon? we don’t need to stinking canon…

No, but I think I got one of the guys from there in my fuko.
DS9 is the only correct option.
@DrunkCat
Hmmm…
Never watched DS9.
The original and TNG are my favorites. Never saw Enterprise and couldn’t get into DS9. Voyager was entertaining, but the end was a gigantic letdown.
Another series of letdowns: Insurrection and Nemesis.
@JT954 Good ole Seven of Nine to the rescue!

Didn’t like the show but liked the newer movies
