A baby. A doggy. OMG the cuteness! It's SCIENCE!!

“Baby Abram and Haru, his Shiba Inu sidekick, both want a piece of cheese. But in order to get it, they must first ring the bell. Can they learn this trick? The answer isn’t too surprising, but what does surprise me is how polite the dog is to the baby, and how helpful the baby tries to be to the dog.”

Pavlov would be proud.
And now, of course, I’m going to go to the fridge for a cheese stick.
I did obedience training with my dog before I had kids and it was extremely useful. Kids aren’t that much different.
@sammydog01 Yeah - sit, stay, no - all useful.
@Kidsandliz @sammydog01 But my kids never learned to whine at the door and then go shit in the yard, no matter how many times they saw the dog do it. (In retrospect that was probably for the best.)
@macromeh @sammydog01 Ahh but I bet they learned they’d be confined to their
cageroom if they were bad baddoggieschildren.@Kidsandliz @macromeh A couple of things I learned that weren’t obvious to me:
Don’t reward them every time they do a thing you want them to- just once in a while at random. You don’t want your 8 year old to expect a cookie every time he poops in the potty.
You only need to tell give them a command once. They heard you, they’re just fucking with you.
@macromeh @sammydog01 Research backs up that intermittent rewards gives the hardest behavior to extinguish. Also, for example, caving in the store to shut up the screaming is rewarding bad behavior and since you don’t do it every time it makes it harder to get that behavior to be extinguished.
Quite honestly if DHS wouldn’t have taken a dim view on it I would have chained my teen to her bed on weekends so that I wouldn’t have to give her the consequence (for sneaking out) of removing her door and putting her mattress on the floor of my room (both of which she hated - taking away things they value for short periods of time - in this case the privacy of having her own room with a door that stayed shut - is reasonably effective). Having to do that also punished me, but usually kept that behavior in check for 4-6 weeks before there was a rinse and repeat.
