Thanks for the link. I’ve read some other pieces on the expression and have a general interest in and fondness for such things–words about words and their meanings and backgrounds and usage and whatnot.
Fwiw, I did in fact fall in love with it as a result of Kilmer’s brilliant portrayal of Holliday. I don’t pretend to be an expert on the pertinent histories and stories, but as presented, Holliday is far and away my favorite in the film. And the smart-alecky intellectual with cultural knowledge, wisdom and practical skillz is, if not the type I’d (it would seem immodest to) presume to identify with, it is at least what I aspire to.
My perusal of the article confirms my general understanding. There is of course something sinister, deadly and condescending in Holliday’s use of the term. Please trust that I mean none of that; just to say, I’m your guy. It’s worth noting that, again, consistent with my previous understanding, the metaphor began as something positive and honorable, a commitment of fealty. And while Kilmer/Holliday inverts it, the inversion in fact relies on the more wholesome original intent.
He puts himself forth as Johnny Ringo’s man, but somewhat sarcastically and in any case, not in any sense that Johnny should want.
My use here may be goofily hyperbolic, but it is all with good will and no ill feelings.
@sagergen the scroll wheel on my ~2017 model doesn’t work well, lots of skipping around until you get lucky and land on the right temp. This is a good replacement!
@legume0490 Looks like you’re right, though according to the documentation if you use Bluetooth to control it, the app is still free to use:
You can still connect and operate your Anova Precision® Cooker Mini/Lite without a subscription via Bluetooth.

Just as a heads up to anyone who is sensitive to sound, I’d gotten one of these to replace my old one when that died. It made a much more noticeable buzzing sound than the larger versions. Enough that I ended up exchanging it for a bigger one (which didn’t have that problem)

/giphy no worries
this is a good deal. Im buying to gift my parents, but tempted to replace my giant bulky anova from 2015ish with this smaller model.

Doesn’t Anova require a subscription to use the app now unless you had an account before last year?
