Galactic Goat makes a Pi

No, not “pie”…

…but Pi. As in Raspberry Pi.

Yup, this post was written on my newly set up Raspberry Pi. The nifty little credit card sized, dirt cheap computer. I grabbed a deal on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B on Pi Day, March 14th for $33.

If nothing else, the Goat is a gadget goat to be sure.

I love to tinker and fuss and build. The hours of fun which can be had with a proto board, some resistors, transistors, a couple 556 ICs, a speaker and some LED’s is unbelievable. About $10 in electronic components have filled numerous, pointless hours.

Building hot rods, electronics, drones, Home Automation and IoT… if there are tools and creativity involved, the Goat is gonna enjoy it.

So tonight I decided to finally unbox my Pi and put it all together.

“Ok, Pi, not pie. But what can you DO with it?” you ask? Dunno!

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But I’m fixin’ ta find out. A few things I’ve discovered so far: The standard OS, Raspbian, is essentially a Debian Unux-like OS with an elegant GUI, similar to Ubuntu. The easy (and free) NOOBS OS installer for Raspberry Pi includes one-click distributions for everything from assorted UNIX-like OSes to a Kodi distro and even a retro game emulator called recallboxOS (complete with about 3 dozen machine emulators like NES, SNES, Gameboy, PlayStation, Genesis, Gameboy Advance… so many more!).

“Uh… what??” Well, if you have no idea what any of that means, it won’t really interest you anyway.

Galactic Goat is always looking for new ways to fritter away his precious little free time. How about sharing some of your favorite “tinker gadgets”? Are you into Arduino? BeagleBone? MinnowBoard? Maybe it’s high-tech crafting like 3D printers or Cricut? Gaming? R/C? Model trains? Share your favorites!
