@discmaster I was thinking similiarly about the Sunday drives my grandfather used to take us on -- they were never far, but they seemed eternally long being trapped in the "way back" with my brother!
Round trip, or one way? I semi-annually make the Trek from here in NW Buckeyeland, to my brother's house near Ft Worth, which is around 1100mi one way. then a few days later i have to drive back, for a total of 2200 mi. and i've done both ways straight through a few times (only making Food, Gas, and Potty stops) takes 18-21 hrs depending on stops, traffic, etc.
Rode from Baltimore to Cape Spear and back. In the rain. In the middle of winter. At night. The bugs were so bad they caked up on our visors and we couldn't see. And it was nighttime. And my visor was dark tinted. And it was 100 degrees. And I got held up in customs. And we were camping so no showers or hot food. And the gas in Canada only comes in liters. And we were parked next to radioactive cargo on the ferry. Probably 50,000 miles. Mostly uphill. That was a great trip.
College - University of Miami. I did the trip from Connecticut to Miami and back at least fifty times. Best time: George Washington Bridge to Coral Gables - 16 hours. This was back in the days of CB radios, so we could make great time.
From Tybee Island, Georgia to Huntington Beach, California (coast to coast) on a bicycle. 2 1/2 months. Spent about 1/3 of the trip in Texas. Discovered first hand that is a very big state.
In 2009 we (me, wife, kids ages 7, 5, and 3) bought a vanagon adventurewagen and drove 15,000 miles through 38 states in four months. One of the coolest experiences ever, for all of us.
Total drive: Orlando, FL to Hartford, CT to Great Lakes, IL, to Millington, TN to Alameda, CA, to Ocala, FL (via Oregon; I was going to visit Crater Lake, but turns out they were still closed for winter in April). With a couple years' stops in-between. Longest leg was the Alameda to Ocala trip.
On the drive down, the car died in the middle of nowhere in between Alabama and Mississippi. Engine seized from the heat and one of the piston arms punched through the block. Luckily a nice couple stopped and drove us down to Meridian, Ms to get a tow and rental. Old used car, so I just sold it to the tow yard to cover fees and got a rental back.
@The_Baron We had a military jet come down and buzz us. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere on the way to New Orleans from NYC. We thought the car was falling apart before we saw the jet! It was about 100 feet above us.
If we can count Beech twin engine aircraft, Islamabad Pakistan to Washington D.C. and back. Through the Azores, and Newfoundland, not straight through. Maybe 16,000 nautical miles round trip. Would have taken the bus, but wait! There's no roads across the Atlantic, at least none above water.
Philadelphia to Madison WI
Minnesota to Las Vegas and back, circular manner. 3800 miles total.
@jrs1980 Last Summer My(68yr old) Parents made this Loop over about 3 weeks: Roughly 4700 mi, since i just used towns, instead of adresses.
@earlyre I did the cities we slept in. We (me and three friends, celebrating a 30th birthday) left on a Monday morning, were back the next Wednesday.
I once drove from Los Angeles to Clearwater FL without switching drivers. Not a lot of fun.
@tonylegrone hey I live in Clearwater. Woo woo and such
The ones with the kids in the back seat are the longest... it only takes about 10 miles for my kids to open a portal to hell right in the back-seat.

Seattle to Taxco, Mexico. Three thousand miles each way with a great deal of wandering along the way that probably added another thousand miles.

Norfolk, VA to New Orleans and back to watch my college's basketball team lose in the NCAA tournament.
Funny, 800-1000 is seen as a phone number by my phone. Maybe I'll call it.
@agermane Message TN00954
3 months in Europe from the VW factory as far north as Amsterdam and south to Dubrovnik. Probably 5000 - 6000 miles.
On the other hand, I know a coworker who has never taken the highway out of town. Talk about small world . . .
Southern Illinois to Modesto, California.

Just took one (<1000 miles) hence my absence this past week as reading/posting from my phone can be cumbersome. Goats can be soooo lazy.
@narfcake Nice to have you back. I thought maybe you were taking your Goat retirement in the Bahamas.
One time I drove from Alaska to the Panama Canal.

Monterey CA to Opalocka FL. Back before the interstates. Going from Fort Ord to my parents home north of Miami. (I flew back)
Boston to New Orleans in one shot.

@smilingjack The military says that never happens. Yeah right.
@The_Baron Holy crap! That is a looooooog drive for one shot! We did it in 2 days whenever we went and we were only in our 20's at the time.
My father was in the service and got transferred all over the place. And during summers and holidays, we'd go visit his family. Lots of road trips.
Does flying count?
Haven't we already had a poll about how far we've traveled?

3000 miles: Sulphur Springs, TX to Anaheim, CA and back. Good times!
Ventura CA to Denver CO. I was in Denver for chivefest.com ---spent less time in Denver than the trip to Denver.... what an experience.
