These zinc batteries don’t last as long as alkalines and won’t even work at all in high-drain devices. Unless you need a LOT of batteries for low drain uses (like if you have 100 remote controls?), you should probably pass on this.
So, behind the scenes look at the meh setup, this writeup was inspired by @dave and I talking about having lots of batteries around, and he said “some things just burn through batteries…” and I get ready to reply with how my wife and I just talked the day before about how our motion sensing soap dispenser eats batteries, when he finishes with "…we have a motion sensing soap dispenser… " and I cut him off saying “I KNOW RIGHT?!” We both even knew about how you can take out the batteries and put them back in for another day or two of soap.
@Moose Umm, yeah. The nozzle on my pump hand soap dispenser occasionally gets a little clogged so when I push it the soap shoots out kind of sideways. Totally get it man, totally.
The last time I got batteries of this type was when Radio Shack still had the battery of the month club. That was many many years ago …
/image battery club card
this is honestly the worst deal ive seen from MEH. BIG SHAME!! in the 99cent store they carry name brand batteries 4 for a dollar. 96 batteries for $15 is 24 packs of 4. thats 24 dollars for brand name AA batteries. MEH is selling them wholesale which means this is the regular price if you would buy a case of them.
Now here’s the big issue. THESE ARE NOT ALKALINE. THEY ARE CARBON ZINC!! save your money as it is only a drop cheaper than buying ALKALINE batteries from energizer.
BTW this is my first comment in the 897 days I’ve been a member of MEH. this deal is a no deal from me. its a shame because i was looking for batteries. If this is the best price they could make, they got ripped off big time from their distributor.
@cinoclav whobsaud anything about sunbeam? Lol. And 100% sunbeam is better than this company called “everyday” lol youbfir real? I’m talking Polaroid and Panasonic as opposed to Duracell and energizer. Costs me 4 for a dollar of alkaline I’m the 99¢ store. Firget the quality of zinc vs alkaline. The price isn’t a deal ifnyou do the math. You can buy bulk batteries like this of alkaline from amazon for just about the same price
@zach_kay392 It was sort of a joke but Sunbeam is actually a very common brand in dollar stores. They’re total crap. Polaroid and Panasonic aren’t a whole lot better. This actually is a pretty good deal for these particular batteries. Problem being, I would never use these batteries. The cheapest I see for 96 alkaline batteries on Amazon is $20 for EverBrites. While I don’t particularly trust the brand, I’d still choose them over any zinc batteries. See ya in another 897 days!
@cinoclav first if all, any alkaline battery is better than zinc. Period. No question about it. And in higher powered devices, zinc won’t last 2 hours. In noise cancellimg headphones, zinc batteries won’t make the cancelling and sound as good as alkaline. Facts. Sunbeam is a brand name not a good one, but not bad at all. 100% better than this nothing on meh. Panasonic used to be competitors with Duracell in batteries until Panasonic stopped making alkalime batteries for the most part because it wasn’t worth it for them. Polaroid comes 6 in a pack for a dollar. Panasonic and poloaroid are very good brands for batteries just they haven’t been making huge amounts of alkaline as if late. For the price her for 96 batteries for a no name buying wholese, it is the same price as buying Panasonic NOT IN BULK BUT 4 AT A TIME. These are 100% not worth the money and actually isn’t even a sale or wholesale price. Meh got ripled off. Only people buying these are ones who didn’t realize it is zinc or don’t k is the difference. I used to work in electronics and know about the batteries and brands. This is a no name and zinc. Per quality, it is worth it to buy on amazon, which isn’t even cheap, energizer because these batteries you will go through 50 of them in the time it will tame to go through 5 or 6 energizer. You are better off going to the store buying Panasonic or even sunbeam than these
@zach_kay392 Dude, relax. For beginners, we’ve made it perfectly clear that any alkaline battery is better than these pieces of crap. Secondly, these are not no-name batteries. Eveready is one of, if not the oldest battery company in existence. They’ve been around over 100 years. As for Panasonic batteries, they suck. Here: http://www.nbc12.com/story/18276282/which-batteries-last-longest
Finally - maybe you really should wait another 897 days for your next post. Sheesh…
@mythereal But I don’t see a spot for batteries in anything non-electronic. If I put them in the spokes of my bicycle will it make me go faster or at least sound like a motorcycle?
Ever since I was a kid (1980’s) these were crap batteries. You can tell by how lightweight they are. They might work as remote control batteries and that’s about it.
@Larry1977 I agree. Somehow I learned when I was a kid that the Z-C batteries actually use the zinc in the metal cup to sustain the reaction that allows the stored energy. So, as the batteries are drained they are likely to consume their own “shell” until the acid leaks out. The cause of many crusty Walkmans at my Jr High was the use of these exact Eveready batteries. On the plus side, I remember there being a small skinny piece of “charcoal” down the center of the tube to play with, after the battery explodes and gets dried battery boogers all over your tape deck.
I would caution anyone away from the “Heavy Duty” batteries except in the case of a battery-powered clock where you can see when it runs down. Or, like EVERYONE has mentioned: they’re ok in remote controls… maybe because they expire before the reaction can consume the zinc cup?
Anyway, I seriously considered not posting this since it’s just a foggy memory from 7th grade. But the omniscient Wikipedia backs me up, at least a little:
I bought the supercharger several years ago from Meh and it works very well so I will get at a minimum 2 uses from each battery, I think this is a great deal despite all the negative comments I’m in for 96 with free delivery figuring shipping is 5 bucks minimum great deal team Meh. TY
“Heavy Duty” batteries are often the least powerful batteries you can buy
I believe these terms didn’t start out as misleading. For example the term Heavy Duty battery was used to refer to Zinc chloride batteries which had about 50% more capacity than traditional carbon zinc batteries. But that was 50 years ago! Calling zinc chloride batteries heavy duty became misleading once alkaline batteries with 300% more capacity than zinc chloride batteries became available.
1st: Our household uses all rechargeable 'trees 'cept 9v. (Those adapters for C + D cell work excellent and for $6 I can get a 16 pack of double or triple As at that rainforest site.) 2nd: I’d be an 18650 battery.
I’m honestly surprised that the soap dispensers take batteries at all. I’ve seen some with PV panels on the top, which always struck me as an elegant solution.
Back when woot was woot and not Amazon, I bought a shit ton of batteries. They worked great and well past the expiry date. If fact I only just disposed of the last set a few weeks ago.
Isn’t the soap dispenser the least important item to be hands-free? Sure, people touch them with probably-gross hands, but the very next thing you HAVE to do is… wash your hands! You can’t spread the germs you may have picked up because your hands have soap on them and you aren’t going to touch anything else with soapy hands.
Oh heck yeah and I just got a new fridge. Screw the beer fridge idea, this fridge is going to be full of batteries. If only Meh would sell C, D and this big camping light batteries.
Need a corded handless soapy dispenser and then wire the outlet to the fart fan switch. Now you’ve got a wasteless solution to a problem that didn’t exist!
These are the batteries you get when you order some electronic device that actually has batteries included. They last about an 1 hour which is good as they will probably damage said device anyway.
There are going to be 100’s of unhappy people when these arrive.
@fordprefect@nostrom0 Not likely. These batteries will only work reliably in things with very low power draw (infrared remotes, simple LED flashlights, etc.) If your console controller has force feedback (vibration/rumble), these likely wouldn’t last long.
Will these work in game console remotes? Kids burn through those pretty fast. I tried pricey rechargeable but got tired of changing them out even more often.
@fordprefect These have about half the capacity of a regular AA Eneloop, so… even if they work as far as drain, you’ll be changing them even more often.
i can either accept this as proof that I’m a compulsive shopper, or buy a bunch of hands free soap dispensers to show that this wasn’t a mistake. I think you can guess which one I’m doing right now…
Received batteries all 96 loose in a retaped box ,they come 24 in a box but the flaps at bottom of the box dont hold the weight of the batteries so sounded like a box of pebbles hmm.
@spapaste they didn’t last at all but it took almost a year to come back and say something? I mean, I guess if they lasted like a day or two each and you just ran out, maybe.
“Heavy duty” batteries are usually more like light doody.
Yeah, wanted to mention that these were all crap. and yes I waited forever to say that. Because I kept forgetting. But I am buying a thing today so I decided to mention this.

Oh, the places we’ll go…
@norman8 Like, for example, the refrigerator.
I need AAA thank you
This could have my remote working forever.
@ilovejojo Sky’s the limit until 2020
not alkaline? strong pass
@aj Sigh, Al Kaline was my hero when I was growing up.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kalinal01.shtml
/giphy al kaline
@aj
These are alkaline
@aj
Nevermind, I’m wrong. Eveready’s website lists these as carbon zinc, a dry cell battery.
@aj @thechilipepper0 yeah. “Heavy duty” is usually not the good kind.
Battery time — meh keeps on going and going and going
The fridge beckons…
These zinc batteries don’t last as long as alkalines and won’t even work at all in high-drain devices. Unless you need a LOT of batteries for low drain uses (like if you have 100 remote controls?), you should probably pass on this.
@d like if my house is full of always-on autodetecting soap dispensers?
Nice try, but @mfladd wants AAA, not AA.
But have another ‘a’ of sorts:
@mflassy Fuckin Ayyy, I do!!! Bastards did this just to torment me!
Not alkaline. Only good for low power draws.
Need AAA not AA! I already have a gazillion AA from Meh. 9v would be nice too.
Lame-o
These aren’t ziplocks
@Ignorant Fuckin ayyy, we need those too!
Zinc batteries are so wasteful. Why wouldn’t you just use alkaline?
Last time I bought batteries off meh they exploded…
@Coldwyn I see Michael Bay is making batteries now.
@Coldwyn Attention All terrorists!..
Remember, heavy duty batteries are misleadingly named. They can’t handle high drain and expire very quickly.
@Seeds So they’re basically heavy doody.
Looks like the floor board of a Tesla
I bring the ‘D’.
Last hurricane, D cells were nowhere to be found. Guess what all my flashlights take?
@TheGreatNico 18650s?
@TheGreatNico Get those adapters that let you use AA’s in place of D’s.
I still have Energizer batteries from December’s deal so I am not “ready” for today’s sale.
Slingshot ammo!
@phendrick Eco-unfriendly though
@lindwright @phendrick non alkaline battery lives matter
1886 called. They want their battery technology back.
Yikes! I need sleep, the automatic me pushed buy before the thinking me realized the were carbon-zinc…had a flashback of being at Harbor Fright…
@margot Not sure if typo or terribly good pun…
So, behind the scenes look at the meh setup, this writeup was inspired by @dave and I talking about having lots of batteries around, and he said “some things just burn through batteries…” and I get ready to reply with how my wife and I just talked the day before about how our motion sensing soap dispenser eats batteries, when he finishes with "…we have a motion sensing soap dispenser… " and I cut him off saying “I KNOW RIGHT?!” We both even knew about how you can take out the batteries and put them back in for another day or two of soap.
So, anyone else know that struggle?
@Moose No, not really. I like dirt.
@Moose Umm, yeah. The nozzle on my pump hand soap dispenser occasionally gets a little clogged so when I push it the soap shoots out kind of sideways. Totally get it man, totally.
“1,100 mAh to 0.8 volts”
So these work on low drain devices that aren’t picky about voltage.
Jeez, I didn’t even know they sold carbon zinc outside developing countries anymore
@pdinc This is actually how they raise money for developing countries.
Calling these batteries ‘super heavy duty’ is like calling Trump calling the Mueller investigation ‘Spygate’.
@wishlish So, in other words, the truth…
There’s 30 comments/replies as I’m writing this, and only one “batteries in the refrigerator” joke. C’mon guys!

@narfcake Radio Shack: You’ve got questions, we’ve got blank stares!
@blaineg @narfcake Where have you been @blaineg? You missed getting nominated for June goat!
@blaineg @narfcake Towards the end, it was more like “Buy a cellphone, please! I need three sales this month to keep my job!”
@narfcake @therealjrn You say that like it’s a bad thing.
I’ve been around. Life is back to normal, no more medical excitement, and I hope to keep it that way.
Don’t have the fridge space for this
@Alderuen That’s how you know it’s time for another fridge. You can never have too many. True story…

Heavey Duty batteries are like Spam; cheap, plentiful, and I don’t want any.
“What do you mean ‘Urgghh’? I don’t like spam!”
Ever since I was a kid (1980’s) these were crap batteries. You can tell by how lightweight they are. They might work as remote control batteries and that’s about it.
@Larry1977 and when the remote stops working, they give it weight to fly straight.

This site itself is a little dated, but talks about so-called heavy duty batteries and why that old description is misleading…
@Liquidblue Came here to make this statement myself. These days, labeling carbon zinc batteries ‘Super Heavy Duty’ or ‘Industrial’ should be a crime…
This is too big for my SanDisk sansa m240 Mp3 player

@brhfl Will remember that: TY
I’m honestly surprised that the soap dispensers take batteries at all. I’ve seen some with PV panels on the top, which always struck me as an elegant solution.
@lifftchi Elegant, yes, but it still uses batteries (which are recharged by the PV panel).

Carbon zinc batteries are ok for remote controls. Otherwise, save yourself the hassle and just throw them in the garbage before you use them.

@fordprefect @nostrom0 Not likely. These batteries will only work reliably in things with very low power draw (infrared remotes, simple LED flashlights, etc.) If your console controller has force feedback (vibration/rumble), these likely wouldn’t last long.
Need D’s. But not a hundred of them.
@lseeber Double D’s.

I need AAAs anyway and wouldn’t waste money on “heavy duty” cells.
