It’s time for the winter blahs. So cold, so windy, the holidays are over, the house is a mess, no more fantasy football, and I have to put my light-up Crocs away until next year. Vacation anyone?
@aetris ah, I did think that might be it. She goes around with her ears inside out. I think it might be some kind of punk fahion statement. Kids these day.
If you can get to a coast you can get a Caribbean cruise pretty cheap if you seriously shop around. Find your best price and then run it thru cruisecompete.com. In the old days they’d discount cruises but the cruise lines forbid it, so now they offer on board credits and premium restaurant passes to shop through them. I generally pay less than $100 a day for the Caribbean, plus get at least $100 on board credit and a premium meal or two.
But as long as we’re dreaming, I’ll take The Maldives, still way outside my deal making reach.
My boss is on vacation at this very moment, on a cruise in the Caribbean. Which was supposed to mean two weeks housesitting with her dog and two cats, which always feels like a vacation for me. But her son is home now, so I’m out of a job again.
@TheFLP Oh really! I got pneumonia at the end of my trip in Santiago, Chile one time. Had to fly home with my head totally congested. Couldn’t hear for days. Miserable. She may need another one, lol… you may still get yours!
Oh god I would so love to spend a week at beer can beach wiggling my toes in the sand while quaffing Guinness and eating Alabama Jack’s crab cakes and fish stew.
Just got back yesterday from 2 weeks in London. No beach, but awesome nonetheless. Rode the Tube, saw castles and palaces, danced to 2AM, saw fantastic Christmas street decorations, amazing fireworks show, drank warm beer, bought clothes, forgot about Trump, and everywhere we went as soon as people heard our accents they said “You’re Americans! We love Americans!” and they bought us a round. Lovely place, even if they drive on the wrong side of the road. Great vacation.
@stevart Did you go just to see the ice caves? Because I wouldn’t have though winter was the time to visit Iceland but that article says the caves will kill you in the summer. That would be no fun at all. So beautiful!
I just rented a big beach house at the gulf for in a few weeks. Gonna bring my parents and my daughter’s family and my other daughter and her guy and his kids. Looking forward to just sitting and listening to the surf and walking the beach.
@lseeber Which area of the gulf? I have always been partial to the Pensacola/Navarre area, or the ‘forgotten coast’ around Apalachicola/St George Island. Convenient for us in central AL. I love the gulf in the ‘off season’. You will have a blast I’m sure. Sand, surf and family… should be good times.
@chienfou First place I tried to get was in Navarre but the only place I could find available during the time we need with 5 bdrooms is Orange Beach.
Yes… should be nice. I need the break!
@lseeber one of the nurses I work with rented a (5br?) house on Navarre beach for the week of Christmas and had his whole family down as well. Some came and went throughout the week. He had a blast.
Father in law used to have a house on Sabine Bay (Pensacola Beach). We loved going there while he was alive and the kids have great memories of our visits there.
My SIL has a rental house on St George Island so we have been going there lately. (I do some maintenance etc. in exchange for the rental fee). I am a definite beach person, and at some point need to find a way to retire to the sand and surf…
Don’t forget to go the ‘The Hangout’ in Orange Beach It’s a lot of fun for groups of all ages.
@chienfou I have a friend that owns a couple of houses there but none of them beachfront. And I want…in the sand! I grew up a block away from the beach in New England and really just figured as a kid that everyone had a beach, lol. I do enjoy going there for the occasional vacation but for every day, give me the mountains and a stream. I used to go to the gulf frequently but haven’t been since one of my daughters got married there some yrs ago. Looking forward tho
@lseeber Does there = Navarre, SGI or GS?
If you haven’t been to GS, aka LA (lower Alabama ) to the locals, you will have a blast.
The gulf coast of AL/FL is some of the prettiest beach around as far as water and sand. Too bad it’s like a giant dessert so there isn’t much to see if you like to snorkel. Still some of the coolest beaches to stroll since they are so deep and the sand ‘squeaks’ when you walk on it. (it’s originally from the Appalachians, moved down during the last ice age)
One of my favorites walks on the beach featured a school of 7-8 baby manta rays the size of hubcaps that were cruising the crystal clear water between the surf line and the beach one November on SGI. We kept running ahead of them, getting in the water, then watching them come towards us only to veer off to either side when they got a few feet away. Get out of water, run down beach, repeat… Iw was AWESOME!
How about Tahiti? Let’s stay in one of these huts over the water.
And these nice folks will bring us breakfast by canoe.
I’d be in - except for the $6.5k pp part.
@aetris You must be new to Meh vacations. Find us some fun tropical activities online and post a photo.
I think I already posted this one, but here’s the lighting of the dog for a Caribbean Christmas:
@aetris I lit up my dogs for Christmas too. I told Tempest she looks like one of those kids from Village of the Damned.
@moondrake
tagline time!
"Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!"
TWO gigantic hounds, a VERY small horse, and what looks to be a plastic bust of Constantine the Great (or, possibly, a vacuum cleaner attachment.)
This is driving me nuts - Zephyr reminds me of something too, this isn’t quite it:
@aetris At the very back? It’s one of those fake fireplace space heaters set into my nonfunctioning fireplace.
@moondrake - I think I was actually confused by Tempest’s right ear.
@aetris ah, I did think that might be it. She goes around with her ears inside out. I think it might be some kind of punk fahion statement. Kids these day.
I do. Good thing I have a few coming up!
I’m going back to work today after having ten days off for vacation. I’m so bummed.
I’ll gladly take another vacation since I didn’t actually go anywhere.
@RiotDemon
I called in sick on your behalf. Got out my phony medical credentials just for you.
Explained that you need an emergency tropical vacation, STAT.
You people are harshing my mellow. Just for that we’re going surfing.
Keep it up and I’ll post photos of firemen and puppies.
@sammydog01 How about puppies, sans the firemen?
@sammydog01 I’ll take @ruouttaurmind’s firemen.
@ruouttaurmind
@RiotDemon
@sammydog01 Very diplomatic solution.
I’m in.
/image tahiti beach
How will we get there?
We need some transportation.
/image tropical sailboat
Calling @CaptAmehrican for boat recommendations
@sammydog01 keep watching boat of the day
@f00l I love the way this one looks like it is flying, not floating!
Let’s take our pets.
/image pets beach
Mr Bandit is IN!
/image crocs on the beach
@f00l <in best Crocodile Dundee imitation> That’s not a crock on the beach…
THIS is a crock on the beach!
@ruouttaurmind Hard to keep 'em on your feet tho.
@lseeber on the other hand likely hard not to keep your feet IN them.
@lseeber
Nah, once they latch on it’s difficult to get ‘em back off!
@ruouttaurmind True that. Then it’s just hard to keep your feet on.

@moondrake
Ahhhhhh!
@moondrake I want to go there too!
@OldCatLady
Can you help recruit some crew?
@mfladd
You don’t want @OldCatLady to choose the entire crew, do you? Help recruit.
@f00l Ship’s crew reporting for duty.
Keep rocking the Crocs; today is only the ninth day of Christmas.
@OldCatLady Good point! By the last day of Christmas my new tropical Crocs will be here.
Yes yes and YES! So stressed that the word stress doesn’t even adequately describe my current situation anymore. #harveyyouruinedmanylives
I just got back around 5 or 6 in the morning from my vacation in space. I visited a moon and built a secondary base there. It was awesome.
/image Empyrion - Galactic Survival
Vacation. New job. I’ll take either one.
I busted my ankle and will be out of work for 10 weeks, does that count as a vacation?
@Nyc_Tattoo ouwww
@Nyc_Tattoo depends of what you do for a living I suppose! (and whether you have sick leave/short term disability available)
@Nyc_Tattoo What kind of medication do you have?
My boss is on vacation at this very moment, on a cruise in the Caribbean. Which was supposed to mean two weeks housesitting with her dog and two cats, which always feels like a vacation for me. But her son is home now, so I’m out of a job again.
@TheFLP Aww. That sucks!
@lseeber What really sucked was her coming down with the flu and bronchitis at the end. Number one on my list of ways not to end your vacation.
She’s still coming down off the prednisone. I think she needs another vacation already.
@TheFLP Oh really! I got pneumonia at the end of my trip in Santiago, Chile one time. Had to fly home with my head totally congested. Couldn’t hear for days. Miserable. She may need another one, lol… you may still get yours!
@lseeber I’m more likely to get the flu than a vacation right now.
I was thinking Buffalo.
@mfladd
/giphy buffalo?
@mfladd Can you get me playoff tickets?
@sammydog01 Congrats!
send me in coach… I am ready…
Send ME in business class - it’s a vacation-worthy expenditure:
@mikibell I was beginning to think I was the only one that didn’t equate “vacation” with “beach”.
@DrWorm I don’t either - vacation can be anywhere you want to have your vacation…
@DrWorm
It’s a holiday-fatigue, winter-weather thing.
/image tropical beach
Oh god I would so love to spend a week at beer can beach wiggling my toes in the sand while quaffing Guinness and eating Alabama Jack’s crab cakes and fish stew.
@cranky1950
/giphy beer can beach
@sammydog01 Somebody actually put up a web page.
Beer Can Beach
@cranky1950 Oops wrong beer can beach, this one is on the west coast. The other one is in Manatee Bay. Looks pretty much the same though.
@cranky1950
@cranky1950 Nice!
Bahia Honda State Park
You can actually drive there and camp on the beach.
Yes I need a vacation. A real one. I haven’t had one since 2008.
Just got back yesterday from 2 weeks in London. No beach, but awesome nonetheless. @Sarahsda
Envious.
/youtube "England swings"
@Sarahsda Wow, I didn’t think anyone loved Americans. Sounds fun!
I just returned from vacation. I visited Iceland!
Just look!

@lseeber Can I come? You won’t even notice me. I’m quiet.

@sammydog01 Sure… you can babysit the grands!

I’ve been there many many times. I enjoy it.
@lseeber
My motto is “A bad day at the beach is still better than a good day at work…”
I’m in Costa Rica at the moment if you want to pop in
@mehbee heh… my sis in law is in Costa Rica right now too.
@lseeber Did she absolutely love it??? I did!
Oh… always. She goes twice a year for about 20 yrs. Her mother in law lives there.
