Authorities in our business will tell in no uncertain terms that Lorem Ipsum is that huge, huge no no to forswear forever. Not so fast, I’d say, there are some redeeming factors in favor.
You begin with a text, you sculpt information, you chisel away what’s not needed, you come to the point, make things clear, add value, you’re a content person, forswear forever.
Just fill up a page with draft copy about the client’s business and they will actually read it and comment on it. They will be drawn to it, fiercely. Do it the wrong way and draft copy can derail your design review.
@BGreider Those are 4-layer; these are supposedly 5-layer. Doesn’t account for all the price difference, but it’s notable- experts say 5-layer is better.
@hchavers, who is ‘we’? Is your significant other a physician, a nurse, or work in a nursing home? Just curious. I’m over 65 & have 2 pre-existing conditions & I still do not have mine yet, but I wants a Moderna shot anyway. I do wish there was one you only took once!
@hchavers My wife is the vaccine coordinator at her hospital. This means she might get a call in the middle of the night if the vaccine storage freezer malfunctions.
Her hospital will be using the Moderna vaccine, because vaccine rated freezers that can store the Pfizer vaccine are sold out or ungodly expensive. One of standard children’s vaccine has the same storage requirements as the Moderna vaccines, so some hospitals already have adequate vaccine rated freezers. If her hospital doesn’t get such a freezer before the vaccine is available, the vaccine will be stored at a sister hospital in another city. She is in daily meetings with 35 other people to work out the logistics for the hospital system.
She may be in charge of logistics for her hospital, but she rarely has patient contact. She may be among the last at her hospital to get vaccinated, unless there are sufficient doses to vaccinate all of the staff with the first shipment.
The vaccine isn’t very effective until sometime after the second dose, which is administered after 28 days.
If everything goes smoothly, she might have immunity no earlier than two months from now. The vaccine studies have only demonstrated protection against developing COVID-19 severe enough to have symptoms. Vaccinated people might still become asymptomatic but infected. This would mean they may be able to spread the disease.
I am not in a high risk group, so I won’t be eligible for the vaccine until it is generally distributed.
A friend of ours died from COVID-19. Don’t act like a testosterone poisoned snowflake, where a mask consistently. Keep wearing masks for at least the next six months.
@hamjudo@hchavers The Pfizer vaccine is 52% effective at the first shot at 7 days and becomes 95%+ effective with the second shot.
I’m not feeling sorry for you. Distribution is not instantaneous. However, you can thank the current admin for any vaccine for a Chinese launched bioweapon.
@who922 Yikes. I’m vaccinated (part of the Pfizer trial) and I’m still wearing a mask. It really isn’t that hard! Annoying? Sure. But you know what’s worse? 300,000 dead and counting.
If one wants masks that have better than 95% filtration (but they cost more than these here) then powecom masks fit that bill. They are on the above linked to list (and have been for months). Of course how tightly they fit matters as well.
The masks meh is selling likely would be, at a minimum, better than rectangular masks due to the more fitted shape thus it would gap less on your face. The % filtration is an open question since they have not submitted their masks to be tested.
@riotdemon@thumperchick@narfcake I made a typo in my link which needs corrected to bonafidemasks.com I would really appreciate it if someone could correct that for me. I missed my typos in that url. Thanks!
@bdb What I do know is that bonafide is one of the USA’s distributors for powecom masks (eg on the chinese website for the manufacturer of powecom masks they are listed as one of their USA distributor). The ones I got both times had the anti-fraud sticker that checked out on the chinese website. They are on the CDC list and each month they are listed as having better than N-95 filtration - at least since last May when I first found that CDC website (remember though that fitting of a mask also affects how a mask will protect you, not just the filtration).
The 2 times I have ordered from them I got the masks in about a week (although it might be slower right now due to mail service overload). My second order they accidentally gave me all headband rather than both ear loop and headband and they promptly sent me the missing masks. They told me not to return the extra headband ones so I sent them to the assisted living where my aunt and uncle died of covid in their room and to the covid unit of the assisted living where my mom was when she got covid (she lived).
I know Harley masks are N-95 NIOSH and are actually on the list as approved as NIOSH, I do not know anything about their relationship between that manufacturer and how they are actually getting their Harley masks. They seem pretty concerned about the fake powecom masks out there when theirs are genuine. My personal guess is that they don’t want to ruin their reputation of selling genuine masks by selling fake Harley masks. They have been selling masks well prior to the pandemic so are not a fly by night operation (their company sells things other than masks/health care PPP on a different website).
@mike808 probably almost 100%
Even if it was made of 100% recyclable materials, I would NOT put this in my recycle bin since after it’s used, it’s considered contaminated biological waste.
@bbf@mike808 so with that logic we should all be treating facial tissues and napkins as biological waste and burning them yet they are normally discarded as regular waste. Lets ask everyone to have a ‘red bag’ special trash for these. Do you have any idea how much MORE it costs to dispose of red bag waste?
@bbf@macromeh@Philosopherott
My point was that the world is being (and will continue to be) inundated with millions of these things - more than the empty plastic water bottles in the Great Pacific Garbage “Island”.
And there really hasn’t been any thought or substantive discussion about the waste stream mass permanent adoption of single-use (or few-use) items for everyone, every day for the forseeable future. Certainly not at the federal level or even state level.
Although I’m sure the arguments over “not in my back yard” will soon be upon us. Because everyone loves freedom as long as it is at the expense of someone or something else.
I doubt one penny of all those PPE manufacturers (and distributors!) is finding its way into even studying the problem of post-use waste, much less into escrow to deal with it when the inevitable “pay me now or pay me later” cost comes due. And when it does, they all just love the socialist (ahem - taxpayer funded) solutions to the messes they helped create.
@bbf@macromeh@mike808 If you really want something like that to be thought about in capitalist m’urica you need to add a VAT to fund a new agency that studies ecological/economical issues like this and make recommendations to congress about how to fix it. GOOD LUCK! We cant get them to fund there current advisors: Congressional Research Service (CRS), the Government Accountability Office (GAO), and formerly the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) never-mind listen to them
@bbf burnt fabric is probably a particular form of activated charcoal. Stuff can be reduced to charcoal without distorting the shape very much. The pore size and surface area of the starting fabric is chosen to produce a desired pore size and surface area in the charcoal.
You can make activated charcoal at home with a huge surface area by using the right kind of nearly nutritionally free bread. In this case, I am thinking Wonder Bread. It is a uniform low density carbohydrate foam. This is a fine use for Wonder Bread, as it isn’t good for eating, and it is particularly unsuitable for children.
@richrauch we all should be able to submit for refunds from China and it should include free health issuance of our choice for life, paid for by China.

Who was that masked man?!
@yakkoTDI I think it goes something like this:
[crowd noise…crowd noise]
“Say…who was that Masked Man? I wanted to thank him!”
“Why he was the Lone Ranger!”
[hoof beats]
“Hi-Yo! Silver! Awaaaaay…”
[hoof beats fade to William Tell Overture finale]

@duodec No, that’s Chinese made PPE to meh!
This company’s web site copy is interesting:
WTF?
from micooyoofficial.com
EDIT: That text shows up on a lot of web sites so I guess it some CMS placeholder text.
Hopefully this is not indicative of how much effort they put into their products…
@awk I like the idea of sculpting information. Its a politicians dream.

@BGreider Those are 4-layer; these are supposedly 5-layer. Doesn’t account for all the price difference, but it’s notable- experts say 5-layer is better.
@BGreider @Observer8834 But at this price point you can double up and still save…and get 8 layers instead of 5.
@BGreider @Observer8834 @tightwad Is this like razors? You know, three blades on a handle is better than one, and five is better than three?
WHO still needs mask. We have our vaccine.
@hchavers So how’s that working out for you?
@hchavers, who is ‘we’? Is your significant other a physician, a nurse, or work in a nursing home? Just curious. I’m over 65 & have 2 pre-existing conditions & I still do not have mine yet, but I wants a Moderna shot anyway. I do wish there was one you only took once!
@decoratedwarvet @hchavers There is one in the (USA) pipeline that is a one shot vaccination.
Take the masks and shove em up your keester…it’s Christmas, that’s the BEST you could come up with? Jesus, Joseph and Mary!!!
@k9mckaig, Moses wore a face mask after he came down from that mountain.

These masks have not been tested (they are not on the list of masks that have been tested which is where the link below goes) so who knows what one is getting with respect to filtration level.
https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/respirators/testing/NonNIOSHresults.html
@Kidsandliz Agreed. However, even a subpar KN95 is better than the flat pleated blue type.
@Observer8834 agreed
If I have to wear a mask one more day I may lose it!! I don’t wear the ones I’m given! I sure don’t want to buy any!!
@who922 I guess you are doing your part to make America great again.
@who922, it sounds like you ain’t wore a mask any days, so if you lose it then the cause will be due to some other reason, jsyk.
@who922 Yikes. I’m vaccinated (part of the Pfizer trial) and I’m still wearing a mask. It really isn’t that hard! Annoying? Sure. But you know what’s worse? 300,000 dead and counting.
@theglassrat How was the Pfizer vaccine? Don’t know any trial participants.
@katbyter Exactly as you’ve been reading in the news! Felt crummy for a day after both shots (a few months ago), but that was about it.
@katbyter @theglassrat that’s what my chum who took the moderna vaccine said.

@Kidsandliz Your cdc link seems broken
@Kidsandliz Did you mean to link to bonafidemasks.com ?
@bdb Yes. Missed my typo. Thanks.
@riotdemon @thumperchick @narfcake I made a typo in my link which needs corrected to bonafidemasks.com I would really appreciate it if someone could correct that for me. I missed my typos in that url. Thanks!
@narfcake @RiotDemon @Thumperchick and apparently the cdc one got cut off. If that could be fixed too I’d appreciate it.

@narfcake @RiotDemon @Thumperchick Thanks to whomever fixed my links. I appreciate it!
@Kidsandliz Do you know anything about the Harley masks, and/or whether the bonafide place is trustable to get me the actual product?
(Mostly that Bonafide is getting actual product, not being taken for a ride themselves.)
@bdb What I do know is that bonafide is one of the USA’s distributors for powecom masks (eg on the chinese website for the manufacturer of powecom masks they are listed as one of their USA distributor). eBay masks quality uncertain. Meh’s quality masks? What should you do?
@glarue Meh masks quality also uncertain. See my two posts (the ones with links) up higher.
OH MY GOD THEY PUT A CHIN GUARD ON GLEN!!! WAIT GLEN HAS A CHIN?!?
@shahnm He might even have a wattle.
I just wonder how much of this PPE ends up in the landfill. Because the world needs more plastics. Sigh.
@mike808 probably almost 100%

@bbf @mike808
and therefore, should, by all rights be red bagged and incinerated per regulations.
@bbf @mike808 so with that logic we should all be treating facial tissues and napkins as biological waste and burning them yet they are normally discarded as regular waste. Lets ask everyone to have a ‘red bag’ special trash for these. Do you have any idea how much MORE it costs to dispose of red bag waste?
@bbf @mike808 so is anything you put blood on so I hope you have a bio bag for band-aids, bloody tissues, and feminine hygiene products.
@bbf @mike808 @Philosopherott Ohhh… Anyone know where one could find a bio bag large enough for a medium-sized cauldron? (Asking for a friend.)
@bbf @macromeh @Philosopherott

Burnt fabric 27%
Wind cotton 28%
Who wouldn’t want a mask made of burnt fabric and wind cotton?
@bbf burnt fabric is probably a particular form of activated charcoal. Stuff can be reduced to charcoal without distorting the shape very much. The pore size and surface area of the starting fabric is chosen to produce a desired pore size and surface area in the charcoal.

@bbf @hamjudo And wind cotton is probably meltblown cotton. Both terms are likely just inaccurate though amusing translations.
KuoH
You’d thought that even Meh (company) would have passed on these, too.
I am an Amazon Prime member Doesn’t this mean I don’t have to pay shipping on MEH???
@rich_langer You’re thinking of Woot, which is owned by Amazon.
Meh offers membership, which is $4.99 per month (and you can cancel anytime) for free shipping at all the Mediocre/Mercatalyst sites.
https://meh.com/membership
@narfcake Thanks for the explanation - you nailed it. I confused MEH & WOOT -
Put the country of origin (e.g. Made in China) in the specs.
Masks made in China should be compatible with virii made in China, right?
@richrauch we all should be able to submit for refunds from China and it should include free health issuance of our choice for life, paid for by China.
these masks are the new power banks, aren’t they
Waiting for Zorro masks to go on sale. Or maybe the Lone Ranger. Or best of all, Batman.
@eeterrific
or maybe:
@chienfou the green lizard?
@eeterrific
@tinamarie1974 can tell you what it is I bet…
@chienfou @eeterrific a nice mud/clay mask
I like these masks. This my second box. I like how they hug my face and when I wear them with my reading glasses they don’t fog up my glasses.
Just got this. Looks like some someone stomped on the box a few times in transit. The masks look unaffected, but a little unsettling.
