@werehatrack pre-coffee, I could not remember the criteria for tolerable detergents. good thing anti-perfume sentiment is catching on now or I’d have six boxes of unusable detergent sheets.
Probably not as bad as pods, but I highly suspect these will add plenty of microplastics to the environment compared to liquid or powder detergent. These are great for travel, but I’d pass on them for use at home.
@ciabelle they do contain PVAs, but that dissolves completely in the wash cycle. The vast majority of microplastics from laundry come from the clothes themselves (polyester, acrylic, nylon). Do with that information as you will.
@ciabelle@haydesigner I am sure that the vast majority of plastic pollution comes from clothes. Your comment got me searching for some solid information on polyvinyl alcohols. Your comment sent me down a rabbit hole, thanks.
The Cleaning Institute (.org) claims that “The grade of PVA used for laundry detergents dissolves completely and biodegrades within hours of wastewater treatment.”
Nature (.com) says “Even with decades of research, there is currently no definitive proof that PVA/PVOH is truly biodegradable”.
NIH says “Very little research exists that aims to monitor the biodegradability of PVA in the natural environment.”
We’ve switched back to using powder, in cardboard boxes. It seems to work very well & is very easy to use. I’m puzzled as to why I ever stopped using it.
It’s more expensive than normal priced Kirkland laundry detergent per NORMAL load at 11.4¢ per load. So I guess you’re paying extra to not use a plastic bottle… And have stinky perfume clothes.
@goldnectar Since you’ve used Kirkland, can you comment on how it compares to Tide no-scent, no dyes, bleach alternative laundry detergent for HE washing machines?
/image tide bleach alternative no dyes no scent unscented
For those of you wanting to eat these, note Amazon’s page for these says: “Statements regarding dietary supplements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or health condition.”
Damn, these sounded perfect for colonoscopy prep until I read that.
/showme cinematic illustration of a warm beach where sand & surf blend together, and a tiki bar with a sign reading rum=5&coke=3 hangs beside a list of snacks: [peanuts, chips] and a small chalkboard shows the words {“status”:“ok”} in a careful script.
According to EPA the sheets are PVA-polyvinyl alcohol and contain no plastic pollution of microplastics. They are $9.99 at amazon. 70 washloads are based on a small load. Who does small loads? I always wait for a full load for the front load. “Im in” as they say on shark tank. SIDDEAL has a cordless iron. I have 2 that were around $80. Each. I love mine. Works really well and at that price…well played. What next? A white sale?
In their laundry detergent tests, Consumer Reports didn’t like any laundry detergent sheets, but they really didn’t like these, giving them a score of 31. That’s lower than any liquid detergent tested except Great Values Natural.
@craigthom@mehvid1 I bought ‘Tide evo Free & Gentle Laundry Detergent Tiles, Fragrance-Free, 40 Medium Sized Loads, Easy to Use, Safe for All Machines and Water Conditions’ from Amazon (haven’t used one yet).
I paid $14 now $20.
@Eugene0567 “1/2 sheet for small loads”… are people cutting these in half? Mehhhbe. Anyway, I guess “up to ‘x’ loads” leaves a “sheet load” of wiggle room.
Bottom line, will these save money when compared with a comparable liquid laundry detergent?
Does the sheet desintegrate or does it have to be disposed of after the wash?
@werekong I was wondering the same about the sheet dissolving. I’m just casually curious; I wouldn’t use this product anyway. [EDIT] I watched video and about 10 seconds in they say the sheet dissolves quickly.
@accelerator@werekong There’s a reply above which notes that the NIH states that there’s not enough research to confirm that PVA/PVOA is actually biodegraded in the wastewater stream.
@werehatrack@werekong saw that, thanks. Regardless, I personally wouldn’t use this product. I think someone mentioned taking these with you on travel. That seems like a reasonable way to use this product.
I can see one possible use case for these. If you’re on a 10+ day cruise and want to pack flat a dozen of these in a gallon zip lock bag to do the laundry onboard, instead of packing powder or liquid detergent. Expensive, yeah, but you are on a cruise, so convenience might be worth it???
@seangt proclaimed: “this is stupid just use powder in a cardboard box. cheaper and probably less-energy-intensive to produce.”
I can think of two use case scenarios where one might want washer sheet soap.
First would be people having to schlep the laundry to a second location, such as a laundromat or a friend’s house. (If you’re going to mom’s house, just use her soap)
Second would be during travel. Soap sheets would be pretty easy to slip into a suitcase and, again, travel to where the washing machines are.
I am willing to take a gamble. LOVE laundry sheets, especially for when I travel. In for 2, just hoping the fragrance is not vomit inducing, I am weird with scents…but can always do the rest of the family’s laundry with them if I dislike it for me.
@cbilyak But then you have to smell it ON THEM!!
I’m just hyper averse to chemically scented laundry products. I bought 2 pairs of quite nice jeans off Poshmark, but they reeked of dryer sheets. I’ve washed them with Oxiclean, hung them out in the sun for 3 days, washed them with soap & borax, soaked them overnight in a vinegar rinse, and washed them again with soap & borax. I hung them to dry & they might finally be tolerable.
Arm & Hammer went way overboard with the scent; overpowering and only moderately pleasant. Had to take the box out of the house and into the garage due to obnoxiously strong scent [the entire house smelled of the stuff], and it overpowered the garage as well! Threw these sheets out.
Um, if you don’t like them - donate them to a local food shelf - they also provide basic necessities like toiletries and cleaning items, when they can.

Power Sheets? Is that some sort of porn reference?
@yakkoTDI Only if you’re putting on a gold medal Olympic performance!
This deal smells.
Got perfume? No sale.
@werehatrack Same here! I can’t stand synthetic perfumes (no really, I’m allergic).
@werehatrack pre-coffee, I could not remember the criteria for tolerable detergents. good thing anti-perfume sentiment is catching on now or I’d have six boxes of unusable detergent sheets.
I would buy this instantly if it were UNSCENTED.
Fragrance Free Failure.
Three kids in sports. This is a yes from me. I prefer fragrance free but I’ll live with it.
@sillyheathen you mean THEY’ll “live with it”?

420? 420? I’m confused…is this some sort of powerful sheet?
/giphy 420 loads

Write something nasty on the them then wash away your sins.

@goldnectar Thanks. All I needed to know.

@bigmeh FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY
@alacrity Huh? I thought they went IN the washer? This is such a confusing product.
I can say with absolute confidence:
these make really shitty margaritas
@alacrity
these make really sheety margaritas
Fixed it for you.
@algae1221 Bravo. Well done, really
These are probably on meh because they’re NOT fragrance free
That writeup slayed me.

I thought these were dryer sheets. Arm and Hammer, light weight. Now Sweat X. That’s for the real funk.

Heheheh… you said “loads”…
@Perfect_Timing

35 sheets a box, 3 sheets for good size load so that’s only about 16 ish loads a box.
96 Loads for the $24 bundle of 6 boxes
Not too bad of a Meh deal, full price I’d say it would be a novelty item to show off. just my opinion
MEH
@dahobbs9 2 sheets for a large load
In their laundry detergent tests, Consumer Reports didn’t like any laundry detergent sheets, but they really didn’t like these, giving them a score of 31. That’s lower than any liquid detergent tested except Great Values Natural.
@craigthom and isn’t Great Value the Walmart brand? So it’s inherently meh at best.
@mehvid1 It is. The quality of Great Value products varies by product.
There are a lot of liquid detergents they didn’t like that still rated better than these. Earth Breeze also got a 31.
In general, Tide varieties (the original synthetic laundry detergent) topped the ratings with scores from 76 to 84.
The Kirkland Free & Clear others have mentioned scored 68 (75 for the regular Kirkland).
@craigthom @mehvid1 I bought ‘Tide evo Free & Gentle Laundry Detergent Tiles, Fragrance-Free, 40 Medium Sized Loads, Easy to Use, Safe for All Machines and Water Conditions’ from Amazon (haven’t used one yet).

@craigthom kind of a Costco stan here, so those are good to know. Thx.
Holmes: We really need to wash our crappy clothes. Do we have any plastic-free detergent?
Watson: No sheet, Sherlock.
These are offered in fresh scent as well. Work well on stinky gym clothes.

210 sheets, 420 loads? Doesn’t make sense-but this is Meh!
@Eugene0567 “1/2 sheet for small loads”… are people cutting these in half? Mehhhbe. Anyway, I guess “up to ‘x’ loads” leaves a “sheet load” of wiggle room.
How do these taste compared to Tide pods?
Asking for a friend…
@Pufferfishy
Who’s careful folding you use them as wonton wrappers for your pods…
@chienfou
They are perforated for tearing apart. I’d have occasion use for the halves in small loads, but more likely as a booster for large loads.
But the scent is a deal breaker.
@rpstrong seriously WHY do we have to have toxic crapppp scents!?
Who Doesn’t LIKE a Fresh Breeze?
@JohnQ118 Everybody around after Taco Tuesday. They say my breezes are not that fresh.
@JohnQ118 @yakkoTDI is that why it’s called Ass Wednesday at the office?
Bottom line, will these save money when compared with a comparable liquid laundry detergent?

Sheets are garbage… These are at least cheap.
Also Arm & Hammer isn’t a great laundry detergent…

I’m confused !! 70 sheets X 6 boxes is 210 sheets ?? What math is this ?
Division. Specially by 2, as the claim is 1/2 a sheet is good for a small load.
