@arfdawg@mcanavino Maybe because a nice warm chardonnay just doesn’t float my boat? And if they don’t work, do we have to re-write the basic laws (theories, really) of thermodynamics?
NYT 2012:
“When whiskey stones first showed up on store shelves five years ago, they seemed destined to be another fleeting oddity, perhaps an upscale version of the Pet Rock fad of 1975.”
Epicurious 2017:
“Do Whiskey Stones Work?
As it turns out, not nearly as well as plain old ice cubes. Because science.”
Gearpatrol 2022:
“Stop Buying Your Dad Whiskey Stones, They Suck”
@formfeed Useful or not, it seems like an odd choice to pair 4 whiskey glasses with 9 whiskey stones. 12 stones would seem like the ideal number, but if not, 8 would still divide evenly.
Are they predicting you’ll lose exactly one of the stones, or break exactly one of the glasses?
@craigthom You just gave me a business idea:
“Lunchbox bricks”.
Tired of cheap and ugly plastic freezer packs breaking in your kids lunchbox? Try our sustainable alternative, LunchboxBrix. Cut from natural uranium ore, LunchboxBrix are stylish and keep your kid’s lunchbox clean and germ free.
I have no interest in the whiskey stones but those glasses look worth it on their own. Anyone got any hands on experience to speak of weightiness/etc? The Amazon reviews are positive.
This isn’t the first time old Daily posts don’t go inactive. They do this to allow you to still empty your wallet if you’re inclined to do so. Also you’ll note that a lot of the deals they post here are just a few bucks different from what’s for sale on their other sites SideDeal and MorningSave. So you’re getting a $10 discount from the normal price on their other retail sites.
@Kidsandliz You dip these in water for a few minutes. Then put them in the freezer. When you’re ready to drink, grab the rocks from the freezer and use them to chill your whiskey. This allows for colder whiskey without having to add water to the high class hooch.
But this for the glasses. I had two sets of stones made with two different types of granite. They don’t chill anything. A complete waste of time and money. It’s for poseurs who want to look cool to their friends, but dont know squat.
@arfdawg@Chronicle Granite won’t be absorbing any water. It’s not particularly porous. If it (or soapstone) WERE porous, it would absorb the whiskey.
Some people like whiskey stones. They don’t chill anywhere near the way ice does, but they don’t dilute the whiskey either.
Yep. First of all these are made of stone, more importantly GRANITE, which has low porosity. So you can dump them in a bucket for a decade and they wont be picking up much water.
@PooltoyWolf Yup, got en email earlier today that blah blah overwhelming demand blah blah not enough stock blah blah your order was cancelled but hey, at least we are giving you your money back so it’s okay, right?
Oh, and here’s some sorry $5 coupon to make things right… Not
@jrapoport I also got an email about it, though mine simply said there was going to be a delay…let’s hope that’s all it is! This is the first gift I’ve bought for my father in years…

I should take a shot at this deal!
Not me buying my own deal at 11:01pm nothing to see here
@mandirose
well THAT’s a ringing endorsement!
On the rocks. I get it.
/giphy I don’t get it
@stinks Came here to express disappointment that there wasn’t an “on the rocks” pun in the writeup.
You can get slushed and stoned at the same time.
Cocktails are designed around dilution.
@mcanavino Right you are. On the other hand, the stones aren’t bad at chilling the first glass of wine while the bottle is still cooling.
@mcanavino @rpstrong They dont work and why you a re “chilling” wine is beyond me.
@arfdawg @mcanavino Maybe because a nice warm chardonnay just doesn’t float my boat? And if they don’t work, do we have to re-write the basic laws (theories, really) of thermodynamics?
@arfdawg @mcanavino @rpstrong I give you “Chardonnay cubes”. Just pour some leftover Chardonnay into an ice cube tray.
@arfdawg @formfeed @mcanavino Leftover wine? Not in this house.
I remember those.

“Stop Buying Your Dad Whiskey Stones, They Suck”
Whiskey Stones. Whiskey Stones. Whiskey Stones.
@formfeed They suck for drinking whiskey with but you can always make them into dice or put them in a tube sock.
@ciabelle @formfeed I mean, the description says “12 piece whiskey stone set…”
@humanamerican That includes the bag, box, and tongs.
@formfeed yeah ice doesn’t cool drinks just by being cold. Changing state from solid to liquid requires energy, and it gets the energy from the drink.
That’s why freezer packs work better than than bricks.

Maybe if they were double wall insulated?

So close to getting these, I’m just too lazy to hand wash them.

@Trinityscrew /giphy reverse-virtual-gentle-mallard
I canceled it.
Why can I still buy this?
@Trinityscrew Because they want your money.

@Chronicle Kinda makes the whole “deal a day site” spiel pointless.
What on earth do rocks have to do with drinking whiskey?

The stone simply are a gimmick.
Amateurs drink whiskey/bourbon/scotch from a glass with rocks. I drink from wood!
Finally, meh has something I want, SOLD OUT (Trencadis). Though the whiskey stones are useless.
Wow—Fugly glasses and silly whiskey stones.
What happened Meh—did you run out of Candy Corn?
It usually takes 2-3 drinks before I find my “whiskey stones”.

Anyone else’s order on these still processing? I just hope they have enough time to arrive for Father’s Day.
@PooltoyWolf they had enough time to get cancelled
@jrapoport Huh?
