I am typing on this machine right now. I cannot say enough good things about it. The screen is not the best, but this is an absolute workhorse. It is also very sturdy, and the battery lasts forever. GET THIS!!!
@conandlibrarian I came to say the same! I got it at full price and the thing rocks, I use it for taking notes in class or just casual browsing. And if thats what youre after, this machine is a solid 9/10
Our school offers students to use chromebooks and laptops while on campus, and some students can take home chrome books or laptops should they need them and if they qualify. I only use them on campus but yeah I'm pretty familiar with it. Its a decent OS, but it cant run like anything because most computers are kind of weak as well
This model is apparently the one for Costco. The Acer webpage currently says this model is 1920x1080 "IPS," but the Costco website product details say 1366x768 screen. Costco rep on FB said that Acer said that the Acer website 1080P description is wrong. (Certainly its not the first time.)
@mnehme1 great job - we are finding out how the inconceivable could be happening and adjusting our plans for world domination. This will presumably include correcting our spec confusion and lowering the price retroactively for all buyers.
@snapster The Acer site shows CB5-571-C09S as being the IPS, full HD (32GB SSD, 4GB RAM) one. It's amazing how the prices are compressed at the bottom of the market a la the Acer Store on Ebay.
I have outfitted 10 classrooms in a small school with Chromebooks (1-to-1) over the past two years. Nine classrooms have refurbished Acers and they have been holding up well.
I'll continue to be patient about your progress in world domination.
@snapster The price adjustment is great. You should have heard me trying to explain to someone this morning about one item, one day, one price, and then my cached page showed last night's price, and I refreshed. @lotsofgoats has a lot of 'splaining to do.
@OldCatLady Oh, how clever. It's actually the fault of @sammydog01, who is subgoat today. This is proof that @lotsofgoats knew about this cf in advance, thus the substitution scheme. Clever.
Well wound up with two of the Toshiba ones from here. Like the idea of the bigger screen, but not if the lower resolution and slower processor. Still see these selling out by 9am EST though
Refurb: Better than used (as anything fried is replaced) and cheaper than new.. I ain't afraid of refurb but new prices make me shiver and straight used? Forget it..!!
@sctthrrmn Yes. Only TVs do 1080i. There's no real need to interlace video nowadays; it's largely just a holdover from the very early days of TV. Computer monitors are always progressive unless otherwise specified.
No matter how good a product is, some percentage of units will be returned to stores. People buy things they regret.
I saw this first-hand tonight. My brother bought himself a new TV on Cyber Monday. I convinced him he should go with a slightly smaller TV that had a better-rated panel. He eventually decided he wanted to go bigger (even bigger than he'd originally planned) and waited to see if any TVs went on sale for the Super Bowl. Tonight I helped him return the TV to Walmart thanks to their 90-day return policy. He was so impressed with that he would've bought his new choice there, but they don't sell it. Still, someone will get the TV as a refurb and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's a win-win for everyone except Walmart, though they've definitely improved their standing in our eyes. As my brother pointed out, he got to use a 4K TV for free for 2 months!
@jqubed Back in the day, the Dell Outlet had a category called Previously Ordered New. What PON meant was, "this unit was shipped to a customer but was returned with the user agreement screen not clicked on yet". Usually this meant the unit was never powered on and probably never even unpacked, although technically it could have been powered on and then right back off (the agreement is the very first thing that comes up on the first boot).
I got some really sweet deals on laptops with all the bells and whistles buying out of the PON listings. You had to decide what you wanted, wait for it to show up, and jump on it when it did.
Or you could go to Samsung's site and get a new chromebook for $199.00(spec's smaller but is more than enough) or even yet get a 28"Samsung tv for $199.00. Last wk the chromebook was $149.00. Can I get a MEHMEN!!!
I'm thinking about getting one of these for my 9 year old. She's used to them as they use them at school. Is the Acer good or should I wait for the Toshiba? Or something else?
@jjsesler the Toshiba's have a much better screen. I prefer the models that have a sim card slot. Chromebooks are unusable without some kind of internet. 200mb cell data is useful in that regard.
@nostrom0 Thanks! Being connected isn't much an issue right now. Wifi at home and if we're out, I'm lucky enough to still have unlimited data on my cell, I'll just connect her to that. Didn't think about USB or memory card usage... That's good to consider.
@snapster It's nice to know there are real people behind all these deals rather than an infallible computer churning out perfect prices. I can hear it around the Meh. Com dinner tables... "you won't believe what happened at work today"
ATTENTION: thanks to some astute (and pesky) reports that our price had been beaten and the screen resolution was unclear we have adjusted wording on the feature bullet and we are lowering the price. Previous suckers will have lower price retroactively applied and notice confirming screen resolution that was posted in the spec area.
@snapster Awesome. I checked when I woke this morning and (thought I) saw $200. When I got to work it was $155 and just assumed I was pre-coffee. Instant 23% discount? You guys rock.
@russellwilde@ACraigL I recommend using a SD card if you plan for it to be permanent storage. a USB drive sticks out the side and could easily snag on things, while an SD card would not. though that is assuming you use your chrome book in a way where you move it around or take it on the go and it doesn't simply sit at a desk and doesn't move.
Can anyone comment on the quality of the 720p screen? The "300+ reviews on Amazon" that the meh write-up refers to are based on the 1080p screen. Also, Google searches just returns reviews from tech sites that only received the 1080p version.
I'm pretty interested in this deal, and the lack of 1080p isn't a deal breaker for me since I'd be mainly using this device for surfing and office-type work; in fact, would text naturally appear larger on a 720p screen?
@AwRy108 yes for program list and buttons; however any office type software and web browser allows you to change the size the content it is displaying to be bigger. so on any screen i could zoom in far enough to make the words i an typing up or reading while surfing as big as on any other screen. its just more crisp around the edges with the better resolution.
@upbeatanime ugh, I'm really torn by this deal. The 1080p version of this exact same Chromebook costs over twice as much; but I can decide if the jump from 720p to 1080p is really worth the additional $160+ dollars.
@upbeatanime I too am interested. I paid the $200 on impulse under the impression that this was 1080p. Now I am not so sure I still want it even with it being 45 bucks cheaper. I have been googling around too and can Only find reviews of the 1080p
@captaincats yeah, all the reviews are for the 1080p IPS; whereas the one we're considering is a 720p TN, which means it has a lower resolution AND limited viewing angles. BUT IT'S ONLY $155!?!
@AwRy108 Hopefully this will give you an idea. My camera kind of catches some of the pixels and makes it look worse than it is, but for text and surfing it should work great.
@snapster Starred for your honesty, i know it's one of the known refreshing things about the way Meh does business, but I just wanted to thank you again.
@djslack hey thanks I'm in it for the stars! it helps knowing both of these deals are under wholesale offers for the product in bulk.
In fact, @captaincats I just noticed that on that eBay deal you can now see "15 sold" and then below "more than 74% sold" so they appear to only have 5 left by my math.
@snapster@captaincats Your choice may depend on whether not not you wear bifocals (i.e. have old eyes). I have one of the 13" 1080 models and I find it hard to see objects on it.
(Only three left on that eBay deal now. You don't even have to do math - enter a quantity and ebay will tell you to enter a lower number if you're high.)
I had a conversation with my grandfather about meh a while back after the Toshiba crome books. Turns out he is addicted to meh now and bought me one of these acers... Thank you meh in a round a bout way you got me an Acer today
That worked. My order number renders a rather startling mental picture: it's "abundantly-ardent-heron" I see a 14th Century Japanese woodcut of a three legged bird wading among the cattails....
@RedOx I don't know, I find 4 years of support before EOL to be abysmal, regardless of how cheap it is. Windows 7 also has EOL in 2020, and its devices have had a long headstart.
I'm on the fence about getting this to play around with, I haven't been able to figure out if you can put another browser on it or if you are stuck using chrome.
@Froggy if you leave chromeOS on (that is if you don't install some linux variant, which I am not sure about on this model) you will be using chrome... that's the point.
@Froggy 4 years on something I view as a $150 web toy is acceptable to me. I'm not doing rocket surgery with the thing and chances are by 2020 I'll have thrown some alternate OS / broke the thing. If it remains a fairly malware proof platform, I'll likely let my 6yo use it extensively (with appropriate web filters :) )
Besides, by 2020, we'll have flying cars and ocular implanted computing, this thing will just be a fairly light doorstop. (I'd say paperweight but papers will be outlawed by 2019)
@RedOx The nice part for long term support is that all supported Chromebooks, regardless of how old they are, will run the latest Chrome OS. Not having enough memory makes some older devices difficult to use, though.
I BROKE DOWN... justified this by getting it for my octogenarian parents, and oh yea, I got one for myself for troubleshooting assistance - I see some buyer's remorse coming on in the morning...
FYI: Lost good concert seats cause chromebook don't give a fuck about ticketmaster. seconds count. fired up chromebook early and made sure I was first in line online when tickets went on sale. ticketmaster site says no tickets available. try a few more times, same thing. try buying a single ticket, no go. after 10 min, decide to try work computer (win 7). now it works but only single tickets are left. I get 4 spread around the stadium using 4 separate transactions. 4 sets of service charges, etc. try chromebook again to see if it works, no dice. try changing plugin settings and stuff, no dice. singles still available in windows browser.
thanks chromebook.
tldr: don't use chromebook for mission critical if you want your family to love you.
@miko1 That sounds like a misunderstanding of how the TicketMaster site works. TM doesn't care if you're using Chrome OS or vice versa, but allows promoters to withhold all tickets and release them in batches. It doesn't always count if you're "first in line" and may actually penalise if you load the event page before tickets are available.

Mehbe at $99 :)
@thismyusername You're generous. I was going to say $30.
Oh this deal doesn't compute...well maybe it does after all.
@AttyVette Mehbe it will click for you if you buy this deal. Ooh, shiny. Oh, wait, refurb. Not so shiny.
FIRST
dammit
good deal.
I was gonna say "oh well"....but instead, I'll say "meh".
Decent
I am typing on this machine right now. I cannot say enough good things about it. The screen is not the best, but this is an absolute workhorse. It is also very sturdy, and the battery lasts forever. GET THIS!!!
@conandlibrarian I came to say the same!

@alelabarca 5/7 Perfect!
@stilesja HA! I just read that yesterday. One of the funniest things I've seen in a while.
@conandlibrarian Backlit keyboard? Asking for a friend...
Eh
Dont need no stinkin' chromebooks!
They make great paper weights
Your computer might eat other computers only if it's KEYED up-- or maybe if it's keys are down....
Our school offers students to use chromebooks and laptops while on campus, and some students can take home chrome books or laptops should they need them and if they qualify. I only use them on campus but yeah I'm pretty familiar with it. Its a decent OS, but it cant run like anything because most computers are kind of weak as well
@legendornothing is the RAM soldered? user upgradeable? I have two 4 GB sticks I can use...
@kus Soldered. No field upgrades on these.
This model is apparently the one for Costco. The Acer webpage currently says this model is 1920x1080 "IPS," but the Costco website product details say 1366x768 screen. Costco rep on FB said that Acer said that the Acer website 1080P description is wrong. (Certainly its not the first time.)
@eeterrific Also, in the product details:
Screen Resolution: 1366 x 768
Dunno why they're calling it "Full HD", because it is not.
@jandrese well, there was a time when 480p was "HD"
@h1p1n3 480p has never been considered HD maybe 540P and definitely 720p and 1080i/p are HD...
You can also get the refurbished model on Amazon for 189.
@mehgrl $189.99!
This might be the most "Meh'ed" deal ever. Right now at 99.94%.
install gentoo
An inch thick?! 2003 called and wants it laptop back.
@grmeyer The thickness is what I like, I don't ever feel like I am going to hurt it.
@grmeyer Yeah, they said that like it's a good thing. And 4.85 pounds!?!?!? You'd expect a machine that runs an actual OS.
@conandlibrarian "The thickness is what I like" - That's what she said.
@conandlibrarian my wife said the same thing yesterday
@conandlibrarian Show us the unit...Why does everybody wanna see my Chromebook?!

Front Page says the model is CB5-571-C5XU (not the one linked to Amazon) $169.99
@mnehme1 are we allowed to point out @meh sometimes doesn't have the best deals? I don't know man, sounds risky!
@elimanningface Yes we are encouraged too. :)
@elimanningface meh.
@mnehme1 i always have the best deals.
@meh ill give you the deal, perhaps without the eal maybe with it I haven't decided yet
@sp3ar much like everyone else in the world, i'll pass.
@mnehme1 yes, on ebay, i see CB5-571-C5XU for $169.99 from the "official" Acer Refurb store.
@mnehme1 great job - we are finding out how the inconceivable could be happening and adjusting our plans for world domination. This will presumably include correcting our spec confusion and lowering the price retroactively for all buyers.

@OldCatLady You're welcome for the $45 refund, all 82 of you suckers.
meh. love chromebooks, but this is too heavy.
Ummm, I don't think this is full HD. The resolution is not 1080p. Am I missing something?
@equable1 Yup, there's a disconnect between the front page and the specs page. 1080p IPS screen would've been very nice for $200...
Well wound up with two of the Toshiba ones from here. Like the idea of the bigger screen, but not if the lower resolution and slower processor. Still see these selling out by 9am EST though
On ebay by Acer $169.99.

I really want this, but have bills to pay :(
@USMC503 (psst... hold out for them to cave on the price for the toshiba one)
@USMC503 You'll be able to use this to pay bills online. So, it's a win, right?
I did it. sassy-selfish-sunflower
Need clarity from Meh-lords - is this 1080p or no?
@sctthrrmn Yes. Only TVs do 1080i. There's no real need to interlace video nowadays; it's largely just a holdover from the very early days of TV. Computer monitors are always progressive unless otherwise specified.
@jqubed Still mixed up because of the specs page and model number which indicate 1366 x 768
No, you shall NOT tempt me. I shall pass this round Meh!
LOL @ "4GB DDR3 processor".
@cathasach eh, considering the memory controller's on-die, it's a reasonable statement.
@lifftchi Except the 3205U doesn't have a 4GB controller; it's 16GB. They were not referring to the controller, just conflating two unrelated specs.
I saw this first-hand tonight. My brother bought himself a new TV on Cyber Monday. I convinced him he should go with a slightly smaller TV that had a better-rated panel. I got some really sweet deals on laptops with all the bells and whistles buying out of the PON listings. You had to decide what you wanted, wait for it to show up, and jump on it when it did.
@jqubed Walmart hands it back to the supplier, so they don't care.
Or you could go to Samsung's site and get a new chromebook for $199.00(spec's smaller but is more than enough) or even yet get a 28"Samsung tv for $199.00. Last wk the chromebook was $149.00. Can I get a MEHMEN!!!
Who would pay almost 400$ for a new chromebook?? I mean for $ 400 you can get a pretty good functional laptop with 1000x more functionality.
@goosedude and 10000x more problems. eff that.

@sligett thanks for the link! I didn't realize they had offline capabilities either.
I would be pissed if I bought this thinking it was full HD only to find out it is not.
@sourhead Agreed. Ridiculous that Acer themselves gets it wrong. Above reference that Costco confirmed via Facebook that Acer was wrong is comical.
@snapster It's nice to know there are real people behind all these deals rather than an infallible computer churning out perfect prices. I can hear it around the Meh. Com dinner tables... "you won't believe what happened at work today"

@snapster Thank you sir! Meh continues to demonstrate upstanding qualities that far outweigh it's name!
@snapster Awesome. I checked when I woke this morning and (thought I) saw $200. When I got to work it was $155 and just assumed I was pre-coffee. Instant 23% discount? You guys rock.
@snapster Makes the note below (copied from the listing) seem prescient:
Model: CB5-571-C5XU (that's awfully long, but given the bewildering variety of configurations that laptops can have, we won't judge it too harshly)
I just logged in at work and saw that the price was lowered from where I saw it at midnight. Pretty sweet, but I'm still not going to buy one.
$99 probably would tempt me
Buy it now. Next week meh will be selling it for $10 more.
I just bought this with a smaller HD. Would've paid the $15 more for the extra storage ... Now to decide if the return hassle is worth it.
@russellwilde 64GB micro flash drives are pretty cheap, and aren't chromebooks all about online storage anyway?
@ACraigL true. That's how I convinced myself that 16GB would be enough. So I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping it.
@russellwilde @ACraigL I recommend using a SD card if you plan for it to be permanent storage. a USB drive sticks out the side and could easily snag on things, while an SD card would not. though that is assuming you use your chrome book in a way where you move it around or take it on the go and it doesn't simply sit at a desk and doesn't move.
@upbeatanime @russellwilde @ACraigL These flash drives only stick out about a quarter of an inch (much less than a cm, if that's how you roll). I have one in my laptop "permanently".
4GB DDR3 processor? Really???
Can anyone comment on the quality of the 720p screen? The "300+ reviews on Amazon" that the meh write-up refers to are based on the 1080p screen. Also, Google searches just returns reviews from tech sites that only received the 1080p version.

@AwRy108 check the links above, the full HD version is available refurbished from acer (via eBay) for $190~
@captaincats yeah, all the reviews are for the 1080p IPS; whereas the one we're considering is a 720p TN, which means it has a lower resolution AND limited viewing angles. BUT IT'S ONLY $155!?!
@chipt4 thanks! Whelp, that settles it--gonna pass on the "meh" and probably grab the 1080p IPS version.
@AwRy108 Hopefully this will give you an idea. My camera kind of catches some of the pixels and makes it look worse than it is, but for text and surfing it should work great.
@Moose thank you! Way more help with my dilemma than all the "professional" URL's that get paid to point this stuff out to consumers.
@AwRy108 well now that I'm looking at it I'm not sure if the eBay link IS the 1080 version. (I'm on mobile so I can't see the full description)
@Moose Thanks! Your photos of the screen pushed me over the edge on this one.
@snapster I'd dismissed this at $200, but when I checked back today and y'all had adjusted the price, I had to take a closer look. You guys rock!
720p looks fine on a 15" screen. It's not like I'm going to edit photos or videos on a Chromebook.
It should do great for email and Youtube.
Wait... Can I play L4D2?
So the question appears to be is worth it to pay an extra $40 for the 1080p model?
@captaincats $30 assuming freight here. Honestly I'd buy their deal while it lasts but both are aggressive.
I suppose it's likely that the higher res has processing power and perhaps even battery consequences but most would jump without considering those.
@captaincats on a 15.6 inch screen, I think the extra cash on the higher resolution is well worth it. 1366x768 is for bitches
@snapster Starred for your honesty, i know it's one of the known refreshing things about the way Meh does business, but I just wanted to thank you again.
@djslack hey thanks I'm in it for the stars! it helps knowing both of these deals are under wholesale offers for the product in bulk.

Will this run the full Chrome browser with the ability to cast to Chrome cast?
@eddweebic not sure what you'd mean by full Chrome browser but it being ChromeOS the feature is supported https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/3289520?hl=en
@eddweebic yes. it can cast to chromecast.
@snapster On an iPad the chrome browser doesn't support the cast extension.
I had a conversation with my grandfather about meh a while back after the Toshiba crome books. Turns out he is addicted to meh now and bought me one of these acers... Thank you meh in a round a bout way you got me an Acer today
Can't get past credit card input screen.
@sandydaugherty if you are using umatrix/noscript or the like be sure to allow the following:
IE 11. Switching to chrome.
That worked. My order number renders a rather startling mental picture: it's "abundantly-ardent-heron" I see a 14th Century Japanese woodcut of a three legged bird wading among the cattails....
Got my Toshiba today. No buyer's remorse here! The screen is gorgeous. I'm hooked on IPS panels. For such a slow processor it feels pretty snappy.
i really want one, but i KNOW i don't need it
@ $200....I said "HMMMMMMMMMMMeh"
@$155 (after some frantic googling on the limits / features of ChromeOS, EoL and what have you) I said "YERP!"
and yea - the End of Life date on this is April 2020. I'm impressed google.
So hey....how about putting up some refurb'd ChromeCasts and dirt cheap 128Gb SD cards tomorrow?
