I can deal with the head/sinus allergy symptoms, it’s being allergic to the cold (and ice on my skin) that sucks for me! Mine isn’t so severe that I need to move to a warmer climate, hives is the worst thing that’s happened so far. I sure will be thrilled to have warmer weather back!
@AuntMean67@Lynnerizer
I start sneezing every time my head gets cold and my whole respiratory thing allergies and cold and what have you are way worse in the winter
But our winters are pretty mild and I never have that much of a chance to acclimate so I don’t know if I could adapt to the north or not
@AuntMean67@f001
Oh wow, a sister (you) is now the closest i’ve gotten to knowing anyone else who’s got urticaria. She must have it pretty bad for her Dr to have told her to move. My sister was actually with me the first time my entire body was effected. Her and her college girlfriends were there for my “freak show” of my entire body being covered with hives after jumping in the cold ocean. (I’m the 4 year younger brat, well back then I was the brat, i’m STILL 4 years younger) I’ll never forget that day OR what I looked and felt like!
I’m curious, do you know how old she was when it started? Mine started around 12/13 years old and I always thought maybe puberty had something to do with it, like that’s what sparked it.
@f001@Lynnerizer She was in college so maybe 19 or 20? She was a travelling nurse and did great in Arizona where she lived for about 4 years. But she’s single and now takes care of our parents as well as being an ICU nurse and lives here in the snow belt of the Great Lakes not far from me. It’s kind of sad but funny. She’s covered in hives most of the winter and I’m covered in hives during all the plant seasons. (like cottonwoods and ragweed). She feels best in the south, I feel best in the north. And we’re the closest sisters of the 6 of us girls. She has respiratory issues with it too. When my parents die she’s going to move to someplace like North Carolina. She can visit me in summer and I’ll visit her in winter. Works all round then.
I’m really allergic to dogs (among horrible seasonal allergies too) and my fucking brother has been bringing his dogs over to my dads while he spends the night. Last time I came home from there I could barely breath and must have touched something dog bc my face started breaking out really bad. Dogs are really bad for me.
@Star2236 That stinks! While i’ve always been allergic to cats and dogs (animal fur) I thank my lucky stars that the symptoms have lightened up over the years. Thank goodness my mom bought us a dog that had hair and not fur. It would’ve been misrable not having a dog when I was growing up. Hildagard/Hildi was a miniature dachshund, she was the best! These days, being the “cat snob” that I am, I got a himalayan cat that happened to have the world’s most thickest, fluffiest fur ever. Being SO full and thick he needs brushing/combing twice a day. My allergies have gotten SO much better that I only get stuffed up a little when he’s on my lap. When it’s not tolerable Benadryl does the trick!
@Lynnerizer@Star2236 you are not allergic to fur its the protein found in cat/dog saliva and urine. You are probably allergic to horses as well because the protein structure is very similar. Can d1 and Fel d1. Every animal secrets a different amount of this protein. When they pee or lick their fur, the saliva/urine sticks to the fur. It dries and will eventually flake off and become airborne. You breathe it, your body misidentifies the protein as a germ and the warfare starts. So, to stop the reaction you have to deal with the protein. The most effective way is to denature the protein. There are products like Allerpet that you put on the pet or ADS or ADMS or other tannic acid or chlorine dioxide products you can spray where the pet sits or sleeps that will denature the protein. They are highly effective on pets and work on the Der f1 (farinae dust mite) protein as well. Don’t believe me? Read Allergy Free Living :o)
@allergycheryl@Lynnerizer
I believe you, I’ve been told that before but it’s my brothers or my moms dogs so there’s only so much I can do. Especially when my brother brings his dogs over to my dads house and I have no idea where they’ve been or I’m waking into my moms house with her dogs.
@allergycheryl
That’s very interesting and I too would take your word for it as your username speaks volumes! I’ve also been told it’s the dander that i’m allergic to and not the fur. I’m wondering if the dried up saliva is actually the dander? Again, it’s extremely interesting! I remember being a little girl and having this huge brick full of needles injected into my arm all at once to see what I was allergic to, it was awful! Mosquito bites was/is one of my worst allergies, I get a humongous welt instead of a tiny bump when i’ve been bitten. One time I even passed out after getting bit over and over again when I sat in or on a mosquito nest in the woods. NOT a good memory! Lol
@Lynnerizer so dander is the name for shed animal skin. The saliva sticks to the skin and then when the skin becomes dander as it flakes off, you inhale the dander particle. it’s not actually the epithelial cell but the protein that has adhered to the cell. Many creatures that feed on blood inject an anticoagulant with proteins that cause allergic reactions. When you react to the mosquito, it’s this anticoagulant. These days, the scratch or skin challenge test is still used, but there are also blood tests that can be performed to identify your specific enemies when it comes to allergies.
@allergycheryl
How on earth do you know all this interesting information? I can see by your username you came into the game already knowing. Are allergies your business/job or just a hobby, maybe you just suffer with many different types of allergies? I’m intrigued!
@Lynnerizer Yes, I have allergies that are pretty bad if I don’t keep them in check - but I don’t let them control my life - I control them - and for over 20 years allergies were my business (well I should stay controlling allergies LOL - not creating them
Aleve Sinus +D (decongestant for the pervs lol) is my best friend this time of year. Also, using a Neti pot helps tremendously, once you get used to it.
Do you use your own distilled water and salt mix that you make up at the time or do you use song remix spray that you get at the drugstore in a sealed bottle?
I tried the Celine rinses that are sealed bottles I got at Walmart they were cheap but they seemed a little too salty to me
In the past I used to nanny pot and mix it myself with distilled water and just I guess table salt and that was OK I should probably start that up again
@f00l@macromeh I have made my own distilled water but I usually just buy a gallon at the store. And I buy the NeilMed saline packets just because it’s easy. Usually use one packet, sometimes two if the allergies are really bad.
@f00l@railek I use the NeilMed saline packets (from Costco), but just boil tap water and then let it cool to a comfortable temperature (we have excellent well water with no chlorine/chemicals and only a small trace of minerals).
@railek I’m usually a Claritin D based lifeform this time of year. It’s the Bradford pear trees that get me. Everyone says that these only live 25 years or so. Popular with suburban subdivision builders because they grow fast and provide good shade. But these trees are about 35 years old. I think they are still living just to torture me.
I’m starting to think I’m becoming allergic to everything. My right eye is currently red and feels like there is sand in it (I haven’t been around sand). I’ve put allergy eye drops in it, it helps for about 5 seconds. Luckliy the eye only occasionally does this. But it can last for days and is pretty miserable.
@f00l It seems to be mainly allergy related. Especially if I don’t wash my hands after touching my guinea pigs. Last year the eye doctor recommended a certain type of eye drop, but the stuff burns. I should have a check up next month, and I will bring it up, because it is happening more often. Getting older sucks.
Plus everyone around you is wondering if you’ve got Covid, probably.
@Kyeh
Yeah

@Lynnerizer
I’m undecided on if I’m allergic to cold.
Ick anyway.
The worst is that allergies set off sinus infections that are hard to get rid of.
@Lynnerizer My sister has this problem too. Except she’s been advised to move south.
Like the rest of the pussies in my family they don’t like too much heat or too much cold. Only one sister and I could live in the cold forever.

@Star2236
I love dogs so would hate being allergic to them.
But my sympathies. Not being able to breathe properly is pretty bad
@Star2236 That stinks! While i’ve always been allergic to cats and dogs (animal fur) I thank my lucky stars that the symptoms have lightened up over the years.
