another stupid question that's stupid
17recently, the boy’s class made fish in art. dropping him off today, i saw all of them in the hallway next to his class, and noticed something. 22 kids made the art. 18 kids had their fish pointing to the left, and only 4, including my son, had them pointing to the right.
so, if you were to draw a single animal/human/whatever… which way would it point? also, let me know which hand you prefer to write with.
finally, please send me you CC#, exp date, CCV code, and billing address.
well… maybe not that last sentence. unless you’re feeling generous.
note: i made an entire post without saying fuck.
until just then.

Right-handed… probably pointing to the left as I was would likely start with the head and work my way to the right to finish the animal. (similar to writing left-to-right)
This would only apply to drawings, though. If I’m sculpting it out of broken plates or whatever that is, all bets are off.
@medz just paper they colored and then cut into quarter circles.
That is an interesting observation. I wonder what inspired the kids to point their fish one way or another. Were they mirroring the teachers example or something else?
Great art work and my fish would point right.
@tinamarie1974 which hand do you prefer to write with?
if i wasn’t such a drastic difference in the numbers, i wouldn’t have noticed at all.
@carl669 I am right handed, but do quite a bit with my left hand. When I was a kid I was left handed and my kindergarten teacher forced me to write w my right hand. She said it would be better for me in the long run
/image crazy lady
Right handed, pointed left.
Also, fuck, because the fuck count won’t increase on its own.
Probably pointing to the right since I prefer writing left handed
Up, because:
I’m technically right-handed because I write and draw with my right hand, but handle remotes, mousies, and most mechanical things with my left.
@rockblossom
note to self: weirdo outlier. do not include response in statistical analysis.
i kid, i kid.
@carl669 … says the person who came to this forum to find out what was “normal”?
@rockblossom normal, schmormal. i only seek answers.
Well it depends whether you start with right or left pointing triangle pieces, doesn’t it?
@macromeh good point. kind of like when you get an upside down spoon and have to fix it.
@carl669 IKWYM - the other day I was replacing some boards on my fence and I swear like half the nails I pulled out of the bag had the head on the wrong end!
QC FAIL!
@macromeh You needed a pack of front fence nails, but bought a pack of mixed front and back fence nails.
@rockblossom D’oh! That must be it - my bad. Next time I’ll read the safety warnings more carefully.
@macromeh @rockblossom @carl669. I first saw that reference in a Three Stooges bit as Curly was throwing out half the nails while (I think) trying to hang a painting
Moe: What are you doing?
Curly: Dese nails all have the points on the wrong end…
Moe: You dummy [multiple face slaps] those are for THAT wall… [carrying the offending nail to the opposite side of the room…]
That’s still my favorite 3 stooges bit, but one I couldn’t find a video for on-line…
@chienfou @macromeh @rockblossom

@carl669 @macromeh @rockblossom Wow… yep, that’s it but obviously I have some of the details scrambled…
Thanks!
Maybe they just hung it upside down…
FIXED IT
@medz nope. he put secret indicators on the fish to verify correct hanging.
@carl669 Is that why the text above the eyeball is in the correct orientation in my image? I believe it reads “narwhal”.
@carl669 @medz not to mention the sea grass is usually growing upwards… Unless that’s floating seaweed.
@RiotDemon That’s plankton, duh.
@medz if you flip it back to the correct orientation, there’s a little cat face below the eyeball. but, now i see ‘narwhal’ as well. this kid is tricky.
@medz
When did fucking grade school get so fucking advanced with “secret indicator” and fucking shit. When I was in grade school it was slap some fucking glue on some fucking paper and have a nice fucking day.
And bc fuck won’t increase on its own.
@medz @star2236 i blame youtube, Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Trump.
Right handed.
@medz fucking sharks.
@RiotDemon being left-handed, I would draw the same continuous single line fish facing the opposite side
/giphy very curious
@medz @RiotDemon
That is an entirely different NSFW thread.
@chienfou crappy fish drawings for the win!
@medz @mike808 @RiotDemon
/giphy Oh My!
I draw all my animals in profile and they face to the left. I am right handed. I never thought about this until now. And now I wish I hadn’t
@allergycheryl i didn’t think about this either until i saw it. and now i don’t really know what to make of it.
/image fish drawing
@medz i wish, i wish, you’d gif this fish.
@carl669 Why did you make me do this?!
@medz possibly because you’re hella good at it.
@carl669 I recently helped my kid create a gif IRL using a lego kit we got from woot. We made a movie version with audio track and adjusted frame rates too, but it’s not appropriate for public showings.
It is my dream that she’ll grow up to achieve a relative level of fame as a master gif maker on a mediocre website.
@medz i thoroughly enjoyed the story in this gif. damn banana peels are a public menace.
my son loves legos and i think he’d get a kick out of doing something similar. you partial to any app/program in particular for gif making/editing? i recently got a fairly simple gif making app on my phone, but so far its features seem pretty limited.
@carl669 GIMP is my go to for most things, but I do have a GIF Maker-Editor app on my phone that is good for quick video to GIF conversions. (lots of ads, though) The gif above was just made using Google photos via the web browser from the still pics we took. (edit: fish gif was done in GIMP) For the video with narration, special effects, and such we used some software I got on woot: Corel VideoStudio X9 which is already outdated, but seems to have a lot of features to play with. Just getting my feet wet with it. Prior to that, it was Windows Movie Maker and some kind of Roxio software which no longer works.
So, no…I wouldn’t say I’m really partial to anything now that I think about it.
@medz fair enough. i’ve got GIMP, but mostly use it for photo editing. now i’ll have to play around with making gifs in it. soon, i’ll hope to be as good as you. so… like maybe a few years or so.
@carl669 @medz [Many] years ago I created a ‘flip-book’ of a similar scene.
Car came from the vanishing point, hit something (tree?) and ejected the driver. Ambulance approached from one side of the page, picked up the victim and then left off the other side.
What can I say… it was a long book with lots of pages…
@chienfou @medz I get bored like that as well. like this time:
@carl669 @medz Nice! Unfortunately my ‘oeuvre’ was penned before
youtube,the interweb,digital video,personal computers, Oh hell a long long time ago…It has to do with whether your left or right brained. For example, left-brain people are more organized and systematic. Right-brain people are more creative and intuitive. There’s a test you can take online.
@star2236 so which points which way?
@tinamarie1974
I don’t know I’m not a psychologist, that’s my brothers department. I’ve just taken a lot of psychology classes and remember reading about it. If YOU would like to know YOU can look more into it.
@star2236 nah, I just figured if you knew, you could share
It’s a pretty cool looking fish, I’d definitely hang it.
@star2236 agreed. If @carl669 said it was hanging in a museum, I would have believed him.
Right. Right hand.
/image right hand fish
Right handed and that fucker is swimming to the right.
I’m right-handed and the figure would be pointing to the left. No conscious reason, but that is an almost absolute certainty.
left handed drawing fish facing right.
WTF is wrong with me?
@chienfou ain’t nothing wrong you!
BTW awesome job on the fish by your kid. I will have to get my daughter to look at this thread. She teaches art to young kids and this is a great idea.
@chienfou he loves art. my cousin got him an art kit and i’d say it’s one of the top things that gets used out of all his other stuff.
This has to do with learning to read and write left-to-right and our brains hard-wired to recognize faces (the head) for friend/foe/threat recognition.
So we draw the first part of the animal or thing we are visualizing so that we read the most important/recognizable part first.
Hence, head (of thing) on the left.
@mike808 Thank you that entry from the “making shit up on-the-fly encyclopedia.”
What about the right-facing fish?
@therealjrn It means you’re an ass for brains.
@mike808 Damn Mike. That was rather hostile. Are you going to go to @carl669 son’s class and tell them that? SMH
Just because you don’t understand something is no reason to attack others.
@mike808 @therealjrn my main issue here is that @mike808 didn’t answer the original question and now i have one less data point.
@carl669 @mike808 Oh, that’s fucked up Carl.
@carl669
I answered the question as to why the dominant form is head-on-the-left.
Christianity also likely helped this with the Ichthys symbol specifically being a head-on-the-left form - and that is likely the way it is for the reasons I stated.
Why your child made a head-on-the-right form, who knows. Why are some people left-handed? Why is the universe made of all matter and not equal parts of anti-matter? Why are all biological organic chemistry molecules also right-handed and don’t interact with their left-handed mirror counterparts?
I think facing right. I am right handed for most things.
I have zero creativity. I was the kid who drew the plain house with a tree and sun when tod to use my imagination.
So I am looking at the and this is the only one I see facing right. Looked quickly so I may have missed one but interesting.
Right handed, facing left.
Unless I was drawing two fish talking to each other.
But then I would still have the one on the left speak first.
The one facing right.
@stolicat those fish look oddly familiar.
The more I look at it, the more they look like weird 8s.
@RiotDemon I thought that through their clean lines and iconic imagery they cleanly represented the human sigelian (made that word up) concept of “fish”, lent themselves to the simple cartoon expression of communication and maintained a graphic continuity to early posts in the thread.
And it was late and they were easy to copy and reflect because of the flat background. And I like blue. Here is a hastily added post-infringement credit:
Fish Iconery by @RiotDemon 2020.
@stolicat
/giphy lol
@RiotDemon @stolicat
you even invoked some Catholic iconography…
Right-handed. This is the fish image I would try to draw:
/image sorry charlie
Right-handed - my animals naturally face left. My son is left-handed and his animals generally face right. But, I show him how to draw things by drawing upside down on the same page that he’s using. So my upside down animals face to My left, he copies them right side up facing to His right…and now I’m wondering if I can draw upside-down animals facing the wrong way so he can copy them the right way and how @carl669 has added unnecessary complication to my life. Fuck.
@Nate311
@carl669
I would wonder which way the teacher had her example fish facing. My guess would be that it was facing left. So your kid is one of a few that didn’t just straight up copy it.
I would draw it with a dead-on rock stare, like you just challenged it to a battle of wills.
@PocketBrain i don’t know why, but i initially read this as a “…battle of willis”. and i was like “Bruce or the one from different strokes?”
@carl669 WTH are you talking about?
@carl669 @PocketBrain
If there is a Willis, there is a way.
@carl669 @mike808 @PocketBrain
/giphy whatchu talkin bout willis
@carl669 @mike808 @PocketBrain @therealjrn
and then I read that as a battle of willies and thought “oh shit here we go with the NSFW again”
(though I admit I am posting this from work…)
@chienfou @mike808 @PocketBrain @therealjrn what’s NSFW about Willie’s?
@carl669 @mike808 @PocketBrain @therealjrn try typing in ‘show me your willy’ and see what you get…
@carl669 @chienfou @mike808 @PocketBrain
Challenge accepted.
/giphy 'show me your willy’
@carl669 @chienfou @PocketBrain @therealjrn
OK.
@carl669 @mike808 @PocketBrain @therealjrn yep, had one of those in Colorado back in the day. (1955 with ambulance doors…)
@carl669 @chienfou @mike808 @PocketBrain @therealjrn
/youtube Brazil won’t look at your willy
I’m right handed and I would my fish would be facing right.
Slightly related, I watched my sister trying to teach her son to tie his shoe and realized that we tie differently. For the last part where you put the second lace around the loop she goes around the front first and I go around the back. We were taught by the same person and are both right handed. I was very confused to realize this.
I’m a lefty and my fish would be swimming to the right.
When I first read this I was thinking it’s because the majority of the kids are most probably right handed. The comment about left brain, right brain sounds familiar from my schooling.
I’d be willing to bet it really is down to the “handedness” of the kids…
my bestie and i are both huge nerds ( a shock, I know…)
I’m a Righty, he’s a Lefty.
several times I’ve noticed his action figures have their weapons in their left hands, where mine are in their right.
neither of us does this consciously.
