Anyone have a 3D printer?
2I’m rebuilding a SnakeCharmer .410 shotgun that went through a house fire. The metal parts have been cleaned, pits filled and sanded, and powder coated. The forend and buttstock are being carved out of some oak I have glued up.
The problem is the trigger guard. The original one was plastic which along with the wood forend and butt stock did not survive the fire. The company who build this thing went bankrupt a couple decades ago so replacement parts are not available. Anywhere.
I have found an stl file to make one.
Is there anyone out there who could print this part for me? Everyone locally says they won’t print gun parts.
This is not a lower receiver or a serial numbered part so let me assure you it is perfectly legal to make and mail a trigger guard as long as it’s not going to or coming from a foreign country. No FFL is required.
If you can help please let me know. Needless to say I will reimburse all expenses.

Can’t help. But love this project.
Can you print me a nice 4-2-2, at least 2200 sq feet, good condition, easy commute, not on a corner, decent trees, no flood zone, in a nice neighborhood with a police officer living down the street?
@f00l What’s your price range?
@Mehrocco_Mole
Well, tech now and is the future inhabiting the present. So let’s say, $400.
That’s $400 not $400K
/giphy "do you believe in miracles"
@f00l Ummm… no.
/giphy "unrealistic fool"
@f00l
@narfcake I WANT ONE!!!
@narfcake
OMG Want Want Want Want Want.
Can you print the HVAC, power lines, plumbing system, security, etc?
@f00l Don’t get greedy.
Also, it was done on a larger scale in China:
@narfcake
Why not be greedy about 3D printed housing and other buildings?
Re: your vid:
WANT
@f00l The building part, I’m not questioning, but you were asking for “HVAC, power lines, plumbing system, security, etc” too … and that’s just asking for waaaaaay too much at your price tag.
@narfcake
The Tech Revolution is supposed to supply me with lots of perfectly behaved non-sentient techno-slaves that are child’s-play to program, and with endless prosperity.

@narfcake OMG that is too f’ing cool!
@f00l I don’t want one that big - 1200 sq will do as long as there is decent storage. I’d like folk victorian style please with a lovely porch that is perfect for a porch swing. I also need my grandmother’s porch swing replicated too.
I wish I had one, but when I was researching them, I came across this site: 3dhubs.com. Basically, anyone with a 3D printer can set up a “hub” and print objects for a price. It has a local search function, and I’m sure it would be cheaper than most other online services.
I can print that out for you.
I should add that I will not be back to check meh until later, so just leave your e-mail address here and I will contact you sometime this evening.
@tehtruth Thank you!! Email is my username without the underline at gmail.com. All lowercase and no punctuation.
@Mehrocco_Mole I think you will find that gmail is happy to accept your username in a variety of formats, such as Meh.R.Occom.Ole .
@sligett

Guns are dangerous and kill people
Is it a Snake Charmer or a Snake Charmer II? If you care much about authenticity I’ll keep an eye out for an OEM trigger guard… but if you can’t find someone with a printer, there are online services that will do it for you, local maker spaces that have them, local custom shops and sometimes even public libraries.
ETA: Nevermind! @tehtruth, what a nice fella
@Chops It’s a II (Has the safety) Thanks for the offer but when Sporting Arms went bankrupt they sold all remaining parts at auction to one supplier; Numrich. That supplier has been sold out for years now.
BTW: saying GUNS are dangerous and kill people is inaccurate. People kill people. We could also say:
Doctors are dangerous and kill people
Cars are dangerous and kill people
Ladders are dangerous and kill people
Falling rocks are dangerous and kill people
I could go on but I think I made my point.
Guns are nothing but a tool used to put food on a table, holes in a target, or for the protection of life, family, and property.
More people are killed or injured with baseball bats every year than with rifles of any kind. Do we say baseball bats are dangerous and kill people? No we do not because the majority of baseball bat users are honest law-abiding citizens using the baseball bat as designed and intended. The same applies to guns.
Rant out.
(Apologies to all current and former Marines out there. I am fully aware that guns are for fun…)
@Mehrocco_Mole i think @Chops was being tongue in cheek with the “guns kill people” line.
and yes, baseball bats are dangerous and do kill people. especially when there’s barbed wire wrapped around them.
@carl669 that’s just wrong… and pissed off a ton of fans…
@carl669 lol yeah, thanks… I guess that wasn’t as obvious as I was hoping it would be. Sometimes my jokes are more like “jokes.”
@Mehrocco_Mole parts for old/discontinued stuff like that can stick around surprisingly long. I’d say the majority of shops/smiths never destroy anything, they usually just get sold off in parts lots… so a lot of times if you’re after something specific like that, if you check around enough online and at shows, there’ll be somebody parting out different odds and ends. A lot of times it just isn’t worth it though unless you REALLY want it lol, some of those guys can be a tiny bit unrealistic about what their box of old, random parts is worth
@Chops I’m NEVER a sarcastic smart ass.
Damn that lightning was close!
If anyone is curious here is what a Snake Charmer II looks like:
I couldn’t save the stainless steel finish so mine is now powder coated black. The barrel is only 18" long.
[edit] Also above I said the original forend and butt stock were wood. They are plastic and also did not survive the fire. I’m using wood to replace them.
@Mehrocco_Mole With the size of that handle (I have no clue what most gun parts are called) you should also get a snow shovel printed up that fits up the barrel so that if you are carrying this thing around in the car and get stuck in mud or snow you can shovel your way out.
@Kidsandliz Ummm… I live in Florida. Haven’t lived in Northern Michigan for years so the snow shovel is… well, meh. It’s called the Butt stock or just stock. The other black part in front of the trigger is called the forend. To give you an idea of the size of this thing:
(Not me)
@Mehrocco_Mole Sand. You have sand in FL. Sand roads, sand beaches, sand dunes. You might get stuck in the sand. Actually it would be about the size of those collapsable shovels people buy to put in their trunk. A PITA to use, but better than your hands.
My son is doing odd jobs to save up for a 3-d printer… I expect he will have one soon after Christmas, if we get a good snowy winter. So if you are still in need by then, email me…
@mikibell What’s he planning on getting? I thought about buying a $200 Monoprice mini 3D …
@narfcake I am not quite sure which one… I know it was over $250, that is why I am guestimating after Christmas time, at the rate he is earning money. He and his dad have done some research and I will show him this. I just hope he lets me use it too!
@mikibell @narfcake For a first 3D printer, you should definitely get the Monoprice mini 3D: http://hackaday.com/2016/06/13/review-monoprice-mp-select-mini-3d-printer/ and the many reviews on Monoprice’s site. Also, if you want even more reviews, the model Monoprice’s product is based on is listed in the Hackaday article.
For something smaller now, Monoprice also has a 3D printing pen.
@dashcloud @narfcake
My son bought this printer…
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ya/ref=yo_ii_bia_view?ie=UTF8&ac=bia&reorder_params=B018GZBC3Y%2C110-7677478-3367454
From amazon @ $259 on sale…took a lot of doing to get it here with amazon/ups issues… It is in the process of being set up now!
@mikibell
Funny, but I was just on Amazon looking at this very same printer (Not on sale anymore) before I came over to check on the forum. Also looking at the Prusa I3 MK8.
In the past week, Monoprice has had both the Maker Select 3D Printer v2 (clone of the above) and the Mini on sale for $221 and $180. The Mini has been as low as $160. I want one, but have zero time to play with it.
@Mehrocco_Mole I don’t know much about it… they skipped the mini because of the print area and went with this one. It is easy enough to put together! They have printed an elephant and a butterfly so far to test the machine out. I went to bed while they were playing with the darn thing, but it seems to make them happy. Personally, I am kinda disappointed on the display. Perhaps it is unfair, but I would think the interface could be a bit more advanced. It is a text menu where you have to select to get to the submenu, etc. I would think with the advances in technology, it would at least be a gui.
@dashcloud @narfcake and back the printer goes… for some reason the printer will not print more than one print in a day without doing a factory reset in between each print. The boys have tried everything and sadly, Monoprice tech support has requested that they return the printer. Maybe second printer will be the charm!!
@mikibell correction, they are sending a new control board… seems hubby convinced them he was comfortable replacing said item.
My son just got a 3-D printer for his birthday (HICTOP 3DP-18). I have been looking for an excuse to get one and he turned 16…worked for me. I am not sure I would use the normal PLA for that trigger guard…plan to use ABS or better plastics. PLA is good for general use but is brittle in narrow dimensions.
@tightwad It’s being made with Tech G. Supposed to be real strong.
Find another contract place and call it an supersoaker trigger guard. Fudge a model of a supersaver with that guard
@cranky1950 I actually tried something like that (I didn’t tell them what it was) but they figured it out and got pissed off about it. 20-20 hind sight says I can’t blame them.
@Mehrocco_Mole All you need is the base plug, you can get that by incorporating it different model. Finish it off with a dremel tool. Yeah it gets a little obvious when you put a finished trigger guard with design features that don’t match up with anything on the model.
Off topic, but I’m looking for a reliable pump action shotgun. I’m leaning towards a Remington 870 just based on what I’ve read, but I honestly have very little experience with guns other than rifles for target practice. Anything similar to the 870 that you guys who know what you’re talking about would consider to fill the same niche better?
@Pantheist IMO you have a choice between an 870 and the Mossberg 500. I wouldn’t bother looking any deeper than this. You won’t go wrong with either one. My bro is partial to the Remmy, since he says that the Mossy feels loose - the pump handle kind of twists on the magazine a bit. Due to that untested advice, I just went with the Remmy.
Perfectly happy with it.
I wouldn’t recommend going with a tactical version, especially the kind with no buttstock. But that’s your call.
@G1 @Pantheist
I personally went with the Mossberg 500. The deciding factor for me was a) Recommended by a deputy friend of mine and b) the location of the safety. You also need to consider the configuration depending on what you want to use it for. Gander Mountain has a good deal on a Mossberg 500 hunting shotgun. It comes with two barrels; a 26" Vent Rib Field Barrel for shot & 22" Rifled Deer Barrel for slugs.
@Pantheist Before deciding what shotgun you want you need to ask yourself what you want to do with it.
@G1 @JanaS Thanks. I actually was originally leaning towards the 500, but I have a buddy who was a marine sniper who told me that the 870 was much less likely to jam. Leaning towards the 870 now based on that anecdotal evidence.
@Mehrocco_Mole Planning on getting two barrels- one for turkey hunting, one for hopefully just leaving inside my bedroom door.
Monoprice has some interesting new 3D printers lined up for this year: http://hackaday.com/2017/01/07/ces2017-monoprice-unveils-expanded-line-of-3d-printers/
The $200 printer gets better, and there’s now a $150 model as a step below that one.
Also, they’re putting out resin-based printers, including ones that are marketed to professionals.
There’s some other advances in the market, including a nice metal-printing model: http://hackaday.com/2017/01/10/the-3d-printers-of-ces-2/.
@dashcloud My monoprice printer (maker select v2) Has been great! There are deinitely some issues, but as a 3d printing noob I have been getting good, reproducible results. PPlus I’ve had several mistakes that might have killed a printer, and I’d rather make those with something that only costs ~300
@mehrocco_mole did this ever get printed for you? I can try to print it on my monoprice printer,
