@TaRDy From the time I was about 13 or so, until 3-4 years ago I used to drink 60oz per day, roughly. Now it's maybe 16 per week, non-caffeinated. I should probably cut that out too. I did shift my caffeine to Coffee though.
@TaRDy Me too - I worked at Pizza Hut in high school. We got drinks for free. I'd have two or three 32 oz cups of Pepsi every day. I was 30 years old when I decided to start drinking coffee (ready to give up the sweet, but not the caffeine). I officially limit myself to one per week (going cold turkey would just make me crave it more), but I've gone months without one.
I quit Cokes for about six months in hopes of losing a few pounds. Instead I gained about 15 (the fuck?) so I bought a case of Cokes a couple weeks ago. Some days I drink none and others I'll have two.
@PurplePawprints I switched to diet and lost about 20, in 2001. I think if you quit outright, you may subconsciously change your habits. Not everybody loses weight switching to diet, though.
@PocketBrain Yeah, I drank Diet Coke for a long time, but finally quit it and switched back to regular Coke because of the Aspartame. I replaced my soda habit when I quit with more coffee (loaded with creamer and sugar) and a bit of tea, so I'm sure there's some validity to your thesis.
Based on how everyone is voting... I should be dead by morning. 3-4 cans a day and unlimited soda at work. Crap. Meh, my VIP will keep renewing long after I'm dead.
I had a 2 liter (or more) diet cola habit. I quit cold turkey a couple of months ago. (This is the future, I get my caffeine from pills now.) I lost 10 pounds since then. I am now merely overweight, as opposed to obese.
I bought one of those soda makers (and a refill hack) and use it to fizz up some juice from time to time. Fun if you can get one cheap, though it's not really saving me any money over decent Mexican soda.
Remember, if you drink a 20, you're in the 20-24 oz. category. That's just one. My consumption varies; sometimes I'll damn near finish off a 2-L Diet Dew in a day (say that six times fast). Sometimes just 12-oz in a day, sometimes, nothing but water. I do drink diet sodas exclusively, though, so at least I'm not getting sugar.
I feel like the answers people gave to this poll are probably the most bullshit of any poll yet. There is no way that many people don't drink soda. I don't mean you, yes, you next person to comment and tell me that you never drink anything but water and will then proceed to both tell me why soda is unnatural and bad and chastise me for calling the majority out on their bullshit when I don't know them. Fuck them, and fuck you too. This is one of those subjects where almost everyone lies, I'm not sure why, it's kinda like admitting you occasionally eat at mcdonalds.
@RedHot Selection bias. A good story about quitting (I have my own as a response to someone's comment above) provides discussion. Saying "I have a can/bottle/cup or two most days" is boring and nobody cares. And the poll itself says "typical day", not "ever", so you get more people that might have 2 or 3 per week justifying to themselves that a "typical day" they don't have any.
@RedHot I don't think it a bullshit poll, as much as maybe just bad choices. It doesn't say never it's none on a normal day. I have the occasional one when out on lunch but once or twice a week would still put me in the none choice for a "normal" day.
@RedHot I am a MT Dew fan(atic)...but I stopped drinking it in favor of Rock Star (not a healthy alternative) and then swapped Rock Stars for Mio Energy due to cost (mostly). I don't claim to have done it for health reasons...Diet Dew is disgusting! I went the cheap route...$1 a day in caffeine expense vs $3 for 2 Rock Stars on sale etc.
@RedHot I drink an occasional soda, but very rarely.. I've conditioned myself to think they are way too sweet.. And I've never liked "diet" anything.. But I drink black coffee all morning and sometimes into the afternoon.. A lot of water later in the day.. Iced tea (usually unsweetened, but I like sweet more) if I'm at a restaurant, and I drink beer or liquor in the evenings sometimes. I'll have a soda every now and then, but less than once a week. Our soda stream is mostly used to make tonic to go with gin.. lol. I was hooked on mt dew in college, and I think I over did it.. I can't stand the stuff now usually. I've never liked any cola (coke or pepsi or others).
I try to be healthy these days, but I'm not great at it.. Soda is one thing where I've stayed strong.. lol.
@RedHot Since my gallbladder was taken out, I can't handle any carbonation. No beer, no soda...I don't not drink them because they're bad for my health, I don't drink them because I feel like shit after I do.
I contribute my acid reflux to my high school/college freshman days of 80+ oz of Mt Dew per day. It was essentially my version of water. These days its maybe a bottle of diet dew with lunch or dinner, but usually its water. or scotch.
Never drank, never smoked, never tried any drugs, so I'm not going to be guilted about my soft drink habit. Even considering a 32-oz fountain drink is probably 40% water in the form of ice, I am well over the 60oz daily intake.
@mfladd Yeah, I am so used to dealing with nice people that going to Boston was a shock! Actually I went there on business, didn't mind it except I got lost 3 times without changing roads and when I was driving across the state I was amazed that the soda options were so limited. My next stop was in Texas where I saw this:
I've cut back drastically for me at least. Though I apparently wasn't as bad as others. I'd have a 20oz at lunch, and a 12oz can with dinner (32oz a day).
I've cut back to a can of coke-a-cola when I eat pizza or weekends as mixers (Crown/Pendleton & Coke(-a-cola)).
Vanilla coke from the Super special fountain machines is my weakness though.
I average 1 soda a week. If you add tonic water (Q or Fever Tree) then it's 2 or 3. Average that down with the copious amounts of water I drink and it's well under 1% of my intake.
It's an iced coffee in the morning, then water the rest of the day. Soda was tough to kick, since the co I work for has 2 coke machines per floor and they sell cans for 5 cents. The cost is only to cover the deposit required in MA.
I used to drink none. Just water for years. When I was a kid, I'd drink 6-12 a day. Make pyramids next to my desk of empty root beer cans. However, over the past week I've been averaging two 12oz cans a day.
As a former coke (a-cola) addict, I am happy to say I am over 2 years clean of my addiction.
In my prime it was up to 52-70 oz. per day, it was bad. Now I am happy without it.
If anyone is looking for a sponsor, please let me know, there is help out there.

soda is gross
except Dr. Pepper which is okay on some rare occasions
@WilhelmScreamer and oddly enough Diet Dr Pepper tastes better than regular Dr Pepper I don't get it
Soda? None...it would interfere with my beer drinkin'.
Well "soda" drink it everyday ( and night) :)

I don't drink soda often, but when I do it's Ramune
@thismyusername Yeah, I have one of those every couple of months too.
@kazriko that stuff is epic. Haven't had it In a looooong time though.
@thismyusername the picture on that bottle looks like a blue penis
@thismyusername these are so gooooood
@thismyusername asian food grocer dot com. lot better brands and flavors
@chr I am a sucker for the original flavor, nothing like it.
That top answer mix is impressive and unexpected. Kudos to mehtizens. Unless that soda is being replaced by something more nefarious.
@RedOak We've all switched to crack.
@RedOak Rum.
Mountain Dew made with real sugar! None of that HFCS for me - I go for the healthy stuff.
@FreddieKrueger excellent. I love your humor.
I don't but when I do I try to drink imported. After tasting Mexican Sprite I will never go back to american Sprite. it's so yum and citrusy

@RedHot I don't drink soda every day- maybe a couple times a week, more if I had mixed drinks on the weekend.
@RedHot
No soda for several years. Used to have a better than 1 liter a day coke zero habit.
Switched to unsweetened iced tea, lotsa water, about 1 zero-cal energy drink a day, and starbucks about twice a week.
Why would that be a lie?
Btw McD about once a year. I get one of the wraps when i go. No burgers there for decades (ugh). No frys for many years (miss these.)

Every once in a while I try with the same result.
@lisaviolet Can you drink flat soda, or is that too much effort for too little return?
@dashcloud Flat soda is nasty. shudder....I miss the cold bubbles sliding down my throat...
I contribute my acid reflux to my high school/college freshman days of 80+ oz of Mt Dew per day. It was essentially my version of water. These days its maybe a bottle of diet dew with lunch or dinner, but usually its water. or scotch.

Survey responders could not be splitting the regional linguistics "soda"/"pop"/"coke" hairs could we?
@RedOak don't forget Tonic (Boston)
@mfladd screw the Massholes and their stupid incorrect words
@tightwad well, you are located close if you know we are massholes. New York?
@mfladd nope, just been there. You also don't know how to drink soda...fountain with 5 options vs Texas stops with over 100...
@tightwad Texas....now I get the anger. :) I am not Mass anymore, but it is still where I consider home.
@tightwad Soda-Palooza at RaceTrac! Buy the Cup and get free refills all summer. Good times... I admit I have a Coke Zero problem
@tightwad But all the roads are so clearly marked here. hehe
@tightwad - That's an appropriate label under the dispensers.
Or perhaps since "soda" sales have been tanking the past several years, there's truth in those survey answers.
And folks don't consider the "energy" drinks being hyped everywhere as "soda"? They certainly aren't priced like "soda".
Ditto for flavored water drinks.
The only time I ever drink soda anymore is in a Cuba Libre. So maybe 4-6 (i.e., 2-3 12 oz. cans of soda) per month during the summer.
Does barley-soda count?
I've cut back drastically for me at least. Though I apparently wasn't as bad as others. I'd have a 20oz at lunch, and a 12oz can with dinner (32oz a day).
