I love these. I just wish they were thunderbolt compatible. I had to buy different magnetic tips to swap my docking station from one computer to the other. These work awesome for charging though.
@mikey@pakopako That mechanism is actually pretty sturdy. The copper connectors WILL oxidize, however, which WILL degrade the rate at which they charge (you can check this with any number of apps that measure your phones charging rate), until eventually it’s charging at half its potential rate (or less).
I bought some these on previously (Gen1’s). Bought some extra tips and now most of the house is setup with them. These look like the gen2’s (purple vs blue light) if they are, even better as the magnet is a bit stronger on them.
I like these but the connectors oxidize once the coating wears off (which it necessarily will because these rotate and rub against each other by design. I’ve measured charging rates after they’ve started to build up oxidization and they can get to the point where they’re barely charging above discharge rate, which sucks. But it’s a tradeoff for the convenience I guess.
I cannot imagine these actually charging at 100W using this type of connector—that’s simply bullshit and likely physically impossible. But it will charge at a rate that’s close to “fast charging” (i.e., somewhere between 2.1-3.0 amps), and over time it will drop from there until you get new tips.
@dvermilion@ShotgunX If the pictures are accurate. It appears that the actual contacts are magnets, except for the center one which is gold-plated. The magnets are nickel plated. I know that in the older charging cables which only needed two contacts, the magnetic ring provided one of them. Unfortunately, the magnet attracts particles that are abrasive, and the nickel plating just does not hold up very well to that. Plus, some of those particles may be big enough and conductive enough to short out across the gap. I had that happen with one of the older style, and the plug was hot enough to burn my fingers by the time I discovered it. The wall wart hadn’t failed, it apparently kept switching the power on and off to keep itself from burning out. But the cable end really got hot. That’s why I stopped using this kind of cable. My environment contains too many things that can interfere with it.

Have several of these, they’re awesome. Picked up some extra tips from Amazon and now damn near everything I own that takes USB power runs off these.
PANS! GLANDS! CRAYONS! AWESOME!

VAN MURALS! GROUND SQUIRRELS! SPIT CURLS! AWESOME!
@mikey how long have you used them for?
The little joint at the end that allows for 90-degree turning looks fragile to me.
@mikey @pakopako had mine for a few months and so far they’ve held up just fine, including being stepped on on hardwood.
@pakopako Ordered mine in December. Solid as a rock and I detach/reattach multiple times every day.

@dvermilion @mikey @pakopako how much were they?
“Sprayed with fart spray” comprises the best installment of the day so far.

The comments here sold me, I have so many electronics and this would make things easier in multiple vehicles and rooms.
This coroner is kind of slow … unless all the weapons were taken away and hidden or something.

@dvermilion Can’t you just clean the contacts with a copper cleaner of some sort?
