3D printer design experts
3My husband wants me to make a box. I haven’t a clue how to do this. I’ve just done stuff from thingiverse so far.
It’s taller on one side (the short sides) than the other.
bottom dimensions (in inches) - 3.75 x 8.25
Tall side: 6 inches
Short side: 2.5 inches
He’ll be putting pieces of steel in it.
I’m looking at thingiverse for something I can modify. I’ve learned from you guys it’s not that hard to do.
But how would this be built from scratch? Any good tutorials on this?
Thanks in advance.

Tinkercad to build the model that you can then import into CURA or whatever slicing software you use.

Building models is a tedious process, you have to draw your shapes with the basic shapes you are given. Using the Solid and the Hole styles to make the end resulting shape.
@robroyjk75 Thank you!
You will likely need more design info than that. Are those the inside dimensions or outside? How thick will the walls and base be? How will the short and tall sides be connected?
Tinkercad is good for basic shapes. More complicated shapes need more complicated tools like freecad or fusion 360.
Designing objects to be easily or well printed is its own art.
@fibrs86 I’m still trying to figure out blending colors with ink on cardstock, designing 3D objects for printing is way above my pay level at this point.
@lisaviolet well, I just bought yesterday’s alcohol ink markers. Maybe I should be asking you for pointers.
@fibrs86 “It’s really hard!” she whined. “The videos all make it look so easy!” as she wiped her hand over her face, leaving streaks of festive berries distress oxide ink behind.
@lisaviolet I agree that Tinkercad would be the easiest for this. If you need some help, I can make one and upload it to Thingiverse. I would just need to know if the dimensions above are the size of the opening or the box itself, how thick you want the walls of the box, and if it slopes longways or short.
@lisaviolet
Here is one with the inner dimensions of 3.75” X 8.25”, walls are .125 inch thick, and a total height of 6” on one side sloped to 2.5” on the other.

Hope that’s what you needed.
@Ignorant Wow! Thank you so much!
I came into the office this morning to find this drawing on my desk with a note “can you print this out?”
The dimensions are fine.
I started the Tinkercad tutorial, I really need to learn how to do this. On my bucket list, for sure.
I really appreciate you taking the time to do this.
@Ignorant I did have to shorten the length a bit. Cura kept burping back at me a “won’t work” message, because it was a little outside of the print area. Brian was okay with a half inch less in length.
I just took this picture (sorry it’s so crappy, but the sun was in my eyes…) 15 hours, 72% finished.
My ink pad containers took 20 hours. I was making one a day.
@lisaviolet looks great!
@Ignorant You do good work.
@Ignorant @lisaviolet The length of time it takes to 3D print something reminds me of the first home scanners. not the hours it takes to 3d print, but several minutes to scan a single page. And now I can several documents per second at work. I can just imagine how much faster 3d printers are going to get.
The finished product. My husband is pretty happy with it.
In use.
@lisaviolet That’s in press-ive.
