A Month of Lego - Shrubberies or 21318 Tree House

As an homage to @weboh, I figured we would talk about the different types of plants that have been made by Lego over the years. According to Bricklink, there are 46 Plant (Tree), 32 Plant, and 25 Duplo Plant elements. The first trees appeared in the Lego System of Play Town Plan in 1955. The initial town was a vinyl mat with an overhead view of lots and streets. The early trees stood on round bases and didn’t attach to anything - just like the cars, bicycles and road signs.

In the 1960s, the tree base was updated so that it would fit onto the base plates, but it was still a two dimensional hand painted tree.

In the 1970’s, the 3d pine tree and the first fruit trees arrive.

In the 1980’s and beyond, we start to see the development of the full line of elements that can be combined to make larger trees - trunks, branches and leaves all join the system.

Fast forward to 2019 and we have our set of the day. The largest of the Idea series (when it was released) coming in at 3036 pieces is the Tree House. Its a pretty significant build with a 425 page manual. It covers many advanced building techniques leveraging Technic bricks, offsetting and many types of SNOT (yes you have to look that up). The set comes with 4 minifigures - Mom, Dad, Brother and Sister. One other nice touch is that they included leaves for autumn - basically a second set of the leaf elements in a brown and tan so you can update the tree for Fall. Overall an impressive set and the biggest Tree in the Lego Universe.
