DON’T! They kill the wrong bugs, and are ineffective against mosquitoes and other biting flies. Worse, you will be creating “contamination zones” in your own yard…
@jmbunkin Any bugs that don’t bug us, eat the bugs that do bug us, and/or serve as food for other animals that don’t bug us. Any contraption designed to continously and arbitrarily kill, kill, kill is an ecological disaster! Don’t make me sing The Circle Of Life!
@jmbunkin@jzagray the issue is they are not at all effective against the ones that hurt you. Because the “lure” (light) has been shown to not work on mosquitoes and other nasties. Cause you known they don’t care about light. Maybe heat cause de vant to suck yer blood. which leds def don’t do.
The propane mosquito traps can work sort of. Usually it’s heat with another lure. But they are much more expensive obviously and limited range and you need to deploy several to drop the population.
If you live in a relatively non wet area apply the usual wisdom. Get rid of standing water collection points that you can. Keep things mowed. Mosquito dunks may help in standing water you can’t get rid of. Small pond or just a perpetual wet area since the bacteria mess up the larva. Some deet ain’t gonna kill you.
@jzagray No Singing !
Did not know there is a shortage of bugs,good or bad. I’m thinking zappers don’t help much but “ecological disaster” ?
I’m moving on so feel free to belt out a tune.
@dam091@jmbunkin@jzagray I don’t think bats are very selective either but they will get some vs none. however cause I have 12 acres and a very small stagnant pond back in the woods with basically a channel of muck that runs to the river. Somehow used as a drain tile on the county maps. There are just bugs
@jmbunkin you had a bat store? Never heard of such a thing. Idk if I could get bats to fill such a box. I have seen one only once under a loose piece of siding. So they are here in theory. Might just turn into a wasp nest so… Meh.
@jmbunkin@jzagray@macromeh my kitties are not allowed out and actually all of them came from outside. They are fine with it. Were highly effective when a mouse got in the house ~once or twice a year when it gets cold. but not eviromental murder. Cause they can’t.
@jmbunkin@jzagray@Kyeh@macromeh well yes dogs would be a huge problem if left to roam free with no owner. That’s generally not allowed here though. We have a feral cat problem and no one really cares about a cat. A dog they assume it’s lost and will chase down/call animal control. And have tags to call the owner. An unowned dog will go to shelter asap. We don’t really let dogs roam.
Their basically shitty wolves when you remove the human and of course they will do damage.
We also have a shitty owner problem that people don’t spay/neuter their cats and just have a hands off thing with them and… You know if it’s a barn/farm cat maybe .
@gobigblue15
I don’t know, but my suspicion is that if it were printed on a tab sticking out just below the light itself, you’d need to light a match to read it.

It might be a bunch Mehsquitoes
Solar bug zapper. Didn’t we discuss the demerits of this idea a few weeks back?
@werehatrack Exactly! Not only are they not eco-friendly, because they kill the good bugs, but they vaporize the killed bugs into a nasty kind of germy aerosol -https://meh.com/forum/topics/2-pack-zapguard-solar-light-and-bug-zapper-lanterns#60fc61df63e60a001b91581e
How shocking!
@seraphimcaduto should that be “invisible.death”
These are not a bright idea.
meh…
these are useless on vampires.
@alacrity First thing I was going to ask. Sigh.
@alacrity but if you added a little wood to that tip and staked it just right…
If these kill just ONE ankle-biter skeeter here in SoCal, then it’ll be worth it.
plastic upsetting groundhog :
@cfg83 problem is they won’t. Nice placebo effect I guess
My set of solar lights now partially glow for an hour after a great 6 hour start. These must glow for what, 10 minutes?
What is the color/temp of these lights? Why does nobody pay attention to this? I’m bout to Karan out on dis bitch
DON’T! They kill the wrong bugs, and are ineffective against mosquitoes and other biting flies. Worse, you will be creating “contamination zones” in your own yard…
What “good bugs” do these kill ?
@jmbunkin Any bugs that don’t bug us, eat the bugs that do bug us, and/or serve as food for other animals that don’t bug us. Any contraption designed to continously and arbitrarily kill, kill, kill is an ecological disaster! Don’t make me sing The Circle Of Life!

@jmbunkin @jzagray @unksol or just get some BATS
@dam091 @jmbunkin @jzagray I don’t think bats are very selective either but they will get some vs none. however cause I have 12 acres and a very small stagnant pond back in the woods with basically a channel of muck that runs to the river. I had meant to build some bat habitat.
https://www.nwf.org/garden-for-wildlife/cover/build-a-bat-house
Lots of other crap I still need to do first and I don’t get around to it but I would still like to try that.
@dam091 @jzagray @unksol The local bat store closed due to their inability to hire help. Seems like no one wants to learn a new craft.
@jmbunkin @jzagray
Ban them! Ban them now!
@jmbunkin you had a bat store? Never heard of such a thing. Idk if I could get bats to fill such a box. I have seen one only once under a loose piece of siding. So they are here in theory. Might just turn into a wasp nest so… Meh.

It there are ferals about tnr or if you have an outside cat spay/neuter but if you try and ban my kitties… Just hands off my pussy
@jmbunkin That’s what I came to ask. I have more fireflies this year than ever before, and I certainly don’t want to kill them.
@jmbunkin @jzagray @macromeh @unksol
It’s not just cats
https://www.livescience.com/27330-dogs-disrupt-wildlife.html

Well, of course the worst is us - humans:

What Lumen is the output of each unit?
@gobigblue15
I don’t know, but my suspicion is that if it were printed on a tab sticking out just below the light itself, you’d need to light a match to read it.
@gobigblue15 @werehatrack or maybe an innocent firefly heading for doom…
How are these rated per feedback from current owners?
@gobigblue15 I mean it’s slightly shocking. A nice buzz but it’s no taser so…
(Jk doing have any)
Looking at the ratings for that “similar” one on Amazon, it’s pretty clear that “not a bright idea” is the relevant observation.
Thx! & no thx on these toys/not fuctional tools of light
Where is the On/Off Switch?? There is no Manual!!
OK try it this way>>>>Is there an on/off switch?? If there is where is it?? Huh??
@wisker3600 Looks like it’s here:
@Kyeh Thanks for the great advice!!! I did not know they came apart. I did get the heck shocked out of my hand LOL
@wisker3600 Oh no!
