Advent calendars
13Aldi Advent calendars are coming out this coming Wednesday, November 2nd. Most years, wine and beer calendars sell out on the first day, cheese calendars and the better chocolate ones (truffle and luxury) rarely last past the next day. Last year was weird because the shipments were delayed and scrambled so some stores had them 1-2 weeks later, but don’t count on it.
I’ve seen wine and beer calendars at Costco already.

Hah! I saw “advent calendars” and immediately thought “Aldi”.
The cheese one is now a tradition for me and my dogs. My little girl has never had a winter when we didn’t sample at least 2 (they’re very clearly non-Christian, we have 2 months of Advent and then it’s spring).
Hm. This may be hard to explain to the dog sitter…
My wife brought this home yesterday. She’s a keeper
@capnjb I thought the pot said Nov 2. This is the first I have ever heard of this.
Is it all Aldi’s or just localized ones?
@uvassassin I think this came from Costco.
@capnjb @uvassassin
Yep, Costco. …Bought the same one for my son-in-law
@capnjb
Definitely Costco. Hopefully you like German lagers because there’s a lot of them in that one! Google translate came up with “Old Bavarian Hell” for one of them (I’m pretty sure it was confused by helles though)
@guyfromhawthorn I do like them very much! When I used to be super into brewing, I’d occasionally do a German Pils. I’d get RO water and build it to match the profile of the water in Munich and then do a 48-degree ferment for at least a month. They are very difficult to brew as there is nowhere for mistakes to hide. But when you get it right, it’s pretty fantastic
@guyfromhawthorn Oh, and cheers!
@capnjb Stopped at Costco today and found they also have a cheese Advent calendar. Its actually a ‘12 days’ calendar, 12 4-5 ounce pieces of cheese (so much larger than the 24 pieces in the Aldi cheese calendar). $55 though.
I’m waiting for my funko pop marvel calendar to come and then I’m set. No they’re not all for me.
@sammydog01
But … why are they not all for you?
@sammydog01 Target has come cute funko pop and Lego advent calendars, if you haven’t checked them out already. Last year I got the Lindt calendar and was amazed at how quickly there were only two days until Christmas
@sammydog01
@heartny I get emails from a company called Charles and Marie, and they have this listed:
Pretty expensive, but I thought you’d like to see it, at least.
https://charlesandmarie.de/en/products/ballon-d-og-holz-balloon-dog-eiche-dunkel-jakob-burgso-boyhood
@Kyeh Cute! Thanks for sharing. A bit hard for me to read, but I get the idea. I would like to get a balloon dog made of wood for my collection someday.
@f00l Gotta share. The jam is all mine though.
@f00l @sammydog01 Ive got two of those jam calendars this year!!!
@f00l @tinamarie1974 I’m still finishing up my second calendar from last year- made a loaf of bread and put white nectarine-lemon verbena on it tonight.
The Aldi Truffle calendars are highly recommended as well as the ‘Luxury’ calendars which open up in a somewhat decorative fashion. In previous years they have had the ‘Premium’ calendars also, sort of between the little kids size and the Truffles, but I don’t see them on the page this year.
My wife said no wine calendar this year so I’m going to aim for cheese, truffle, and luxury calendars as gifts (and a couple to stay at home). Going to be an expensive run even without the wine calendar. But I won’t feel the need to get in line before they open like I have the last several years.
We tried an Aldi beer calendar a couple of years ago but it was mostly English and Irish beers and wasn’t liked as much as the mostly German Costco beer calendar that year. We’ll see at the store this year.
I have not seen the Aldi Irish Creme ‘calendar’ advertised yet; that is a “12 Days of Christmas” calendar and does not usually show up til late November. We have really enjoyed that one the last several years.

I’m still waiting for an advent calendar based on this:
Hey Disney - it’s yours, but only if I get 10% of the gross …
@stolicat You mean like this?
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Disney-Parks-Star-Wars-Droid-Factory-Christmas-Advent-Calendar-New-with-Box/1499328629
@sammydog01 @stolicat
@Kyeh @sammydog01 Wow - I guess everything already exists somewhere …
Not quite the design I had in mind (I had pictured little windows that opened on the outside of the crawler) but still pretty cool (and pricey - $105!) as you get to build five little droids over the course of the month …
@Kyeh @sammydog01 @stolicat
I’m reaching out for this one with my feelings …”
@Kyeh @stolicat $69 from Disney but they’re not even Legos.
Thanks for the heads up. I missed out on the cheese calendar last year. I got the cat treats one for my cats but they ended up not liking the treats and the feral cat got them.
You say advent calendars… this is where my mind goes…
(2019)
(2020)
(2021)
just for clarity, they shoot all 24 days in one sitting, but brake them up and release each day/weekly/ i forget, then on Christmas, they drop the full video. so you get 24 days of a few minutes a day of watching them get progressively drunker.
@earlyre Those are fantastic.
Thank you for the heads up!
I got to Aldi a few minutes after they opened and already the store was swarmed with customers. The cheese calendar was already sold out! One customer said that they only had one case. But I did pick up a Star Wars Lego, the premium chocolate and truffle calendars. I was standing in line and talking to the lady in front of me (who had a coveted cheese calendar in her cart ). I asked her if the cheese ones were good since I have never been able to get one. She said yes and that she her husband fight over it. It gets to be my turn in line and I see a cheese calendar on the cashier’s side table. I asked if it was available. He said yes! So it was mine!! He explained that there was a limit of one per customer for some of the calendars since they don’t get many. So one person’s greediness is my reward! Huzzah!
@ironcheftoni Awesome! But I was greedy. Got to the store about 10:30 and they still had some of everything in stock except the make a gnome one. The only limits were on beer, wine, and the gnome one so I got 4 cheeses (two already handed out to friends at work) and they still had two full cases in the display fridge. So got four each of the the luxury chocolates, and the premium/truffles (used to be two separate calendars, this year they combined them), one hot sauce calendar for work, three of the kiddy calendars. Nearly all of these are gifts; we’ll keep one cheese, one truffle and one luxury for ourselves. If a twelve-days Irish Creme calendar is released we’ll get one of those also.
I also dropped all the leftover halloween candy at work. This Aldi also had the Hostess halloween cupcakes marked down to $0.89/box so I bought a bunch to drop off at work, and the Screamin’ Sicilian pepperoni pizzas marked down to $2.99, so I bought several. Both of these (save one cupcake I snagged) are going to work since my wife reserves her gluten allowance for a really great take-out pizza place nearby, but for frozen, Screamin Sicilian is about as good as it gets. Everyone was pissed about the huge bowl of candy and the cupcakes (as they dug in) but the pizzas more than made up for it
POPSOCKETS! SPA KITS! POLLY POCKETS! AWESOME!
@duodec I guess it varies from store to store. My Aldi is in one of the lower income areas of town so I’m sure they stock it based upon demographics. When I left the store, the beer, wine and cheese calendars had already sold out but they had plenty of the lower priced chocolate calendars. I looked at the candle calendar but could justify the cost since I still have Bath&Body Works candles from the last sale. I might venture out to the others near me tonight. Good to know about the pizzas. The black friday shopping item this year is going to be a new refrigerator and one with a bigger freezer.(ie not side by side). So I’ll be able to keep more stuff like pizzas on hand.
@ironcheftoni Went back this evening after picking up lottery tickets; drive right by to (thats my story and I’m sticking to it). They still had everything in stock including the gnome kit so I guess they had more in back or got another truck. Running low on beer and wine but still there. I could not resist; got two more luxury chocolate, two more premium truffles, and one more cheese calendar so we could open it now and dig out our favorites.
They also had some spiced cranberry spread I’m looking forward to trying on buttered toast or English muffins.
I bought the last four Hostess Halloween cupcake boxes (got marked down again to $0.49 per box) and looked at the last two Screamin Sicilian pepperoni pizzas (went up to $3.99, still a great price) but I just can’t fit them in our freezers. My biggest wish for the next appliance purchase is another freezer or replacing our current 7 cubic foot chest with a larger (at least 14cf and I want larger).
I fully expect meat prices to go up even more over the next year and want to fill a freezer with meat now (and some pizzas!)
@ironcheftoni Stopped again today. My local store STILL had every calendar except the hot sauce calendar, and they had no gnome kits left. Beer, wine, cheese, all still available though quantities were low.
The checker said that day one was swamped but that overall they’re not selling as fast as previous years; likely that’s at least partly due to all the competition now, and the current economy.
@duodec I agree with the economy. I am reducing my holiday spending this year.
@ironcheftoni Unfortunately same here. I don’t think either of our jobs is in danger, but all the other bad factors do weigh in…
Costco ‘locally’ has Lego advent calendars in three themes:
Star Wars - Harry Potter - Guardians of the Galaxy for 34.99 each.
@chienfou Same marques at Aldi $39.99, Harry Potter box looks the same but Star Wars is different, no pic of Marvel handy. Still likely the same or nearly. Aldi can’t beat Costco on more general stuff I guess.
@duodec
It’s good to know. I live about 35-40 minutes from the closest Aldi/Costco which are less than a mile apart. Don’t go in to “the big city” too often so not there for the Aldi calendar launch today (got my lego ones (for my daughter in Nashville) last Sunday when I made over 20 stops in a 6 hour visit to the city…)
Just hit my Aldi, they had all the calendars!!! And the GNOMES, OMG!!! I spent SO MUCH $$$
@tinamarie1974
@duodec I now have a small army
@duodec @tinamarie1974
Those are really cute!
@tinamarie1974
happiness!
@duodec @tinamarie1974 They had the gnome advent calendar for half price so I bought one. Today I’m supposed to make a gingerbread house to decorate. HAHAHAHAHA. No.
@sammydog01 @tinamarie1974 My Aldis have had gingerbread house kits in stock the last week or so. I think they still had gnomes, but the other calendars (except for the Hanukkah and the cheap chocolate ones) were finally sold out. Took a LONG time this year to sell out.
Also, the rare, delicious, only available once a year Cranberry-Orange Dessert Bread is supposed to be out this Wednesday, 12/7. Going to stock up and even freeze a couple of loaves.
@duodec @tinamarie1974 Sounds good. Do I have to be there when the doors open or will it be around for a while?
@sammydog01 @tinamarie1974 This year is weird. Last year my close store did not get many and sold out within a day but the next store over had a few loaves a week later. I found out last year they are in different ‘districts’ and get shipments from different warehouses so that might be part of it.
@sammydog01 @tinamarie1974
Cranberry Orange and Gingerbread dessert breads
Toasted with Kerrygold or other premium butter on it… omg.
They also have a 12 day chocolate calendar coming out. Still holding out hope for the 12 days irish cream calendars they had the last couple of years too.
@duodec @tinamarie1974 Please ping me if you hear about the Irish cream ones? That sounds good.
@sammydog01 @tinamarie1974 Will do. But if they are not out next week (will show up in ‘upcoming’ after tomorrow) then they may not be happening this year.
When looking for specific seasonal items you really have to look at the phone app or website deals lists. A lot of items do not show up in their paper ads (the bread doesn’t for example).
@duodec @sammydog01 well now I am hungry. That all sounds sooooo delicious!!!
@duodec @sammydog01 @tinamarie1974
And I have serious Aldi envy.
@duodec @Kyeh @sammydog01 no Aldi nearby???
@duodec @sammydog01 @tinamarie1974 None in my whole state!
@duodec @Kyeh @sammydog01 O.M.G.
@Kyeh @sammydog01 @tinamarie1974 None of the Aldi’s near me got the orange cranberry bread on Wednesday. I’ve been checking daily, they say might be by the weekend, or might not be till next week but they are expecting to get it still.
@Kyeh @sammydog01 @tinamarie1974
So the cranberry orange dessert bread finally showed up last Wednesday, two weeks late. I was able to pick up enough loaves to meet local demand and freeze a couple for later in the year, but they all sold out within a couple of days. Some gingerbread dessert bread still out there, and today an apple strudel dessert bread showed up.
Unexpected: first time ever seen leftover Advent calendars. Wine calendars at $9.99, craft calendars at $12 at a nearby aldi. I have a couple chocolate calendars still that I’ll break down and make some candy dishes with for work. My wife wants them out of the house asap
As far as I know they did not come out with an Irish Cream 12-days calendar this year. They did have large bottle apple-caramel flavored Irish Cream holiday flavor, as well as really nice blueberry and cherry mulled wines in larger bottles.
@duodec @Kyeh @sammydog01 not sure about my aldi, Ive not been up there since spending about $300 on advent calendars and gnomes
I need to sneak up there, but @Charliedoggo gets upset when I have to put him in his crate. Sigh…
@duodec @Kyeh @sammydog01 @tinamarie1974 NOT THE JAIL!!!Come in mom I am a good boy, unless there are napkins or coffee filters I can grab and shread!!!
If you have a Lidl store in your area, they have a lot of nice Advent calendars too.

Ashens and Nerd Cubed are doing their advent calendar thing again. Except they both made calendars. And Nerd Cubed’s wife is an exceptionally talented painter.
Really enjoying the cheese calendar. Also a week before thanksgiving, I went to another Aldi and they had tons of calendars still in stock including the cheese one so I got one for my sister, and the big Belgian chocolate and the cat treats calendars for myself and elder calico kitty. They have better quality cat treats this year. Missy approves.
