Hmmm… Interesting. Have the problems been worked out in current models? One article I read said 3DR has all but admitted it’s out of the consumer market now.
@djslack 3DR is moving into Enterprise ventures and “de-emphasizing” their consumer market.
As far as problems with current models, they reworked their GPS shielding last year and personally, I haven’t had any troubles with mine. At the $800 I paid, it was a fair price. At less than half that, PLUS a second battery and rotors for free… I’d recommend it even for entry level fliers.
Sure, it doesn’t include the camera like a DJI P3, but for $379 it’s priced a bit less than half of a P3 Pro (and 1/3 the cost of a P4). Considering the software capabilities and the ease of flight… it’s a very solid value.
That’s a great deal! The rest of the solo stock was given to their hardware manufacturer to be sold to recover the cost of all the drones they ordered last xmas season that they could not sell. Very tempted… I was also looking at the new DJI Mavic…
@garyhgaryh The Mavic looks cool as heck to be sure. I own a Solo. I paid $800 with one battery.
@ruouttaurmind wow… I’m pulling up $399, didnyou apply a coupon? Very tempted. My focus had shifted to another new hobby (firearms) so my paycheck has been mostly spent there. I’ve never really been happy with the p1 and the flight time sucks. This… seems like a good option for me to jump back in… is there no solo 2nd gen?
@sportykev The $379 bundle price was a Daily Deal Thursday only.
No Solo II yet. 3DR is shifting focus to enterprise markets, using the Solo and their mapping software (developed in conjunction with Autodesk).
@sportykev BTW, word of warning: the firesticks, even more so than drones, are a deep, dark hole that will suck up your entire paycheck faster than you can say “Second Amendment”.
I built a 7.62x39 AR (16" M4 configuration) and gave it to me for my birthday on Sunday. What’s your latest indulgence?
@ruouttaurmind Super tempted on the Solo, but concerns are, if they are truly exited the consumer space, and there aren’t as many aftermarket parts as the Phantom, I don’t want to get stuck with a drone without community support!
In the past 6 months, I’ve purchased/built a M590A1, Mini14, 2 AR15s that fell into the ocean during a fishing trip, and the most recent acquisition, the Ruger Precision in 308. Yes, expensive. Lots of ammo too, whenever there’s a sale that never seems to be discounted enough. BTW I made all this up, I don’t have any firearms.
@sportykev 3DR hasn’t announced discontinuation of the Solo, simply shifting focus towards Enterprise sectors. Ag, geo mapping, site surveys, etc. They decided they just can’t compete with the Chinese, like Walkera for example, who were releasing new product every couple of months and gutting the price ceiling in the market. They also named DJI’s frequent price drops, and the unequal playing field (cheap Chinese labor, no US tariffs on Chinese goods, no US income tax on sales/profits). So they’re de-emphasizing the consumer sector and strengthing their pursuit of the deep-pocketed commercial and industrial markets, but continuing to use Solo as the basis.
3DR has received massive investments from Qualcomm, Autodesk and other giant US companies. It’s unlikely those investors will let 3DR wither away.
AR’s fell into the drink? Dang! How in the world did that happen?
Ammo prices… bah. I haven’t fired my 1911’s in years. And my .45LC’s in a decade. I’ve been shooting since I was a kid. When I was in high school my buddies and I used to go out after school and blast through a thousand rounds of Winchester Wildcat .22lr ammo half a dozen times a month. It was $5.99 for 500 rounds. Now you’re lucky to find a box of 50 for that price! I don’t expect anything to improve after Hillary takes office either.
@ruouttaurmind “we’re not coming for your guns!!”
@sportykev No, they’re sending the men in the black helicopters to do the dirty work! LOL!
I have registered Class 3 stuff and a FFL, so I’m already at the top of the list…
@ruouttaurmind I NEED AN FFL FRIEND. In NY, we have to ship ammo to FFL, and then pay said FFL a fee to receive shipment.
@sportykev I live in AZ. We’re all issued a gun upon birth and a Live Free Or Die tattoo on our 16th birthdays.
Seriously though, AZ is an extremely pro-2nd state. I don’t envy your NY restrictions.
@ruouttaurmind don’t get me started…
Yah, it’s showing $399 for me (now), too–and no spare anything. I really don’t need another flyer…having said that, I’m really tempted by the Mavic.
@fultonmartin The $379 bundle price was a Daily Deal Thursday only.
The Mavic is a cute little thing, innit.
@djmajickman, I neglected to mention in my OP, but Best Buy has the Solo rotors on sale for half price.
